Father's Day for the First Gentleman

View descriptionShare

Working largely from home, he cooks, gardens, and offers support for his wife.

It’s around 6 p.m. on a recent Wednesday and Andy Moffit’s wife, the governor of Rhode Island, is still at work, leaving him on father duty.

At the moment, that involves kneeling in the yard of the family’s East Side home in jeans and T-shirt planting tomatoes with his son, Tommy. His and Gov. Gina Raimondo’s daughter, Ceci, 15, is at ballet.

As he digs, Moffit explains he’s passing on a tradition. His parents had a big garden in Michigan, where he grew up and went to college.

He holds up his hand to simulate the mitten-shaped state and point out his hometown, which brings a look from Tommy that seems to say, “Not this again.”

Apparently, it’s not the first time Moffit has used his hand as a Michigan map. It’s one of those things dads do, and 12-year-olds roll their eyes at.

Moffit is often asked what it’s like to be the spouse of a female governor – one of nine in America – but this being Father’s Day, I was curious about the First Gentleman’s “First Dad” side.
