Death is the one fact we all live with but rarely stop to interpret. In Romans 5:12–14, Paul insists that death’s universality is not random or merely biological, it is moral and spiritual, tied to the entry of sin into the human world through one man, Adam. That claim can feel heavy, even confrontational, but it also sets up the most hopeful logic in the entire book of Romans: if one man’s act can bring condemnation, then one man’s righteous act can bring justification and life through Jesus Christ.
We start by talking about something simple and often misunderstood: the public reading and preaching of God’s Word is worship. Then Dr. Timothy Mann walks carefully through Romans 5:12–21, explaining why this passage is considered difficult and why faith does not require us to master every mystery before we obey what Scripture says. Along the way, a real-life moment of sudden grief becomes a sober reminder of how quickly death can arrive and why Paul’s question matters to every family.
From there we get to the heart of the text: sin entered the human realm through Adam, not as isolated “sins,” but as sin in the singular, an inherited sin nature that spreads through human solidarity. We also address why a historical Adam is not a side issue. If Adam does not represent humanity in the fall, the Bible’s claim that Christ represents humanity in righteousness collapses.
