"That's the most concerning part, I called 000 and was on the call for over 10 minutes then waited 20 minutes and no one turned up. Is this an under resourcing issue?"
And we're inviting Miss World Australia Jasmine Stringer on to talk about a terrible thing that happened over the weekend just at Southport Park and it was trending in the news yesterday. Good morning Jasmine.
Hi, thank you guys.
For those that don't know the story, haven't seen it yet. What happened? Well, first of all, who are you? And then what happened?
I am the current Miss World Australia titleholder. And on Friday night I was hosting a catwalk class for our aspiring models and contestants in this world and they'd throw in from all around Queensland, some girls from Adelaide, and I got a phone call as I was packing up the studio from one of the girls saying there was an altercation out the front. So packed up, rushed out there and one of our young models had actually been assaulted by a complete stranger who ran up and hit her in the head from behind and then grabbed her by the hair. Wow.
And was this man youthful or was he older?
Or it was actually a woman?
Oh that's why this is so unexpected.
Yeah, well okay, so what and so what.
Was wrong with the woman? Was there a beef between the person she was assaulting or was it random.
It was a completely random attack. The girls were just walking out the front of Southward Park shopping center. It just called them all heaves there like it's wasn't late at night. They were waiting to get that's right, and it was completely random. She was hurling random, violent, abusive words at the girls and only attacked the young model, And it was very strange behavior. So I walked out and I just said, everybody, get to your car's. Girls are fleeing into the car park hiding behind vehicle. This lady was just randomly attacking anyone she could get her hands on in our group. She then set her fights on me, and I tried to walk away ignoring it, and I ended up having to turn around and defend myself. So she came up and straight for the face. She tried to punch me. I had fended her off with my forearms, but I realized in that moment, I am not made for the streets.
Well you're not a lot of don't worry.
I saw you on the Today Show. You need to stay out of the ring and protect your beautiful face. What we noticed when we saw you talking about it. You rang the police and nobody came to help.
Well, that's the most concerning part of the whole situation. I got into the car, piled people into my car and called Triple zero and I was on the call for over twelve minutes, and the whole situation lasted over twenty minutes and nobody sat up to help. And we're talking a CBD area. And I just wonder if this is a police under resourcing issue or if our calls just aren't being taken that seriously. I was on the phone to the dispatcher and not one moment in that phone call did you say police are on the way. And when I said to him, this is escalating. People are getting hurt, women and children are being assaulted. Where are they And he's really dismissed me, and he said, you need to be patient. There's only once be there. They can go. They're coming.
We're hearing this over and over, unfortunately, Jasmine. There's some stuff going on at James Street at Burly at them and women are putting in calls to the police saying that they're feeling threatened and no one's coming. We must be very underresourced at the moment, and that might be the true heart of this story, and that's it.
I have so much respect for our police and the work that they do to put themselves out there and protect and serve our community, and they need to be provided with the resource and funding to be able to address the many calls that, unfortunately they're probably getting every single night.
What about the young girl that was accosted before you came out, Is she okay? Because she it sounded like she was a little bit younger.
Yeah, she was only twenty three and the girl she assaulted after me was only fourteen. Oh, dear, So they are okay. The twenty three year old had traveled here for the class and the Miss World Final from Adelaide by herself. I've spoken to her this morning and she just said she was really excited for her weekend on the Gold Coast and she went for a walk the next morning and she was so hyper vigilant and just worried and looking over her shoulder and just not it's not the beauty full city that we promote. And I know that the Gold Coast is better than this, and I wish that we could have given her a different experience.
I we agree Well, Thank you so much for your time, and stay safe and anything more fun coming up for you representing Australia.
I'm about to find out where my international final will be, so fingers crossed. It's somewhere really exciting it always is, and I'll be heading over to compete against over one hundred and thirty other countries at Miss Well.
Oh well, let us know how you go. Obviously it'll be in the news anyway, but we'd love to catch up with you again.
Thanks Gailie, Thanks Emily, Data really appreciate it.
