       Story 1: Gwinnett approves $17 billion transit expansion plan

Gwinnett County commissioners have approved a $17 billion Transit Development Plan, outlining a 12-year expansion of the county's transit system. The plan includes new local and rapid service routes, microtransit, shuttles to and from the airport, and extended service hours. Funding may come from a transportation sales tax or property taxes. Previous transit expansion plans failed in 2019 and 2020. A referendum for a transportation sales tax to fund the new plan may occur in November 2024. STORY 2: Gwinnett schools preparing for federal COVID recovery aid to end next summer

Gwinnett County Public Schools in Georgia have been receiving federal COVID-19 aid, but Superintendent Calvin Watts has warned that this funding will end next summer, resulting in potential job cuts. The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds, provided through the American Rescue Plan, have supported various school needs during the pandemic. The district has already received $379.29 million in ESSER funding, with a total approved budget of $506.19 million. District officials have been planning for the end of this funding, considering whether positions or initiatives will need to be cut, ensuring long-term sustainability beyond 2024, possibly through attrition and resource scaling.

STORY 3: Teen shot by Gwinnett Police at Norcross apartment complex

Gwinnett County police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Norcross involving a 16-year-old suspect. The incident began with a 911 call reporting an armed teenage son, possibly under the influence of drugs. When police arrived at the apartment complex, the teenager fired shots at an officer during a brief foot pursuit. The officer returned fire, injuring the teenager's leg. The teenager was found to have two firearms, one of which malfunctioned and was discarded. The officer was unharmed, and the teenager's injuries were not life-threatening. Criminal charges against the teenager are pending, and the suspect's identity has not been disclosed.

In a Class AAAAAAA top-10 showdown, Mill Creek secured a 30-20 victory over Parkview. Despite challenges, Mill Creek's Cam Robinson rushed for 186 yards and scored two touchdowns. Norcross tied their coach Keith Maloof with Cecil Flowe for most Gwinnett County wins in a historic 27-20 win against South Gwinnett. A.J. Watkins led Norcross with a 57-yard touchdown run. Wesleyan defeated Gilmer 50-28 in their Region 7-AAA opener, with quarterback Ben Brown contributing to all six touchdowns. Greater Atlanta Christian dominated Northview 57-14, improving to 5-0. Peachtree Ridge made history with a 6-0 start, beating Meadowcreek 34-12, led by quarterback Darnell Kelly's performance. Buford ended non-region play with a 30-3 win over Marietta, despite room for improvement.

STORY 5: Gwinnett Superior Court Judge Tamela Adkins is running for re-election

Gwinnett County Superior Court Judge Tamela Adkins has announced her bid for re-election, seeking a second term in office. She was first elected in 2020 in a nonpartisan race. Adkins emphasizes her dedication to the community and her judicial skills developed over the past three years. With a background in law since 1993, Adkins holds a biology bachelor's degree and a juris doctorate. She is also pursuing a master's degree in judicial studies. Her campaign for re-election will be part of the state's general primary election in May 2024, appearing on both Democratic and Republican ballots.

STORY 6: Arefeen Chowdhury kicks off campaign for Gwinnett tax commissioner

Arefeen Chowdhury has launched his campaign as a Republican candidate for Gwinnett County's tax commissioner. On the Democratic side, the current Tax Commissioner Denise Mitchell is running for re-election, facing competition from Phillip Bonton III. STORY 7: Gwinnett Police arrest Jonesboro man accused of killing Lawrenceville teen

Gwinnett County police have arrested Righteous Love Williams, a 21-year-old man from Jonesboro, in connection with the death of 19-year-old Lawrenceville resident Michael Maddox. Williams faces charges of felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during certain felonies. The motive for the crime is still being investigated. Maddox was shot on Kentshire Place in unincorporated Lawrenceville, and he was brought to Northside Hospital Gwinnett by witnesses before police were notified. The witnesses were later located, and Williams was arrested with assistance from law enforcement agencies. He is currently in custody at Gwinnett County jail.
