The wealthy, connected and elite often got away with things, or were given lenient sentences when compared to the common fold. In ancient Israel, God's Law was different, it was a level playing field and social status was irrelevant. In God's eyes, the Law applies equally to all. That's the real treasure from Mt Sinai.
