Trackside is all about stories from across the Great Western Railway network and today we’re hopping off at Exmouth in Devon. 

We went to youth clubs along the network to find out about the lives of young people across the south of England. 

Exmouth railway station is the terminus of the line from Exeter St Davids.

It opened in 1861, connecting the City of Exeter and the port town of Exmouth.

That line is called the Avocet Line, named after the pied avocet bird.

Starting a new school is a big deal, and it isn’t only grown-ups who should be asking the questions. We went to Alleyn’s Regent’s Park and Alleyn’s Hampstead and asked pupils one that really matters: what was your first day actually like?

They told us about feeling nervous, not wanting to let go of Dad and the kind teachers who helped them settle in. We found out what happens next, heard how one pupil made a few friends on day one and now counts loads of people as “basically all besties”, and asked whether anyone is still scared now.

Do they let you be yourself and show your culture, or do you just stick to the manual? Are the teachers fun, and do they put their all into it? What happens if somebody is sad? The pupils explain why a good school isn’t only about how it looks, suggest one very searching question for the science teachers about the periodic table, and remind us of the practical stuff grown-ups forget, like what’s for lunch on a Friday.
