A street-corner handoff, a birth certificate that basically says “baby boy,” and a family that chooses a child with no name. Dr. Timothy Mann’s adoption story is unforgettable, and it sets up a deeper question: how does God make it clear that we truly belong to him?

We walk through Romans 8:14-16 and the Bible’s picture of spiritual adoption, where the Holy Spirit doesn’t just change our status, he gives us assurance. We talk about the first confirmation Paul names: being led by the Spirit of God. That doesn’t mean perfect obedience or a doubt-free life. It means our lives are genuinely characterized by God’s guidance, even as we fight sin, face disappointment, and feel the sting of failure. We also name the moments when assurance tends to weaken, like when we neglect Scripture, prayer, and fellowship, and we remind ourselves that our Father wants his children secure.

From there, we explore two primary ways the Spirit leads: illumination and sanctification. Illumination is God turning the light on in his Word so we can understand what we could never grasp on our own. Sanctification is God empowering real obedience, producing peace instead of turmoil. Finally, we contrast slavery and fear with the Spirit of adoption, the gift that moves us to cry, “Abba, Father,” and we close with a compassionate word for anyone facing an unexpected pregnancy, calling the church to practical, lasting support.
