This is the first opportunity for Anita and I to work together. Anita, how are you today?
Well, I had Saint John's minus six and a half, so I'm not doing great right now. I've already explained to my three dogs and two cats that you know, they're not going to be eating grain free you know, food for the next for the next week. I always tell people. I always tell people when you gamble, gamble responsibly where your cats and dogs can still eat you know, uh, grain free and live along life. Obviously, obviously I don't follow my advice.
And you know I'm always a Mark Marvel. Look, I've been obviously around the sports scene forever. The best man of my wedding was a bookie.
I love that.
Oh he was and he was he was an independent operator back in the day.
You're you're speaking my love language.
And it was because of him. And actually it's it's funny how this all works. I don't want to again bore people with my old, old stories, but my gambling history really ended abruptly in nineteen eighty one. I was the year I graduated college. NCAA tournament right Thursday, and I'm getting all these recommendations. Tournament was smaller, wasn't even sixty fourteen's back in those days. So you know, I'm sitting there and I've got guys telling me, you know, this is the best play, best play. So I bet six.
Games the first day, you know, no harm. I lose all six.
And I'm like, how did that happen? I mean, the odds are the same of me winning all six as lose all six. It's a flip of the coin. So the next day, day two, I bet on five games and I'm gonna make some of this money back. Lost all five. I lost the equivalent of the time a three months rent. I had crawled back to my father, who was not happy, and that pretty much squashed. Outside an occasional Super Bowl bet or something like that, I needa that that was it. For me, and I don't know if that's good or bad. I feel envious for people that are totally engaged in this.
I know you certainly are with obviously great success.
Although yeah, there's gonna be days like today when Saint John's shoo's like five percent like they did against Arkansas today.
Yeah, it's unbelievable. Both these teams shooting under thirty percent from downtown, which which we have not seen obviously this season. So a very uncharacteristic game for both Saint John's and Arkansas. Even though Arkansas ended up winning, it was close down of course, to the wire. But nonetheless, yeah, you know, again I tell people like I think it's really important, and you know I am in this gambling space. I take it very seriously in regard to I do believe that people listen to my gambling advice, uh and they spend their hard earned dollars on the suggestions that I make. And just to be full transparency, I have not done well this this college football season because I typically I like to ride the dogs, and and we are not finding the dogs having any success. In fact, the favorites, especially double digit favorites Steve, have won a lot like like unheard of percentage so far this season. And I was listening to the Doug Gottlieb promo for his show, and and really like he hit the nail on the head. NIL deals, the transfer portal has changed the landscape of just college sports in general, not just in the in in college basketball, but in the NFL as well. But I think what we are seeing this year is, you know, the young hot thing that's only going to play college basketball for one year is not the shiny new toy anymore. It is it is the veteran guys that are staying in college basketball because they're making a ton of money with the NIL deals and the transfer portals. So now the men majors that gave us so much excitement in so much parody right in college basketball. It's just it's fallen by the wayside and it's not happening anymore.
Well this was, I mean. I have literally been filling out brackets since the field was expanded to sixty four schools back in nineteen eighty five, the year Villanova upset Georgetown in the championship game, and I have filled out a bracket. I never do multiple brackets. I'm not a believer in that you know the idea, Well, I have three different brackets. No, I have one bracket. Maybe I've entered that bracket into two different competitions, but I only do a single bracket every single year.
Once I filled out the bracket, that's my bracket.
And somehow, some way on Thursday, I did something that I had never done before, and I won a perfect sixteen to zero and which is and it's documented because it's on our Fox Sports Radio competition.
So I mean, it wasn't like, oh, let me see that bracket.
Well, it's actually been posted since Tuesday, it's so it's up there, and I actually pulled it off. But I didn't have a lot of upsets. You know, I'm just sitting there doing the brackets. It's funny because in the first round first, you know, first two days, my record was twenty nine to three.
Wow.
And two of my losses because I do this the teams that win the playing games, because you know my UCLA Bruins, you know, one from the first four to the final four. You know, back in the day, VCU did the same thing when Chaka Smart was so I always picked those teams to win their first game. So I had North Carolina and Xavier coming out of the first four wins and winning in the first round. They both lost. That That was two of my three losses. The only air of the loss I had was Mississippi State. Now I had Saint John's, okay, so but I think almost everybody had Saint John's except apparently Martin over here, who had Arkansas going into the Sweet sixteen. So are a good job?
Well do you approof do you proof Steve get proof I needed?
They actually posted it. It's posted. Yeah, so he's he's got that there. I'm gonna give that one to you. But I don't think it's gonna hurt me all that much because I think most people thought Saint John's.
I mean, here's the thing.
It's not gonna hurt folks if they've got Texas Tech advancing to face Florida in the Elite eight. So no, it won't be such a big blow. But there are a number of people who had Saint John's facing Florida and there and you know, listen, I know the majority of brackets out there have Florida winning the whole damn thing. So but they're for those that who were calling the upset majority of them were Saint John's more so than Texas Tech. Yeah, so that that could sting a little bit more than most.
Yeah, I mean, the Patinos story is an amazing story. First of all, I just love watching Caliperi and Patino. And by the way, I say this to people all the time, I know that you followed college follow college basketball based on one thing, how you pronounced coach Cal's name. It's not Calipari, It's Caliperi.
Let's just make this infinitely Claire.
And how do I know that because I've interviewed him several times and I've asked him flat out.
He really doesn't care.
But if he goes, if you're going to actually pronounce my name, it's Calipari, It's not Calipari. It's not like Calamari Calipari, it's Caliperi. And so like our own Aaron Taurus, who's gone all to work with coach cal always calls him Caliperi. But I was. I was at the Meadowlands of nineteen ninety six of the Final Four when caliperi'st UMass team with Marcus Camby faced off against Patino's Kentucky team that would go on to win the national championship was at the Metal Lands. Last time that the Final four was held in an NBA arena, Anita. And here we are twenty nine years later and these two coaches still going at a two Hall of famers. I'm happy for coach Cal obviously disappointed for Rick Patino has made a miraculous comeback from all the scandal that obviously cost him a national championship at Louisville. But just to see those legends on the court coaching against each other, for me as a college basketball junkie, that gets me excited.
Yeah, absolutely, you know, It's just it's interesting. I think there might be a change here in regard to you know, that first round and again, you did exceptionally well. I did not. I took a lot of upsets like and again, full transparency, I had high Point upsetting Purdue, right.
And by the way, you weren't the only one. There was a lot of buzz about high Point in that game. And the Purdue with the lost to Saint Peter's a couple of years ago. Obviously they had the one sixteen loss. So yeah, Purdue, even though they got to the championship game last year, A lot of people are thinking they're going to go back to.
Their normal I know, I really really, I think the sexy pick, the sexy upset was UCSD, m HM over Michigan. I had them as well. I had Yale over Texas A and m who right now is giving Michigan a run for their money as we speak. Yes, so had I really I came in with I had VCU over BYU. I came in with a number of upsets that I anticipated happening that did not transpire for me. So now you know, I think the second round, I think this is going to be interesting. I think there's going to be a turn of the tide, and I think we are going to see some upsets happening here. Like I do have Texas A and m OVER over Michigan.
Well, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on. Okay, So what we're going to do, Anita, because later on I'm going to use Anita's expertise in this. Well there you know, but like you say, it's been, it's been we're.
Hours for Mese teams.
Okay, expertise. Well, here's the deal. So the first rounds over, so forget you, forget your individual bracket all right now that you're like, oh, it's going to be one of those years coming up later in the show, and he is going to run down picks four witch schools. You know, later games tonight, obviously the games tomorrow are the best place. And think about it is Nina's not just going to I've seen anias works.
He's not going to just say yeah, I pick them. No, no, no, She'll give.
You a little there's a reason why, there's there's a reason to this, Okay, So we'll have that a little bit later on. I gotta also tell you a little bit later on, Anita, I was at the u c l A women's basketball game last night against Southern You my Bruins are number one in the country going to the tournament. No one's picking them. They're all picking yukon a USC or you know, South Carolina and no one's going with UC. But I wanted to share the experience being at that game last night. And you know where we are right now in terms of the women's tournament post Caitlin Clarks. We'll have that a little bit later on, but coming out on the other side, we're gonna get into NFL football. We got a lot to talk about. By the way, make sure to check out Fox Sports Radio's YouTube channel. A ton of great videos for many of our Fox Sports Radio shows. I guess over under how many times you're gonna mention how great you did in the first round.
I say, there is no limit to how many times are you going to talk about this? And now, I promise you, God.
Bless you, I would do this. Hey, listen, dude, I would do this. I would do the same thing. I would do the same thing. And by the way, by the way, just to mention in regard to your read, like, I have a lot of friends now who are like raising chickens so that they can cultivate their own eggs, Like it's a thing.
Well, I mean believe.
It was part of your read And I was like, Oh that's straight. And then I'm like, wait, no, that's not strange. Like I have at least three or four friends. Well, I have like a kid, like like you know, a coop, right, is that what's called?
Yeah? I have a twenty six year old son, my younger son living at home, who eats five egg breakfasts every morning.
Well, now, eggs are so damn expensive, Steve it. Actually it actually would be to raise some chickens so you can harvest your own eggs. I'm just throwing it out there.
Well, I appreciate that, Anita. Now I will like to uh, well switch gears for a moment here, because we still have a lot of NFL news to get to. And Johnny is right now. He is simply the best of the best. He is our fell inside here at Fox Sports Radio, the great Adam Kaplan is joining us once again. I don't know about your egg intake, Adam, these.
Days, I'm a vegan, my man.
Okay, then you don't have to worry about that. But there are still teams trying to figure out the quarterback situation before we get to you know, Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, how surprised were you with this Jameis Winston situation with the Giants.
Well, look, they are waiting on the Rogers situation, although they know that the odds are against him getting them. The Steelers won him badly, and we had his meeting with the Steelers yesterday. So look, here's the thing, guys. They only had Tommy DeVito on her contract, the only team they only had prior to yesterday one quarterback on the roster. They had to sign somebody. Jamis will make the roster. You'll compete for a role. No, I mean they had it at a quarterback. So no, I'm not surprised, although I know there was I was told last night there was another team involved. It was not the Browns, by the way. But bottom line is Jamis's you check him off.
Guys.
There are so few quarterbacks available now in veteran free agency. It's Rogers, it's Russell Wilson, it's Carson wet It's got some interest out there. Joe Flacco, who my understanding is the Browns have some interest in bringing him back. And it's pretty much. And then you got you know, Drew lock Case Kingum, so the list is dwindling.
Adam, it's been a minute high mid Yeah, how are you. I'm great, good to hear your.
Voice, Aneda, and I go way, I'm taking twenty years.
Hey hey, now, yeah, that's right.
There's not enough botox in the world.
Dude.
All right, let's talk about Aaron Rodgers, right because I find this interesting. Right he wanted reports where he wanted to go to Minnesota Vikings. They kicked that can felt that they were going to move forward with JJ McCarthy. Maybe they bring Ryan Tannehill to be somewhat of a mentor. But you know, the the big reason why Aaron Rodgers came to the Jets was because, you know, it was it was an offensive system that they brought an offensive coordinator that knew the system like, and it was his system and it was what he was familiar with and he didn't have to learn a new system. Whether he goes to the Pittsburgh Stealers with Arthur Smith, whether he goes to the Giants with Brian Dabele, those are two, you know, teams that I don't feel are going to like change their offensive philosophy for Aaron Rogers right now.
No they're not.
I mean no, no, they're not. First of all, he's forty one and a half years old. He could not move last season. He had two injuries Hampshire extrain MCL's brain. He just is you wonder physically how he's doing.
I mean he ended the season.
I was told healthy, but you're worry about that as quarterbacks get in the forties that just don't move as well.
Yeah, Arthur Smith is a run first guy.
I mean that that's you know, what he wants, and he wants decisive quarterbacks. You know, as I reported about six weeks ago, Smith led the coaches and wanting to bench Russell Wilson, but they were told they couldn't do it. So it is funny though, guys that Russell Wilson I'm told to still on their list, believe it or not.
It's a long shot.
Because they want Rogers, but the Steelers are in need of not eliminated him from their list. And then you know, you look at the Giants and Brian Dable. Yeah, he runs a different scheme. He runs a combination of schemes. But I'll say this about the Giants. I'm not saying they're making the playoffs if they get the quarterback position right, but they're really good at.
The receiver position.
I know they really like THEO Johnson was a fourth rounder over the last couple of years out of Penn State, who could run. They've addressed their offensive line. It's not great, but they're they're left tackle. Andrew Thomas continues to get hurt. They need to keep him on the field. If they get competent quarterback play, you could certainly make the case for them to be the eight or nine win team.
No more than that, but certainly a big jump.
All right, let me I need an answer on this one. Is JJ McCarthy the quarterback of the Vikings or not? I mean, are there?
Let me explain this.
So, I mean you're going to bring in somebody else, a veteran quarterback. I mean when is this J. J. McCarthy era supposed to begin in Minnesota?
So Steve, what they've done here, Here's what's happened behind the scenes. Here's the real story. So they talked to Darnold's people, They let him know kind of where they're at that they wanted to back, but they could not commit to them totally past one season, so that that that went south.
They have interested in Aaron Rodgers, but they want to wait because JJ.
McCarthy again has not played football since Week one of the regular the preseason last year, but it got hurt against the Raiders.
So though they know where his rehab.
Is at, they want to hedge their bed a little bit just for this season and that that that is they're interested Rogers because they want someone in case McCarthy is not ready. They want another answer. But no, McCarthy's cleaner of their guy. There, there's no question about it. And you know it's a shame behind the scenes. I'm going to say the last two weeks before he suffered the meniscus injury, he made a major jump like they were really really happy with his mechanics, which, by the way, we're not good at Michigan. You got to give you got to give their coaching staff credit. Obviously the head coach coach coaches the quarterbacks and calls the plays Kevin O'Connell. But the bottom line is, no, they have their guy, There's no question about that, Steve. But they don't they can't. They're not going to know about where he's at totally until he gets on the field. Hence the hedge betting with Aaron Rodgers and at least initially having interest in bringing Darnold back.
So Adam, you know, waiting for the dominoes to fall right with Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Joe Flacco, I'm really curious to get your thoughts on Kirk Cousins and what's going on in Atlanta right Look, I mean, are you are you really going to pay that much money to a guy who's going to be like riding the pine and holding a clipboard? Like what happens? How does that all play out?
I always tell people when the situations, look at this, when a team seems to be bluff, let's see where he's at in September. Because the smart thing to do is what we've seen with other teams. The need over the years is wait to see if a quarterback gets hurt. Like not that they're a little bit similar. The contract situation is different. When the Vikings lost Teddy Bridgewater, the Eagles at tremendous leverage with Sam Bradford. Okay, they they got what they wanted. They wanted a first round pick. They told Rix Bilman what it's going to take. Then she haderal manager of the Vikings, and the Vikings knew that they could be really good with good quarterback play, and Bradford did play well, but it was hugging up right against the season. Eagles had leverage, So it would be smart for the Falcons and Terry Fana, their general manager. They owe him thirty seven million dollars no matter what happens. Okay, they're not cutting him. They're going to keep him on the roster till they till someone really shows that they want him. This idea that they won't trade him is complete nonsense. Of course they trade him. There's no urgency in March. Now, here's the one thing with Kirk Cousins. He did not look right last season. I understanding of that game over five hundred yards against the Bucks coming off that achilles, he just didn't look right.
Two people told me he would know. So I'm not.
Another one a guy thirty seven years old. Where's heft physically? This is the state of the quarterback position. All these older quarterbacks, they're going to have value becauses at some point down the line, we'll have value to a team that really is dying for a quarterback closer the season.
All right, final question, because I asked this as a final question last week, do you believe by this time next week, Aaron Rodgers will have a new home. No, because last week you thought yes, now you're saying no.
Well no, No, he visited, he had the finally had the meeting, which I was told was going to happen. But what we've heard is that they that he's going to be a little bit more patient next time this time around. See, what I find fascinating is that he needs more time. What could he need more time for? Exactly whether he's into it or not. And I like what Cam Hayward said, Steve like, if you want to be here, make a decision than you look.
If you're not all in, then you're not only we don't want you. I I get it. I get it.
I talked to the Jets numerous times about him last season, and that's a that's another story.
By the way, one of these days.
We'll have to do a segment justph rodgers situation with the Jets last season.
Yes, it's very complicated, but very interesting.
All right, Well, Adam, as always tremendous stuff. We'll check in with you again next week.
All right, guys, hopefully we have more on Aaron Rodgers escapades. Maybe some other team will jump in and I'm just kidding.
Yeah, alright, don't get a centro on that one.
Adam Kaplin joining us, everybody right there? Yeah, I need. I'm gonna bring that up a little bit later on in the show about the whole Aaron Rodgers situation. But first let's find out what is trending. I know, I'm crowing about my sixteen and oh but but but that's nothing compared to Martin taking.
Markets are excited to see.
They're like, finally, Anita, You're you're talking to the guy. But Martin's the guy because he did what nobody did. He had Arkansas coach cal getting the Razorbacks into the Sweet sixteen. I mean, is this such so shocking?
Yes?
Is that I think Arkansas did not look great. There's a reason why they had.
Kansas advancing over Arkansas.
Yeah.
Really, it was more of a bet against Hunter Dickinson because he started at Michigan. I'm gonnaed I'm in Michigan, alum, and I watched Hunter Dickins's first few.
Years in college basketball, so that's that's he's not a team. He became an All American in Kansas.
Yeah, you know, and they sitting at home in mid March, just like me watching watching the tournament.
Well, no, I I obviously picked Arkansas. I don't know if you know this. I was sixteen or no, but yes, uh but yeah. As far as beating Saint John's, no way, no chance. No, Who's who's on Who's on your heels? Steve, who's second? Uh, there's like I have like a three game lead over five people among the host.
But I'm just saying, you know, start out sixteen. Hopefully this isn't like a Pittsburgh's Dealers situation.
They will be I started to have a complete col eight and two and then no, you know that's going to happen to me. That's why I'm calling attention to my sixteen and oher on day one. Yeah, I get the strategy.
At the half, HEXA A and M has a thirty nine to thirty five lead over Michigan. It's in the South region, Drake and Texas Tech going out of Texas Tech with a twenty two to twenty lead. Seven thirty left in the first uh sorry, seventh fifty ish left in the first round. There, I'm first half there.
Sorry.
Second round in the West, Arkansas beat Saint John's seventy five to sixty six. Arkansas advanced to the Sweet sixteen. John Kyle Party's sixteenth appearance in the Sweet sixteen, his first with the Razorbacks. Fifth seed to Perdue beat twelve seed McNee State seventy six to sixty two. Boy the Makers advance to the Sweet sixteen. We'll play the winner of eighteen Gonzaga and one seat Houston produced six Sweet sixteen appearance in the last eight tournaments. In the women's tournament, two seed ucon beat at Arkansas State by sixty nine points one O three to thirty four, and two seed USC beat greens You Don't see Greensboro seventy one to twenty five. Juju Watkins roller ankle did not finish the game injury not believed to be serious.
Oklahoma, North Carolina.
State, at Alabama, Iowa, and West Virginia all advanced in the women's first round to the second round. Savon Edmunds of Syracuse dot Com Colorado and Syracuse have saw permission a whole joint practices next month, culminating in the scrimmage. Anita, I got a question for you. If you don't know the answer, I don't mean to put you on this spot. Uh uh, but in the nervous no, no, no, okay, but in these big I know you lean. Like on the gambling side of things, I know your big better when you see these sixty nine point margin of victory or was it seventy forty nine point margin of victory and these two seed fifteen matchups on the women's side of things, is their value embedting those big favorites, because it's like, who's hanging a line of sixty nine or forty nine or.
Yeah, not me.
Just I was just curious if if you knew if I just I mean, I just feel like you gotta be.
I mean, listen, like when when a line gets the double digits, let alone minus twelve minus thirteen, I'm like, nope.
Yeah, I can't fathom I walk I walk away. So I just can't even fathom.
See you.
In college football, I mean, we see huge spreads, you know, and you're like, okay, because the problem with those spreads are you'll get a team blowing out somebody and then it's the back door cover because they exactly they let up and then all of a sudden, you know what looked like money in the bank at halftime and you walk away a loser. That's yep, that's you play.
You play that prevent defense. You're sitting your your big time starters in the fourth quarter, and and then you got to worry about that back door cover. I just like, there's just not enough hours in the day for me to lose sleep for that.
Uh well, wait to cause her to lose sleep. Martin, thank you very much for that. We appreciate that. Uh, thank you. We'll check in with you a little bit later on. Keep an eye on the scoreboard again his Wolverines losing good halftime to Texas A and M thirty nine to thirty five. Obviously you go back with Adam as well, and you know we're talking about this whole.
Let not state how many years.
Okay, I see, I can.
There's no way. By the way, the reason I feel like it's interesting our early connection on the show. So you're in Jersey, right, I.
Mean, I live in Hoboken, New Jersey, and I know it's it's not it is not as sexy as it it's really sexy to live here. It doesn't sound like it's sexy to live here so much. It is a very sexy place to live here.
So my original loose Cannon partner was the legendary Chet forty of Monday Night Football fame. Jet and I we were the original loose Cannons together back in the early nineties. And he's from Hack and Sack, oh geez, which I know is literally right down the road from you and Hoboken.
It's about it's about, yes, it's it's probably about thirty five forty minutes from me.
So there you go.
Some good some good golf, some nice golf.
I'm used to the jersey and sack. Yeah, very much. So well, I wanted to get your thoughts on Aaron Rodgers. I mean, you know, again the idea that because we heard the Steelers are already talking to Jalen Millroe, you know, are they going to draft mill Roe as a quarterback of the future. They had a quarterback of the future. Of course he's not. Of course he's not. But I mean maybe it was their way of saying, look, if you're not gonna make up your mind, we may go in a different direction. But is Aaron Rodgers, in your opinion, still worth the weight?
I don't believe so. I just you know, we're it's a sad state of affairs, is Adam pointed out right? I mean, you've got the Giants, the Steelers, you know, the Vikings. They want to run, they want to move forward with JJ McCarthy. Listen, I'm I love what JJ McCarthy did at Michigan. Okay, big shout out to to Blue Okay, But you know, how does that equate to the NFL? I don't know, right, Like, he never really had to put a team on his shoulder pads and win a game. You know, they had a solid defense. You know, Harball is committed to running the football, so there's a big question mark there, you know, I just I really, I just think that there's you know, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, the Giants, the Viking. Like, I just think it's a sad state of affairs across the board with a number of teams that are at this point in the game, we're just a week, right, or week away from April where teams like to get What happens is teams like to go out and they like to to make sure that they check the box on all their positions so that they don't go into the draft needy, right, Steve, That's what they do, exact right, They don't want to go in because when you go into a war room of an NFL team, you have a few different boards. There's one board that they list all the players and they ranked them regardless of want, need, desire, or position. And then they have another board that they rank players based on their needs and and then of course, well I guess then two boards, right, more than three, less than three. So you you want you want to be able to draft off your board with the best player available as opposed to all right, well, we're really in need this position. So you know, you and and the quarterbacks, with all due respect to cam Ward and shar Sanders and Milrow and you.
Know, don't forget Jackson Dart.
Jackson Dark coming out of Ole Miss, with all due respect to I don't not one of these guys, by the way, is worthy of being drafted in the first round, does it? Like three of them, four of them more than likely will be okay, But like talent wise, not one of them are ready for the NFL.
Yeah, And here's the thing, and everything you're saying is on the mark, you know, Like you say, all thirty two teams they have their draft boards. I'd love to see draft boards after the draft, like because a lot of times like you really had him there when another team met, you know. But here, here's how you really complicate a mess, Like you say, if you don't address a certain need before the draft, a deed you have, and then all of a sudden you panic and now you trade up chasing a need in the draft. Where again, it's always who you draft, it's where you draft draft. And so if you're forced to in a panic situation, like we get this guy and we're still not sure if he is the guy, but we we really can't take that chance. And all of a sudden, you're giving away future draft capital or draft capital in that draft to move up a spot or two to get a guy that had you addressed the situation prior to the draft, you wouldn't have put yourself in that situation.
And that's when you really get yourself in trouble, you know.
But just going back to your original question regard to like, is Aaron Rodgers worth all of it? I'm here again. I live in Hoboken, New Jersey. I cover the Giants, I cover the Jets more more than the average bear. And no, he's not. He's just like, like, there's always something, there's always something outside of the x's and o's off the field, he's you know, he's he's that chick you eight, who's really hot. But like, is high maintenance? Hre Steve, he's high maintenance.
Well, I mean, think about this. You have a self serving documentary called Enigma, and the point was, I watched this thing and I'm like, you are anything but an enigma in your mind. You're an enigma. You're an easy read, a very easy read, completely self absorbed. You know, sort of like me with my sixteen and Z in the first round. Uh, but I understand. I mean, this is, this is the whole thing. Try to label yourself some kind of enigma, like I'm an outside of the box guy. No, you're not. You're the furthest thing from that. You're as transparent as it gets a self serving player in a team sport period exclamation point. And you don't have the skill set you had even three or four years ago. So no, I'm with you one hundred percent. I am not going to basically put my organization in the pause button by bringing in Aaron Rodgers for a year.
Makes no sense, so real quick, because I know we're up against it. I always this is. This is the visualization that I typically give my listeners, and that is think of the scales of justice, right, And my grandmother had one, and I found it to be fascinating when I was a child, and I wish I had one. Now maybe I need to go to an antique score antique store to buy one. But think of the scales of justice, right, and on one side, you've got Aaron Rodgers with all the weight of all the the the minutia, right that he brings off the football field, and on the opposite side, put what he brings to the table now this day and age in regard to his quarterback skill and ability and what outweighs the other. To me, it's it's it's it's it's all the bs right that takes place off the football field, as opposed to what he's going to provide for you as a starting quarterback in the NFL. It wasn't that way three four five years ago, right, three four five years ago, Steve, we'd be sitting here saying, what are you kidding? Yeah, you gotta sign Aaron Rodgers, who cares. Let him do whatever he wants to do. Let him do the Pat Patton McAfee show five days a week. It doesn't matter. Like he's amazing, Well we're that's not the case anymore. And that how That's how it is with a number of players, and a lot of times I think they have this false view of themselves, and I think Aaron Rodgers still has that where like, oh, well, I'm still gonna do the Pat McAfee show, and I'm gonna continue to you know, crawl in this hole, uh in in darkness and not attend OTAs for so many weeks. Well, no, because you're your your play in in in what you're you're presenting or what you're you're you're bringing to the equation isn't what it used to be. So no, we're not gonna accept all this other stuff on the opposite side of the scales of justice.
Yeah, and I got news for these gms around the league. Russell Wilson's cut from the same cloth. Stay away from these two guys. Let them go into retirement, do something else with their lives. Do not trip over yourselves to sign either Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson. All right, On the other side, the state of the women's basketball game minus Caitlin Clark at the collegiate level, is it in good shape? Is it gonna fall back or is it gonna move forward? We're gonna break it down. This is Fox Sports Saturday.
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Steve Harbin, Anita Marks here Fox Sports Saturday. We're coming live from the tire Raq dot Com studios. So, last time I at the UCLA Women's NC Tournament game on their home court at poly Pavilion, and their longtime coach Corey Close said After the game, she was asked about the crowd at the game, Anita, and she's like, well, I'm hoping that we have the even a bigger crowd coming up on Sunday. They'll play Richmond tomorrow. You could almost sense a little bit of disappointment. I mean, UCLA is the number one ranked team in the country. Across town at usc they are a number one seed and also playing at home. LA's a different type of market when it comes to sports like this, But I guess one way to gauge the strength of women's basketball. Remember last year, the women's championship game between South Carolina and Iowa with Caitlin Clark had way more viewers than the men's championship game between Yukon and Purdue. But Anita, just from a gambling standpoint, how much buzz? How much interest have you felt this year in women's collegiate basketball minus Caitlin Clark?
Yeah, not much. And listen, you hit the nail on the head right nineteen million viewers. But and not to take anything away from Caitlin Clark, amazing and obviously changed the landscape not just of college women's college basketball but the w NBA this season really excited to see what this next season brings with her and these women. But also it was the rivalry right between her and Angel Reese right kind of reminded me. And again, I know we're talking age here, which okay, whatever of you know, Magic and Larry Bird. Sure a little bit right, like didn't you feel that a little bit like wait.
It's oh, you need a foid. Look at Angel Reese was brilliant. You know, obviously she's a very talented basketball player in her own right, but sort of attaching herself to Caitlin Clark is genius. And look at the opportunities she has had in promoting herself and commercials and everything else because of that connection. Look, rivalries are the root of all sports the way I look at it. You know, Anita, when when you think back to Magic Bird and I watched that championship game between Indiana State and Michigan State, and then you know, for them to end up with the Lakers and Celtics, it was like it was all scripted. It couldn't have been It couldn't have worked out more perfect for the NBA. But you're right, I mean that's what we need now. Something can could develop in this tournament. You know two years ago, that's exactly what happened. They developed between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese and then had the carryover Effectsancy we're both back the next year. I'm rooty. I have followed collegiate sports being a UCLA guy, because UCLA women won a national championship. Wasn't the NCAA, it was the aie W back in nineteen seventy eight, with my dear friend Annie Myers leading the way. So I you know, I've rooted for them to make progress, and I just I just hold my breath to see how much progress has been made now that Caitlin Clark is no longer in the mix.
Yeah, I know we're up against it. I do have an interesting story for you. Just how significant Caitlin clar Clark was her championship year.
All Right, we'll hold it holding on the other side. Okay, oh yeah, okay, because I don't I don't you.
It's an interesting story, puts things in perspective.
All Right, we'll get that story on the other side. Plus, don't forget, Anita's gonna help us break down the rest of these games this weekend. Who ends up in the sweet sixteen. This is Fox Sports Saturday.
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.

What the hell's going on in Michigan right now?
Killing me?
What is this?
I mean, they're down six right now to.
Uh, losing to Texas A and M, which, by the way, I had earlier today. Just yi, yeah, I mean listen, Michigan turnover prome two hundred I'm sorry, three hundred and twenty ninth in the country in turnover percentage, and A and M just great with ball pressure defense, also top offensive rebounding team in the country, and so they could counter Michigan's bigs. So I did have Texas A and M. I laid the two and a half today just step.
Wayioll well, very good. Well, I'm glad we're going to get to all this. But before we do all that, well, we got to hear this Caitlyn Clark story. You're gonna share with us, Anita, Yeah.
So very interesting. Right, So Caitlin Clark when she went up against South Carolina for the championship, right last year? Was it last year?
Ye?
Last year?
Yeah, yeah, last year. So planned this like huge watch party in the city. So went into New York City, went to a local you know what I called a watering hole, right, sports bar in New York City. There was like, I don't know ten fifteen of us watched the game. There ate a ton of food, think a lot of adult beverage. Game was over. Uber price surge. Uber price surge after the game was over. So for me to get an Uber home from New York City was ninety five dollars. For me to get an Uber home from New York City after the Iowa South Carolina came was ninety five dollars. So Uber And again I'm just I'm sharing this story, just marinating this for a second, the significance of so many people in New York City were out watching the women's game that when as soon as the game was over and everyone needed to get home, Uber had a price surge, so people were paying like insane amounts of money just to get home stack.
All right, So, Nina, I'm curious because you're an athlete and we've had a lot of I remember when Candice Parker came out of Tennessee and I'm thinking to myself, look if if this woman can't really put the star on the WNBA, who can. I mean, she had the game, she had the looks. I mean, she had everything. She has everything didn't move the needle. And I'm always curious, because there's no exact science to this why certain athletes move the needle when others don't. We all remember the brief insanity with the New York Knicks. In fact, I was in New York. I think I was covering Stanley Cup final. I talked to my son, I go, look, I'm in the NBA store here in Manhattan. You want to do? You wanna mellow Jersey or a insanity Jersey goes dead? Insanity's over, get me Melow. But I'm just curious from your standpoint because obviously we've been talking about Caitlin Clark for a couple of years now, and there doesn't seem to be any slow down, and people wanting to see her play.
I don't know how long that's gonna last, but it's still going.
Ultimately, you've had enough time to sort of analyze the situation Nita. Why her?
I think she's she's somebody who can do it all, right, Like she's a difference maker. And not to take anything away from Candice or any other you know, great college players and great NBA players, but you know, she checks all the boxes in my opinion, right, like can shoot from downtown, you know, insane in regard to assists. Just not only is she phenomenal, but she makes everybody else around her phenomenal. So fun to watch, uh, infectious. Gotta love her personality, Gotta love the the way she plays, Gotta love the way that she carries herself. There's just so many things about her that you can relate to and want to aspire to be. And so you know, and and and also let's go one step furtherest to you. The fact that like she didn't go to Yukon, right, right, she didn't go to she didn't go to South Carolina, she didn't go to Notre Dame. She went to a you know, a hometown team that was good, never really great. And and made them great. You know that's my and I know it's a whole nother story, but like that's one of my biggest knocks on Lebron, Like always chasing, you know, the team that's going to build the best talent around him, right, going to Miami to b with Dwayne Wade, going to Cleveland to be with Kyrie Irving, going going going right, like she was like, I'm my own I'm my own temple, and and I'm what stirs the drink, and i am wherever I am, no matter what is around me. I'm going to make that team great. And I think there's very few athletes out there who can do that.
Well, She's got whatever it is. I mean it, it has very right right, she has it it. I mean the factor that a Tiger had, that a Jordan have. There's very very few athletes where you actually have evidence that they literally move the needle dramatically when they are participating. So again, we'll see how this all plays out this year's tournament. Look, Juju Wakins, I get to see her obviously here in LA A phenomenal player. You know you've got you know, the unanimous All Americans this year. Paige Becker's obviously coming back from that devastating injury, and all of a sudden she's back and play that at that high level at Yukon.
By the way, Gino Rim, you know, you know the thing about Geno.
Rim is here you have a man in a sport where predominantly women are coaches, and he has put up a record unlike any coach that we've ever seen in NCAA basketball history, men or women, and I include my beloved John Wooden in that. Look at RIM's record, it is absolutely insane. If they were to win another championship this year, would just take it to the next level. What are you, an area An rim A fan.
You know, it's interesting, I've I've asked a number of you know, professional w NBA players who played at Tennessee, played at Yukon, played at the big schools. I think there's something about Gino sitting in your living room asking you to come play at Yukon. There is there is a gravity to that that I think it's really hard to say no to, you know, and and and not to take any thing away from him in regard to being one of the best women's college coaches in the history of the sport unbelievable, but also I think just the the success that the program has had.
But does being a man make a difference for him in the women's basketball world, because when you talk about the other winning his coaches in you know, collegiate women's basketball history, most of them are women. Does he have an advantage? I don't know. I mean, you just talked about his presence in a living room. I'm just curious about that.
I don't.
I don't And again, this is what is this is what has been shared with me, is that you know he there are certain people out there, like I've been in certain rooms with like pat Riley for example. Sure, right, Like like pat Riley is one of those guys, Like he walks in a room. Your back might be to the door, but when pat Riley walks into a room, you know he's walked into a room. Oh yeah, right, he's got this or he's got this vibe, he's got this energy. I've heard this and I've never met Gino, but I've heard the same with Gino. And so he's in your living room. He's asking you to come to Yukon with the most successful women's college basketball teams in the history of the sport, and you know, you go there, you're gonna be riding the pine probably for the first two years of your collegiate career. But when it's time for you to start, not only are you gonna start, you're gonna be on national television more probably than any other collegiate female athlete. And on top of that, chances are you're gonna be competing for the national championship. So I think all that combined, I think it's hard to say.
No to him.
Yeah, it's amazing record that he has, and he's had his best opportunity this year. Maybe, I mean they won today by sixty nine, and come on, I mean, it's just absolutely I think it would, you know, one of those one sixteen matchups. So you're really trying to tell everybody you made us a two seed? Really, really, you made us a two seed. We're gonna remind you how good we are. Although, well, Aaron and I at least for one day, I look pretty good out there at my brackets.
Oh so the segment is about your bracket?
Okay, So no, I just want to know.
Anina has been asking me throughout the show, how many times are you going to bring that up?
Well, I'm going to bring it up at least one more time with Aaron.
I mean, come on, now, how later are.
You guys on to five? Yes, we got Anita give me an over under. I think it's at least three and a half. You got about forty one minute I started.
I started the show with a five and I said over and we've surpassed that about you know, twenty minutes ago.
Yeah.
Thanks, it was like fouls in the Arkansas Saint John's game. You hit it over before the first time out.
I know it's okay, But you know, Anita brought up the point Aaron, that we haven't seen a lot of upsets early on in this tournament. Are you surprised by that?
I'm not, you know, Steve, you know me, I'm not a super like advanced analytics guy. But you know, the analytical people will tell you that there's some metrics that that seem to indicate that the top of this sport, the teams specifically, are actually probably better than they were five, six, seven years ago. And I think it's a direct reflection of transfer portal in the NIL and really going hand in hand, because you know, even if you want to if you're starting at a small school, even if you want to stay there, at some point the money gets so good that you have no choice but to transfer up. I mean, why are there no mid major? You know, Darlings Well, I don't know. It's because I own as best player two years ago. Walter Clayton is now the best player at Florida. Uh Morehead State had this center that they plucked out of obscurity in Florida is named and I Brook. He has two great years at Morehead State and now he's at Auburn, And so you know, listen, I don't think this means that we'll never see a two seed or a three seed lose in the first round. But I just think that the top of this sport, you're just able to reload rosters so much differently now than you were even two three years ago that I'm not totally surprised that we saw you know, opening weekend or and opening two days where I believe it was the first time ever no One, two, three, or four seeds off. Not really surprising again, just because again I feel like the talent has kind of risen to the top of the sport.
Yeah, those veteran players now that don't want to lead because the NIL deals and the ability for the transfer portal and to play right away, let's let's talk about the conferences, right and the fact that the ACC is like, oh, well, we're not going to buy into the nil deals. We're not going to you know, you know, and and the SEC did. Boy, the SEC has been so dominant. One would argue, right, one of the best conference performances maybe in the history of the NCAA tournament where the ACC what they've maybe one team still alive, if that's.
Coming into today. There were more Patinos still in the tournament too than there were ACC teams won. So that kind of tells you, you know, how bad it's been for the ACC and you know the SEC. It's funny because you know, you've seen a lot of pushback about getting fourteen teams. And I was on Fox Sports Radio during the selection show, and you know, I thought Texas probably shouldn't have been in fifteen losses. It's just too many. But when you start going through these teams, it's like, you know, out of conference tess the matter and all these great all these teams weren't great out of conference. You know, Oklahoma, who was miserable in the SEC. They beat Arizona, they beat Louisville, they beat Michigan out of conference. I mean, those are three great out of conference wins. Are they not supposed to get credit for him? You know, Georgia beat beat Saint John's in the out of conference portion of the slate, and then the inverse of that. Part of the reason why North Carolina should not have been in they I think they were zero to four, oh to five against the SEC and that was before yesterday when they lost the Old miss And so, Anita, you're one hundred percent right. Is whether we like NIO or not, it's here. It's pay for play. We wish it was maybe something a little bit different than it is. But I think there's a couple of schools now that are playing catch up. I mean North Carolina was pretty public. They hired in the last week or last month or so a quote unquote GM and his job is to basically go out and raise funds because I think North Carolina thought, you know, hey, we can get We're Caroline up. Kids don't want to come here for the money. They want to come here for the front of the jersey and play with Jordan. No, kids don't care, especially when you now have potentially life changing money at the college level. So I think the ACC will catch up. I think some of these coaching hires that they've made, you know, Jay Lucas going to Miami. Of course, that's John Lucas's son, who is the lead assistant at Duke will Wade officially signing a contract today with NC State. I think the younger coaches are going to drag that conference into the new era because there's obviously been a lot of turnover. I think there was a lot of resistance from that old guard of Roy Williams and Tony Bennett or whatever. Well, these new guys are here. You know, they're spending money, and I just think this is the reality of college sports, whether we like it or not.
One of the big stories all season long, obviously is what Rick Patino did at Saint John's. But they get upset today by his old adversary, John Caliperry. You know, coach call as well as anybody, Aaron, give us a little sense because Arkansas has flown under the radar thirteen losses ten seed obviously in a very competitive sec both what as he's walking off that court and I love how they were actually shaking hands before the game was actually officially over. But knowing coach cal as, you do, how big was this win for him today to beat Patino and Saint John's.
Well, those two don't like each other. I know you guys are probably on air during this game, but you know, the play by play and color commentator went through their two meetings with the two coaches yesterday, and the insinuation was basically like, they don't like each other, they don't talk, they don't whatever. But I think what today, I don't think it's about the win over Patino necessarily. It's weird because it's not about the win over Patino, but the winover Patino is the thing that listen. You know, I don't care. I know a lot of people don't follow college basketball on a day to day basis, but the way John Calipari was treated on the way out by Sintuckie fans, the guy that bought them a national title, and most Kentucky fans are great, But then, you know, I think, on top of it, there were a lot of Kentucky fans and frankly a lot of people who cover Kentucky in the media that every time Arkansas would lose this season, it would be Kentucky fans in Kentucky media who made it a priority to let Arkansas fans know what a mistake they had made by hiring coach cal And so I found it weird. I think here're certainly when coach you don't have to root for Coach Callen when he's playing your team. He obviously blew the crap out of him, But to openly want to see this guy fail for some sort of vindication or some sort of confirmation bias I found weird. So listen, I think what he proved was what I would say is where he proved is the end of his relationship at Kentucky work the best for everybody. In defense of Kentucky, I think they have a very sharp young coach and Mark Pope, who obviously played in the NBA, played at Kentucky, and I think they're going to be great going forward. But I also think for John Caliperry, I think he needed that fresh start. I think no matter what he did at Kentucky, it wasn't going to be good enough, and there was a big percentage of the fan base that was never going to embrace him going forward as the head coach. And I'll tell you this, you know, get ready for tomorrow because if Kentucky were to lose to Illinois, and you guys might know the points, but I actually don't have it in front of me. If Kentucky, Kentucky were to lose to Illinois and coach Cal's in the second week is in Kentucky isn't. Yeah, I think there's going to be some people wondering if they made a mistake at that school, even though again, ultimately I don't think they did.
Illinois is favored by one and a half.
Just FYI, that's right?
Yeah, yeah.
That tip off five fifteen pm Eastern time tomorrow, so erin I have all one seeds advancing to the final four. I know it's only happened once in the history of the tournament? Am I crazy? I feel like I'm not considering our conversation that we've had for the last seven minutes.
You're not crazy. You know I didn't. I didn't do it because I knew i'd get lectured on social media by everybody smarter than me saying that you know, you know what kind of analyst they're expert or you or whatever. But listen, I think what's interesting is kind of the trajectory of the season for I think about eighty percent of it, we thought Alburn was by far the best team, Duke had always kind of had that win over Auburn kind of at the top of their resume. Then Duke is awesome, and then kind of the Koopa flag thing. I think it just took some eyes off of Duke, and then of course Florida goes on the run at the SEC tournament, beats two top five teams, and now I think they were everybody's projected favorite going in. And oh, by the way, the team that I didn't mention is Houston, which has literally lost one game since Thanksgiving week, which I still think. By the way, it's not like they're playing, you know, no disrespect to the WCC or what Kazaggat used to do back in the day. Think twelve is a real league. Arizona's good BYU is good, Iowa State's good. Houston went nineteen and one and has lost one game since Thanksgiving week, and so I do think that group has separated themselves. Now I don't have the Auburn score in front of me, I know that game just started. I do think Auburn felt fell back to the pack a little bit, but they still obviously have a resume second to none coming into the tournament. So if anyone's giving you a hard time, Anita, you know you tell them where to stick it, because I think that I think you have one hundred percent validity. I've seen a lot of people actually go with the four number one teas, and I think they were very clearly the four best teams all season long. They obviously have four great resumes, and so you know, like I said, I didn't do it because I'd get lectured too much and yelled at. But I think there's a lot of smart people that feel the exact same way you do.
Well.
By the way, Auburn leading Creighton only nineteen to fifteen eleven minutes ago in the first half, there, Michigan fans are screaming keep airing on because as soon as you came on, the Wolverines won on a nine to zero run to take a five point lead, and m has cut it now seventy five to seventy two, Michigan now leading A and M inside five minutes to go in that game. All right, Aeron, Well, I'm certainly not going to make any predictions about the future of my brackets because I've seen too many collapses over.
The years in my brackets.
I just you know, for one day, it was it was it was fun, Aaron, it was fun.
As the defending Fox Sports Radio Bracket champion, You'll be happy to know my bracket is in absolute shambles right now. So congratulations and yeah, oh, good luck to your Bruins tonight. I'll be on air during the.
Bruins game tonight, so h so yeah.
See that's a little hard for me. I never expect to do well with the brackets. I picked Tennessee to beat UCLA, but you know, I'm going to root for my Bruins. So you know, if Ucla destroys my brackets, I'll take it.
I want the Bruins to win, obviously.
Can I say something really quick? I took Utah State in that game solely because I thought McK cronan was going to start whining about having to fly east again. Like if they had played in the West Regional and they had played in Seattle, I would have taken UCLA by a million. I really appreciate mc cronin deciding this is the one time all year, including the Big Ten Tournament a week ago, that he's not going to complain about travel and just focus on coaching. I mean what she had done that like three or four weeks ago, you know, when the team was kind of couldn't win in the Eastern and Central time zones. But it was nice of them to just wait until the tournament's actually focused.
Don't be bad mouthing my guy. He's my guy, Mick Cronin.
I love.
I don't really need your badmouth. I mean, every time he kind of goes to the podium, he kind of makes it a little bit easy.
I don't really have to do most of the work, Aaron, enjoy the rest of the weekend. As always, we love your input here, especially the Wolverine fans because they're up by five right now. Well, let's go look forward to your show coming up, the Great Aeron Tours. Thanks so much, Aeron.
All right, thank you both, have a great afternoon, and we'll talk soon.
Thank you.
All right, that's Aaron Torres. We'll get more into what Anita has to say about the games coming up, but first, but first, let's find out what is trending right now. And I was giving him the the desk there earlier for his Wolverines who were playing lousy basketball.
And what did I do?
Give me an old calm down. I was like lifting to Aaron Rodgers, relax, relax, And now they're up by seven.
You sure that Aeron Torres doesn't want to do the next four minutes of this, you know, because I'd like that to be the k seventy nine to seventy two, the score just under four minutes left.
Ooh, that was a nice move.
Eighty one to seventy two to the score Michigan right now on a they were an eleven to two run. That's four on a sixteen to two run by Martin Wis's quick math might have been fifteen. I just think it saw a team up there. There you go, Michigan degree. I took football math though. Eighty one to seventy two. The score is three thirty seven left in the game. We also have two other matchups going on right now, thirteen thirty seven left in the second half between Texas Tech and Drake forty seven to forty the Red Raiders in the lead, and number one sheet Auburn in a matchup with Creighton nineteen to eighteen.
Auburn in the lead.
On the women's side of things, all Creighton's playing is we well then the nine seed they're too playing eight seed Illinois right now. Illinois with an eighteen to ten lead with three minutes and thirty five seconds left in the fourth quarter. Ninth Mississippi State has a fifty three to forty lead over Cow. Some results from the women's tournament earlier today, we saw Yukon beat Arkansas State one oh three to thirty four, and USC beat UNC Greensboro seventy one to twenty five. Juju Watkins roller ankle didn't finish the game, but the injury not believed to be serious. Oklahoma, North Carolina State, Alabama, Iowa, West Virginia. They all advance to the second round of the women's tournament and met in the men's side of things. Per Due beat McNee States seventy six to sixty two, the Boilermakers advancing to the Sweet sixteen. They'll play the winner of ATEA Gonzaga and one seed. Houston produced six Sweet sixteen appearance in the last eight tournaments, and Arkansas beat Saint John seventy five to sixty six.
Arkansas advances to the sweet sixteen.
John cut Party's sixteenth appearance in the Sweet sixteen, his first with Arkansas. You know what, Steve, that game will throw back for a lot of reasons, but you know what the number one was for me.
Two guys wearing suits.
Mashing the game on the sideline nice a relic in today's day and age one.
We need to bring back back to you.
Well, then you love McK cronin because he always really dresses.
Now I do, and I honestly almost picked my bracket on. Does this coach wear a tie when he coaches?
Yeah?
Well mc cronin's always sharp suits for UCLA. Great stuff is always Martin. Once again, we're coming to live from the ti raq dot com studios. And don't forget after the show. The podcast is going up. All right, So, Anita, A lot of people have been saying enough already, enough Hartman, enough. Can we hear what Anita has to say about these games later on? I mean, come on, we got BYU Wisconsin, we got Gonzaga Houston, we got your Bruins going up against Tennessee. Let's start with these games right now. Any of these games you really like? Later on?
I do like coming in. I did like Creighton, and they're only up by two right now, twenty five to twenty three, so you could probably still get in on them. I had some plus money. Listen, listen, they played SEC games very tough. Let's not forget they beat Saint John's. They want at yukon top forty and Kim Palm on offense and defense. They hold teams to forty points seventy points or less, and the best assist tournerver ratio in the Big East. So I do like Creighton. So if you like in game betting, that's a game that you can still get on. And then the two games later on tonight, Steve one is Houston going up against Gonzaga. I do like Houston. I'll lay the five and a half. This might be the worst Zags team, right that we've seen in quite a few years. And this is possibly maybe the best Cougars team we've seen in quite a while.
Right.
They're coming in with a fourteen game win streak. Their defense really can cause some problems for Gonzaga's guards. And this is really interesting stat and I'm always looking at matchups. So Gonzaga depends on inside scoring. Okay, fifty percent of their points is two point field goals and that's the nineteenth highest rate in college basketball. Houston, as we know, their defense is outstanding. They force teams to shoot three pointers at a forty three percent rate because teams cannot They just do not have success with the two point shots, which is thirty eighth lowest rate in the country. Houston's defense creates for opposing teams, so this is just not a good matchup for Gonzaga. So I do like Houston, I'm gonna lay the points, and then later on tonight, I know they're your UCLA team. Yeah, I do like Tennessee. Here, I'm gonna lay the five and a half. This is gonna be a pro Tennessee crowd considering that they're playing in Lexington and Tennessee's defense is just unbelievable top five and Kim Palm allowing thirty eight percent shooting, third best in the nation, perimeter defense twenty eight percent from downtown. They first, They forced about twelve, if not more turnovers a game, only allowing opponents to score sixty three points per game, and that's against SEC teams. So that's uber impressive. And they arguably have the best player on the court. So I'm gonna go I'm gonna go with two favorites. I've really I've been all over the dogs here and I've lost my butt so far in this big dance. So I've got to go with the two favorites. And I like these two matchups again, Houston minus five and a half in Tennessee minus five and a half as well.
Now u CLA, look, I have to admit, I mean they've been all over the map this year. I mean they've had some games, they had quality wins. They beat Michigan State, they beat Gonzaga, they beat Arizona early in this season. Their last regular season game, they blow the doors off USC. Then they get blown out, embarrassed, McK cronin said, by Wisconsin, and then come back with a really dominant performance against Utah State. Utah State just couldn't make a shot, and so you know, all of a sudden, I got some of these bruined fans and they were like, oh, what bruins are back. I'm like, yeah, Well, if Tennessee shoots like Utah State did, they got a chance. And if U SLA can knock down free throws and knock down three point shots, but they just don't have that kind of arsenal. BYU has been a pick by many, including years truly to actually go a little bit deeper in this tournament. I have them moving on to the Sweet sixteen. How much faith do you have in BYU going up against Wisconsin, which is basically a pick them game.
Well, I didn't have faith in them at all because I had VCU Oh, I'd VC you coming out of that matchup BYU, so and I just I really like Wisconsin. Also, I look at teams that are playing really well and are really hot coming into the tournament. In Wisconsin is one of those teams. So I don't have a I don't have a quote unquote play on that matchup, but I do have Wisconsin advancing.
All right, I'm gonna get out a little bit early because on the other side, Anita's gonna flip the page two tomorrow, Yes, eight more games to determine which teams end up in the Sweet sixteen. She will give you her best plays. This is Fox Sports Saturday.
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Steve Harvin and Anita Marx. Here Fox Sports Saturday. We're live from the tai Iraq Dot com studios. Of course you want to thank our help today Martin who now will have his own show coming up with Zach Harper. So we got that. You know, he just goes from one studio to the next. Mary mack Yo good tunes today. Mary mac has always appreciate all your efforts. And look who showed up today.
Ryan.
Big day coming up for him and he's going to get married soon. He's been Wow. This has been like an ongoing story. How many years have we worked together here, birsh what at least five sis something like this. We've been talking about this forever. But he had his bachelor party, so I mean that that's usually a sign that it's soon.
So so so what did it? What made you?
Like?
Was it just did you wake up one morning?
Were you?
I don't know, this was a good question. I'm glad you had like.
What like, what what was the moment that you said, you know what, I'm going to do it?
Ah geez? I think it was, uh, it kind of just more and more overtime. I felt like this I should probably get around. I love the way that sounds. By the way, of course I wanted to. It's just you know, I Notoriou said, rag my feet on everything. So yeah, well that's okay.
You have a beautiful bride to be, so looking forward to that, all right, Anita. By the way, just one note on UCLA Tennessee coming up, as Michigan right now has a five point lead if Michigan does hold on to be Texas. A and M got a minute ago, so still plenty of time for the Aggies here. The Big ten is undefeated so far, and even though it's hard for me to actually say that UCLA is a Big ten team, technically they are so the Big ten. Anita undefeated so far, nine and zero, looking to go ten and oh with a Michigan win over A and M.
Yeah, pretty pretty unbelievable. And you know, again coming in, you know, I favored a lot of SEC teams just because of the fact, you know, fourteen teams that got the invite to dance, pretty pretty remarkable.
And six have been eliminated.
It six have been eliminated. But you know, in in per our discussion when we opened up the show and then our discussion with Aaron, it's a new day. It's a new day. People with with with ni l's and transfer portals, which by the way, and just real quick, because I know we want to continue to talk college basketball, but you know, keep an eye on what's going on with U n C and in their football program with Bill Belichick, because Bill's there and he's he's he's now coaching a team in the a c C. And again, they have not bought in to the NIL situation, and so I think there's gonna be a lot of pressure on him this season because you know, they they don't have a lot of money in that pot to play, to pay players to transfer and whatnot. So so much is writing on Bill and his coaching staff this year, and I'm really intrigued to see how well or how poorly UNC plays this year.
All right, So as far as I agree with the one hundred percent, by the way on that, and I don't think Bill's going to be there long just my prediction. All right, let's just a note. I had a laugh about this one. So Yukon won their first game. They've won thirteen consecutive NCAA Tournament games. They're like, well, that ties the record of Duke ninety one to ninety three in the post nineteen eighty five era, which means we're just a racing history with John Wooden and UCLA thirteen or row. UCLA with John Woodhen won thirty eight consecutive NCAA Tournament games. So I don't want to hear about this. They're tied a record, that's not a record. The record is thirty eight, not thirteen. What about that Yukon Florida game?
Yeah, I love Florida. Here, I've got Florida going all the way and winning this whole damn thing. How can you not?
Right?
They check all the boxes, guard, play, front court, backcourt, defense, top four in both offense and defense, and Ken Palm, great coach, unbelievable players. I mean, if ever there was, they might just be the only quote unquote complete team in this tournament.
Steve nine and a half a big number.
I'll lay it.
You're laying the nine and a.
Half, I'll lay it.
Listen, twelve and two. They've covered their last fourteen games, Yukon four and six against the spread their last ten, and really, at the end of the day, they really do have a shaky defense. And like I said, Florida just Florida checks all the boxes. So I'll lay the nine and a half.
All right, What other games. Do you like tomorrow?
I got one more for you in regards to what I'm going to wager on, and that is Duke. It's another big number. It's eleven and a half going up against Baylor. But again, Duke top four offense, defense, They just you know, they love to smash people, right, Like what I love about Duke is like they will be beating you and there's no foot off the gas flag of course is back, no concern there in regard to his ankle injury. And Baylor really at the end of the day the worst in the Big three, in the Big twelve in regard to three point shooting. So I just don't think that they're going to have the firepower to stay lock step with what Duke's gonna bring to the table. So again, double digits a big number. If you're scared, say you're scared. I'm not scared. I'll lay the eleven and a half with Duke. Those are my two plays heading into tomorrow.
Well, you know I'm moving forward. Aaron made points, Aaron Torres, that you did as well talking about this transfer portal. You know, all these mid majors that have done a lot of damage in the tournament over the last decade or so, their star players are OPTI I mean, think back to when Steph Curry and Davidson made a run to the Elite eight his sophomore season. Can you imagine the transfer portal situation for Steph Curry coming out of that sophomore year. Davidson in those dates. Of course, obviously he's stayed for his junior year. I don't even know if they made the tournament the next year. But I mean, that is something that people really haven't been watching. But you brought it up. Aaron brought it up that the reason that we're not seeing as many upsets have we seen in recent years, at least this year. It could be an anomaly is the fact that a lot of these great players from these mid major schools are opting out and going to the bigger schools and chasing the money. I don't blame him.
No, me neither. Interesting. Interesting with Steph Curry. This might this might shock some people, But Steph Curry, I know for a fact, I lived in Baltimore, Maryland, and it was very very close with the Towson University department. They had a they had an offer for a scholarship for Steph Curry that they took off the table in the eleventh hour because and a number of teams were not offering him deals because they thought he was too small and he was going to get beat up in the paint.
Yeah, so you know, yeah, yeah, there's a lot of people making a living scouting that probably should find another line of work.
I'm always amazed by that. You know, it's I quick story.
I remember when Ricky Williams came out of the University of Texas right so here he is Heisman Trophy winners. You remember the Saints ended up giving up their entire draft to get Ricky Williams. Yeah, Dicka, that was.
The old jes S I cover, Yeah in the wedding dress exactly.
So Ricky had roots in the San Diego area, came down for a workout. I was like, every team sent somebody like, why are you all here? You're not gonna have a chance to draft him. They came down because they wanted to play golf in San Diego and the weather turned out to be horrific, And I heard him bitch in a moaning and then they're holding their stopwatches. What'd you get? What'd you get?
I'm like, what do you mean, what'd you get?
The guy just played four years at Texas, he's the all type leading rusher, didn't say history, and you're worried about what his forty time was. Come on, I mean, so some of these guys are just stealing money out there, all right?
So okay, so your brackets are a mess, but that's okay.
You can't but yours are.
Yours are not, and that's all that matters.
Well, thank you for Mencha. I didn't want to say it again. I'd already gone over, Anita. But by the way, Michigan now in charge. Ninety one seventy nine. We got fifteen seconds to go there, Texas Tech leading Drake by eleven with a four minutes ago, and as you said earlier, look out for Creighton thirty four to thirty three, Craton over number one Auburn. Great job, Anita, thanks so much. Keep it here on Fox Sports Radio.
