One ancient decision explains a very modern ache: why doing the wrong thing can feel natural, and why death never feels far away. We open Romans 5 and follow Paul’s hard-edged logic from Eden to the grave, starting with the single command given to Adam and the catastrophic change that followed. Dr. Timothy Mann argues that “sin” is more than a list of bad choices; it is an inherited sin nature passed down through humanity’s first representative, which is why no one has to be taught selfishness and why even the most sheltered life still wrestles with rebellion.

From there, we get painfully practical. Death is not just a medical event, but separation: spiritual death from God now, physical death later, and eternal death as the second death Scripture warns about. That lens clarifies why spiritual emptiness persists when we chase happiness apart from God, and why the popular advice to “follow your heart” collapses under Jeremiah’s diagnosis that the heart is deceitful. We also face the objection head-on: how can it be fair to be born guilty? The answer points to grace, because strict fairness would leave no room for the mercy shown in Jesus Christ.

Finally, Paul’s timeline matters. Death reigned from Adam to Moses even before the law was given, proving the universality of sin, and setting up the hope that Adam is a type pointing forward to the One who was to come. Jesus is not just moral inspiration; He is the way out of the mess, removing fear and offering new life through true repentance and regeneration.
