STORY 1:Gwinnett Students Exceed State On Milestones

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) students generally outperform their statewide peers on Georgia Milestones Assessments, excelling in 11 out of 13 areas. However, results still fall short of the ambitious goals set by the district’s Blueprint For The Future plan. Less than 50% of students in several grades, particularly in English/language arts and social studies, achieved proficient or distinguished scores. Notably, 8th-grade science and high school physical science results were significantly below state averages. GCPS is analyzing these results to improve strategies and outcomes. The full details will be presented to the school board in August, with math results expected in September.

STORY 2:Gwinnett Police Mourn Death Of Retired K-9 Elsa

Gwinnett County Police K-9 Elsa, who retired last fall after eight years of service, passed away last Thursday due to a spinal illness. Elsa, a Belgian Malinois, joined the department in 2016, thanks to a $12,000 donation for her training. During her career, she participated in 545 service calls, apprehended 51 suspects, and was involved in 87 narcotic apprehensions and 133 evidence recoveries. Her retirement came in October due to declining performance. Elsa was cared for by her final handler, Cpl. Austin Hylton, and will be remembered for her significant contributions to public safety.

STORY 3:More Gwinnett School Board Members Speak Out About AP African-American Studies

Gwinnett School Board Vice Chair Karen Watkins co-signed a letter from the Georgia Federation of Teachers demanding an explanation from Georgia Schools Superintendent Richard Woods for not recommending state funding for the AP African-American Studies course. This decision, which has sparked backlash including from Gov. Brian Kemp, means the course cannot be offered as an AP course in Gwinnett due to funding and GPA implications. The letter, also supported by local churches and advocacy groups, seeks a revamp of the curriculum to be more inclusive. Watkins and other Gwinnett board members argue that students should have access to such courses without bearing additional costs. The Georgia Federation of Teachers plans to push for legislation to address these educational inequities in the 2025 session.

In fiscal 2024, the Port of Brunswick saw significant growth, handling a record 876,000 units of Roll-on/Roll-off cargo, a 21% increase from the previous year. In contrast, the Port of Savannah experienced a 2.3% decline in containerized-cargo volume, managing 5.25 million twenty-foot equivalent units. Brunswick's growth is attributed to rising consumer demand, expanded trade, new car manufacturers, and cargo diversions from Baltimore. Despite Savannah's decline, the Georgia Ports Authority remains optimistic and continues to invest in infrastructure, including new facilities at both ports.

STORY 1:GCPS student named finalist in 2024 3M Young Scientist Challenge 

Sirish Subash, a rising freshman at Brookwood High School and former Crews Middle School student, has been named one of 10 finalists in the 2024 3M Young Scientist Challenge. This prestigious competition for grades 5-8 seeks innovative solutions to everyday problems. Sirish, recognized for his creativity and scientific dedication, previously won the Agricultural Research Service Award for Excellence at the Georgia Science & Engineering Fair for his AI-based pesticide detector, PestiSCAND. The grand prize winner, selected based on creativity, scientific knowledge, and communication, will be announced in October in St. Paul, Minnesota.

STORY 2: Seckinger Hosts Atlanta Falcons Training Camp

On July 13, Gwinnett County’s newest high school, Seckinger, hosted the Atlanta Falcons for a public practice, marking the team’s return to a local high school field after a seven-year hiatus. The event, part of the Falcons' training camp due to renovations at their headquarters, drew over 500 fans. Attendees enjoyed various activities and watched new quarterback Kirk Cousins and draft pick Michael Penix practice. The event also allowed Seckinger’s football team to observe up close. Falcons head coach Raheem Morris praised the school and its coach, emphasizing the importance of connecting with fans. The practice was a success, bolstered by favorable weather.

STORY 3:Buford’s Matthew Crabbe Wins USA Cycling National Title 

Buford sophomore Matthew Crabbe won his seventh national title at the USA Cycling Masters and Junior Road National Championships in Augusta over the weekend. He secured first place in the Junior Men 15-16 Criterium Division, part of an event where over 80 national titles were contested.

STORY 4:Taylor Heinicke Sees ‘Writing on the Wall’ in Falcons QB Room  

Buford native and current Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke is adapting to a new role despite uncertainty about his future. After a 2023 season as a backup, Heinicke faces competition this year with the Falcons' high-profile signings of Pro Bowl QB Kirk Cousins and draft pick Michael Penix Jr. Heinicke is focused on contributing positively by supporting both quarterbacks and maintaining his role as a valuable teammate. STORY 5:Korean War Veterans and Fallen Soldiers Honored at Ceremony in Duluth 

Sunny Park, who was a child in Korea during the war, recalled witnessing a U.S. fighter plane crash near him, bringing the conflict closer to home. On July 27, marking the 71st anniversary of the Korean War armistice, Park, now leading the American Korean Friendship Society, organized a ceremony at the 1818 Club in Duluth. The event honored Korean War veterans and soldiers who died, with tributes from South Korean officials, the Georgia National Guard, and local organizations. Keynote speaker Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr praised the veterans' sacrifices, while Korean War veterans reflected on their experiences and the importance of such commemorations.

STORY 6:Gwinnett County Public Schools makes Forbes’ ‘Best Employers for Women’ List  

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) has been recognized by Forbes as one of “America’s Best Employers for Women” for 2024, ranking 40th in education and 207th overall. This honor reflects GCPS's dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive workplace. Forbes, in partnership with Statista, surveyed over 150,000 women at large companies to determine the rankings. STORY 7:Lilburn Police Department To Host National Night Out Aug. 6   

The Lilburn Police Department will host its 2024 National Night Out on August 6 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Lilburn City Park, 76 Main St. This community event, part of a nationwide campaign to foster police-citizen partnerships, will feature a K-9 demonstration, helicopter fly-in, and displays of First Responder equipment. Attendees can enjoy food trucks, music, and interactive games, and meet local police officers and other law enforcement personnel. Sirish, recognized for his creativity and scientific dedication, previously won the Agricultural Research Service Award for Excellence at the Georgia Science &amp; Engineering Fair for his AI-based pesticide detector, PestiSCAND. The grand prize winner, selected based on creativity, scientific knowledge, and communication, will be announced in October in St. Paul, Minnesota.

With the 2024-2025 school year starting on August 5, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) has 20 teacher vacancies, a significant improvement from past years. GCPS Chief Human Resources Officer Cathy Hardin reported this is the lowest number of vacancies seen pre-school opening in years. The district, which had 71 vacancies in mid-July, has filled about 1,500 new teaching positions and hired 98% of its 2023-2024 student teachers. Additionally, all bus driver positions are filled, positioning GCPS as a leader in staffing compared to other districts.

STORY 3:Gwinnett Police Searching For Killer Of Lawrenceville Man Found Dead In His Truck

Gwinnett County police are seeking public help to identify a suspect in the murder of 40-year-old Guadalupe Garcia Rodriguez from Lawrenceville. Rodriguez was reported missing on July 1 by his wife, and his body was discovered in his truck on July 3. Police have released photos of a Hispanic male suspect in his 20s or 30s with a slim build, last seen walking on Bethesda Church Road near Hidden Dr. Anyone with information is urged to contact GCPD at 770-513-5300 or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477) for potential rewards.

STORY 4:Grayson grad-now in the NFL- reunites with surgeon at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta

Owen Pappoe, now a linebacker for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals, first faced significant injury challenges in high school when he tore his left hip labrum during a game in 2016. Despite initial fears and the need for hip surgery in early 2017, Pappoe made a swift recovery, thanks to his dedication and superior athletic conditioning. He later surprised his surgeon, Dr. Cliff Willimon, with a visit to thank him for his care. Pappoe also gave back to the community by visiting young patients at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, driven by his own family's experience with sickle cell disease. As he prepares for his second NFL season, Pappoe is focused on improving and contributing both on and off the field.

Gwinnett County has set a new record by earning 31 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Awards for implemented programs in 2023, exceeding last year's total of 22. This is the highest number of awards the county has achieved in more than 50 years. Among the honored programs are the Affordable Housing Development Fund, Gwinnett Entrepreneur Center, and the Veteran and Family Services Center. The county also received the Best in Category Award for the Harvest Gwinnett Community Garden Ambassador Program, which promotes community involvement and addresses food insecurity through gardening. Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson highlighted the county’s dedication to providing innovative and responsive services to its residents.

Findings show that exposure to this "pesticide cocktail" can surpass the cancer risks associated with smoking, especially in farming regions like the Midwest.
