One of Georgia's First Latino Legislators Is Retiring

Rep. Pedro 'Pete' Marin, one of the first Latino figures in the Georgia General Assembly, announces his retirement after a distinguished 22-year tenure. Marin, known for his dedication to legislative duties, decided it was time to step down, honoring a promise to his wife, Nereida.

Marin's retirement announcement was met with bipartisan praise, highlighting his leadership, advocacy for the Latino community, and his successful tenure which included numerous authored bills and two years as chairman of the Gwinnett legislative delegation.

His service began in 2002, marking a watershed moment for the state, leading to a significant increase in Latino voter registration. He also served as a mentor to emerging Latino leaders, encouraging them to seek public office.

As Marin concludes his political career, supporters celebrate his commitment to representing Gwinnett County with integrity, honesty, respect, and courage. Marin hopes his actions have demonstrated his profound commitment to the community.

The Jackson EMC Foundation awarded $107,795 in grants during its recent meeting, with $57,500 allocated to organizations serving Gwinnett County. Recipients include Hi-Hope Service Center for nursing and nutrition services, Heirborn Servants for transportation assistance for survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence, Vision to Learn for free vision services for K-12 students, NOA’s Ark for trauma counseling, and the Georgia Transplant Foundation for organ transplant support. These grants are funded by cooperative members through the Operation Round Up program, totaling over $20.4 million since 2005. Applications for grants are open to individuals and charitable organizations in the 10 counties served by Jackson EMC.

STORY 2:Lawrenceville Teen Earns Spot In Prestigious Dance Classes in NYC

Thirteen-year-old Zharria Musette from Lawrenceville will embark on a six-week intensive dance training in New York City this summer, securing spots at the prestigious Joffrey Ballet School and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre School of Dance after successful auditions. Despite initial nerves, Zharria, with only three years of consistent training, impressed judges and earned recognition at recent dance competitions. Specializing in ballet, modern, and jazz, she aspires to dance professionally, with dreams of studying at Juilliard or joining the Rockettes. Her mother, Tai’Sheree, applauds Zharria’s dedication and talent, foreseeing a bright future in dance for her daughter.

STORY 3:Fallen State Trooper Remembered During Georgia Gwinnett College Commencement

Jimmy Cenescar, a dedicated law enforcement officer and student at Georgia Gwinnett College, tragically lost his life in a pursuit while on duty. He had anticipated his graduation as a significant milestone, overshadowing even his completion of trooper school. However, Jimmy's dreams were cut short by his untimely death. In a poignant ceremony, his brother Joel accepted Jimmy's diploma on his behalf, amid tears of both pride and sorrow. Despite the somber occasion, Jimmy's family and loved ones chose to honor his memory with celebration, following his spirit of resilience and determination. Joel emphasized that Jimmy would have wanted them to commemorate his achievement joyously.

STORY 5:Water-hogging data centers flagged in latest ‘Dirty Dozen’ environmental watchdog report

The Port of Savannah, a major container terminal, has experienced increased shipping traffic since the deepening of the waterway in 2022. However, the Georgia Water Coalition's Dirty Dozen 2024 report highlights the unintended consequences of record economic development, such as the threat posed by new data centers to Georgia's rivers. These data centers strain the electric grid and require large amounts of water for cooling, impacting the environment. The report also raises concerns about water resources in the coastal region, exacerbated by the deepening of the Savannah Harbor, and warns of threats to surface and groundwater. Additionally, the report expresses ongoing concerns about the Okefenokee Swamp amid plans for a titanium mine nearby.

STORY 1:Alleged meth trafficker who led deputies on chase denied bond

Jonathan Medina, an alleged methamphetamine trafficker, was denied bond by the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office following his arrest for evading a traffic stop in Suwanee, which resulted in multiple vehicle collisions. After attempting to flee on foot, Medina was apprehended by K-9 deputies. He sustained injuries during the escape attempt and was hospitalized. Authorities found 430 grams of methamphetamine in his vehicle, leading to charges of methamphetamine trafficking, fleeing law enforcement, obstruction of officers, reckless driving, among other offenses. Medina remains in custody.

STORY 2:Gwinnett County working with state officials on road widenings

Gwinnett County is partnering with the Georgia Department of Transportation to progress road widening projects, focusing on Scenic Highway and Sugarloaf Parkway. The collaboration includes a $85,000 study for Scenic Highway, funded by the 2017 SPLOST fund, and a GDOT-overseen preliminary engineering on Sugarloaf Parkway, with the county contributing $30,000 towards the effort. These initiatives aim to address congestion and improve safety, featuring a comprehensive approach that includes feasibility studies, traffic assessments, and conceptual corridor improvements.

STORY 3: Annandale Village announces Melissa DaSilva as its Chief Programs Officer

Melissa DaSilva, a distinguished nurse and leader with a comprehensive background in behavioral health, disabilities, and nonprofit management, recently assumed the role of Chief Programs Officer at Annandale Village in April. Annandale Village stands out as a unique nonprofit in the southeast, offering a wide spectrum of care services for adults with diverse disabilities, from independent living to skilled nursing, with a focus on promoting independence and hope for the community. DaSilva is excited to bring her expertise to the organization, where she will oversee all programs at Annandale's campus, including residential programs, day programs, and health services, furthering the mission of the nonprofit.

STORY 1: Alleged meth trafficker who led deputies on chase denied bond
Jonathan Medina, an alleged methamphetamine trafficker, was denied bond by the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office following his arrest for evading a traffic stop in Suwanee, which resulted in multiple vehicle collisions. After attempting to flee on foot, Medina was apprehended by K-9 deputies. He sustained injuries during the escape attempt and was hospitalized. Authorities found 430 grams of methamphetamine in his vehicle, leading to charges of methamphetamine trafficking, fleeing law enforcement, obstruction of officers, reckless driving, among other offenses. Medina remains in custody.
STORY 2: Gwinnett County working with state officials on road widenings
Gwinnett County is partnering with the Georgia Department of Transportation to progress road widening projects, focusing on Scenic Highway and Sugarloaf Parkway. The collaboration includes a $85,000 study for Scenic Highway, funded by the 2017 SPLOST fund, and a GDOT-overseen preliminary engineering on Sugarloaf Parkway, with the county contributing $30,000 towards the effort. These initiatives aim to address congestion and improve safety, featuring a comprehensive approach that includes feasibility studies, traffic assessments, and conceptual corridor improvements.
STORY 3: Annandale Village announces Melissa DaSilva as its Chief Programs Officer
Melissa DaSilva, a distinguished nurse and leader with a comprehensive background in behavioral health, disabilities, and nonprofit management, recently assumed the role of Chief Programs Officer at Annandale Village in April. Annandale Village stands out as a unique nonprofit in the southeast, offering a wide spectrum of care services for adults with diverse disabilities, from independent living to skilled nursing, with a focus on promoting independence and hope for the community. DaSilva is excited to bring her expertise to the organization, where she will oversee all programs at Annandale's campus, including residential programs, day programs, and health services, furthering the mission of the nonprofit.

The Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office's Victim Witness Program earned the 2024 Georgia Crime Victim Service Collaborative and Innovative Project Award from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. Recognized during National Crime Victims' Rights Week, the program demonstrated an exceptional commitment to victim-centered care. Serving over 84,000 crime victims in 2023, the program organized various initiatives like the Homicide Support Group and a candlelight vigil. They also distributed resource guides and conducted a Community Conversations web series. Gwinnett's Victim Witness Program was honored as the Child Fatality Review Committee Metro County of the Year. Gwinnett District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson praised the team's dedication, ensuring victims receive the support they need throughout the legal process.

STORY 3:Venezuelan refugee finds her way to GGC to complete college dream

Laura Davis, a Venezuelan native, fled her country due to political turmoil and found refuge in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Forced to leave college just before completing her psychology degree, she persevered and enrolled at Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC), drawn by its affordability and proximity. Despite challenges, Davis thrived at GGC, particularly in the RISEUP research lab, which focuses on social equity. She found a supportive community that valued her aspirations and ethnic background. Now, as she graduates, Davis plans to pursue a Ph.D. in social psychology, aiming to contribute meaningfully to academia and society. She will speak at GGC's spring 2024 commencement, symbolizing resilience, and determination in the face of adversity.
