“No police officer has ever been [told] anything about the trust she left for their benefit to reduce their rent.”

In fact, the police officers were specifically excluded from any discussions over the past eight years about the trust set up for their benefit, Indeglia said.

Complicating the situation: The Connollys’ property was sold in 2008 to cover Violette’s medical expenses. In 2012 the proceeds were used to help buy two and a half acres on High Street with an 1,863-square-foot duplex built in 1957, across the street from the Block Island School.

The town rezoned the High Street land in April, and last month poured a foundation in back of the duplex for a new 1,600-square-foot, $600,000 modular home. The structure is being built off-island and will be made available to the town manager to rent when it is assembled later this fall.
