Representative Pedro “Pete” Marin (HD-96) will address the graduating class of Georgia Gwinnett College on May 9, 2024, ahead of their commencement ceremony. Marin, who has served as a state representative for 22 years, played a pivotal role in the creation of GGC and has been a staunch supporter of the college throughout his tenure. STORY 2:Gwinnett County's first wetland park will open in 2025

Gwinnett County is set to open its inaugural county-operated wetland park in unincorporated Duluth next year, called Beaver Ruin Wetland Park. Costing $14.8 million and spanning 86 acres, the park aims to naturally filter stormwater runoff before it reaches nearby waterways. Commissioner Kirkland Carden highlighted its benefits for District 1 residents' well-being. Once completed, the park will offer recreational activities while serving as a natural filtration system for runoff from a 4.5-square-mile area. Gwinnett County aims for platinum-level certification in environmental stewardship, with funding from various sources including sales tax funds and the Recreation Fund. The park will feature amenities like a wildlife observation tower, boardwalk, playground, picnic area, and educational exhibits. Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson sees the park as a catalyst for positive change and sustainability.



STORY 3:Governor signs tax cut legislation into law

Governor Brian Kemp signed HB 1015 into law, accelerating Georgia's largest state income tax cut in history. Sponsored by Rep. Lauren McDonald and co-sponsored by other legislators, it accelerates the reduction in income tax rates, with the rate for Tax Year 2024 lowered to 5.39%. This marks a significant cut from the previous rate of 5.75%. The Office of Planning and Budget estimates taxpayer savings of approximately $1.1 billion in 2024 and $3 billion over the next decade. Kemp also signed several other bills, including HB 1023, which lowers the corporate income tax rate, HB 581, enabling a constitutional amendment for property tax relief, HB 1021, increasing the state's income tax dependent exemption, and SB 496, expanding criteria for historic home certification and extending tax credits for rehabilitation and rural zone revitalization.

STORY 1:Gwinnett Police Asking For Help Locating Missing Teen From Buford

The Gwinnett County Police Department is seeking the public's assistance in finding Asata Amun, a 16-year-old girl from Buford who has been reported missing by her father. Asata is described as 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 115 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen at her home on Westoak Court in Buford, wearing a white shirt and black pants. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is urged to contact GCPD detectives at 770.513.5300 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 404.577.TIPS (8477) or online at www.stopcrimeATL.com. Informants may be eligible for a cash reward leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.

STORY 2:Man Wanted For Robbery Killed In Shootout With Gwinnett County Police

A man wanted for several robberies was killed in a confrontation with Gwinnett County Police officers on Jimmy Carter Blvd. An officer attempted a traffic stop on the suspect's red SUV in a Waffle House parking lot. The driver, wanted on outstanding warrants and suspected of robbery, initially stopped but then accelerated, shooting at the officer. Another officer in an unmarked car was fired upon as well. The pursuit continued, resulting in a collision between the suspect's vehicle and a patrol SUV. The suspect fired at the officer before being shot and killed. The officers provided aid, but the suspect died on scene. The GBI is investigating, and no injuries were reported among officers or bystanders.

STORY 3:Norcross man receives double life sentences for murdering Lawrenceville brothers

Walter Debron Hill, convicted of murdering brothers Darius Myles and Christopher Smith, received two life sentences without parole, plus 10 years. Security footage and cell phone data placed Hill near the scene. The victims were found shot in their home, with no signs of forced entry. Family members identified Hill as a possible suspect, noting his friendship with the victims. Hill initially denied involvement but was linked to the crime by shell casings found in Texas. He returned to Georgia and was arrested. Despite evidence, Hill showed no remorse. The Gwinnett County DA called the sentence justice for the tragic loss.

STORY 4:Fire Displaces 50 People At Norcross InTown Suites

A fire at the InTown Suites hotel in Norcross displaced 50 people on Wednesday afternoon. Firefighters responded to reports of flames on the bottom floor extending to nearby vegetation and the roof. Everyone safely evacuated, and crews brought the fire under control by 5:32 p.m. Utility services were disconnected, and there were no reported injuries. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

STORY 5:Rapper GloRilla arrested in Suwanee on DUI charge


Memphis rapper GloRilla, real name Gloria Hallelujah Woods, was arrested in Suwanee for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. Police pulled her over for making a U-turn on a red light and noticed signs of impairment. Woods admitted to drinking alcohol but refused to disclose how much. She showed signs of impairment during field sobriety tests and declined a breathalyzer test. Marijuana and an open alcohol container were found in her car. Woods was charged with DUI, failure to obey traffic control, and possessing an open alcohol container. She was booked and released on bond within three hours.

Police pulled her over for making a U-turn on a red light and noticed signs of impairment. Woods admitted to drinking alcohol but refused to disclose how much. She showed signs of impairment during field sobriety tests and declined a breathalyzer test. Marijuana and an open alcohol container were found in her car. Woods was charged with DUI, failure to obey traffic control, and possessing an open alcohol container. She was booked and released on bond within three hours.

Gwinnett County families can enjoy free fun and learn about children's health at the YMCA's Community Day festivals this weekend, part of Healthy Kids Day celebrations. Nineteen YMCA locations, including the J.M. Tull-Gwinnett Family YMCA and the Robert D. Fowler Family YMCA, will host events with games, obstacle courses, bounce houses, and educational activities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Publix Super Markets Charities, Delta Airlines, and Gas South are partnering with the YMCA for these events, promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles. Families can access YMCA facilities for free and learn more at ymcaatlanta.org/healthykidsday.

STORY 2:Family Promise Bed Race To Shine Spotlight On, Raise Funds For The Homeless In Gwinnett

Visitors to Lawrenceville Square on Saturday morning will witness a unique sight as themed beds race around the block, all part of Family Promise of Gwinnett's 13th Annual Bed Race. The event aims to raise funds and awareness for families experiencing homelessness in Gwinnett County. Executive Director Carol Love emphasized the importance of addressing this issue, citing HUD data showing a 12% increase in homelessness in 2023. With Georgia ranking 15th highest in the nation for homelessness, the event seeks to support Family Promise's programs and provide essential services for families in need. Teams from local businesses and organizations will compete in timed races, creating an energetic atmosphere of camaraderie and friendly competition. STORY 3:Tuition and fees to increase at Georgia’s public universities starting fall 2024

The Georgia Board of Regents approved a plan to increase tuition for public college and university students in the state. Most in-state students will see a 2.5% rise, while out-of-state and international students will face a 5% and 2% increase, respectively. Chancellor Sonny Perdue cited economic trends, including inflation, as reasons for the hike. For instance, at the University of Georgia, in-state tuition will go up to $5,017 per semester, while out-of-state students will pay $15,136. The increase, effective fall 2024, also affects online learners, who will see a 2.5% eTuition increase and new fees. The move comes amid a 6.4% budget increase for the university system approved by lawmakers.
