Religion can make you feel right while you’re actually pushing people away from God. That’s the uncomfortable tension we sit in as Dr. Timothy Mann continues our Romans series, Guilty to Glory, and lets Paul challenge the religious person who trusts Bible knowledge, moral effort, and spiritual status instead of trusting Jesus Christ. If you’ve ever wondered why church culture can feel harsh or why “good Christian people” sometimes come off as superior, Romans 2 has a startlingly direct answer. 

We talk about the dangers of religious pride, the habit of treating others as “blind” or “in the dark,” and the way Scripture can get used like a hammer instead of a light. Paul’s pointed questions cut through talk-heavy faith that does not match real obedience, and the result is sobering: hypocrisy does not stay private. It can lead to God’s name being shamed among unbelievers, creating barriers that keep people from hearing the gospel of grace. 

From there, the message turns practical. We share two clarifying principles for Christian living and evangelism: it is not our duty to make people be religious, and we should never expect an unbeliever to act like a believer until they are one. The call is not “clean yourself up first,” but “come to Christ,” because real change flows from a real relationship with Jesus, not rituals, résumés, or rule-keeping. If you want a faith that is deeply biblical, genuinely human, and believable to your neighbors, this one will meet you right where you are.
