Sawardeker, Biography: Dr. Sawardeker is an Orthopaedic Surgeon with fellowship training in shoulder, elbow and hand surgery; he holds extensive training in the most up-to-date surgical techniques. Dr. Sawardeker is experienced in shoulder and elbow arthroscopy, arthroplasty, and all aspects of surgery of the hand. He is a dedicated physician who is committed to his patients. Dr. Sawardeker is board certified by The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and he is well respected by his peers in the medical community. Dr. Sawardeker grew up in North Carolina and received his undergraduate degree from Duke University where he graduated with Dean’s List with Distinction in 2000. Dr. Sawardeker earned his Medical and Master’s degrees at the highly-ranked Tulane University School of Medicine. At Tulane he was awarded the Caldwell Award for outstanding performance in Orthopaedics; the award was voted on by faculty and only awarded to one graduating medical student per year. He was also the recipient of the Paracelsus Award for outstanding performance in Pharmacology, inducted into the Arnold P Gold Medical Honor Society, and received the American Heart Association Research Fellowship for groundbreaking work on natriuretic peptides and their regulatory role in cardiovascular mechanics. After graduating from medical school Sawardeker completed five years of Orthopaedic Surgical training at the University of Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital. At Miami he spent time taking care of college and professional sports teams, serving as a team doctor for the University of Miami football and basketball teams as well as the national league major league baseball organization, the Florida Marlins. Due to his leadership and fund of knowledge, he was elected Chief Resident during his senior year of training at Miami. Dr. Sawardeker then completed specialized shoulder, elbow and hand surgical training at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania under the direction of recognized leaders in the field, Dr. Mark E. Baratz and Dr. Dean G. Sotereanos. As a fellow he gained considerable experience in all aspects of upper extremity and limb reconstructive surgery and played a role in the upper extremity care of many of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball players. Dr. Sawardeker has been published in respected peer-reviewed orthopaedic surgery journals and has presented his research and clinical work at orthopaedic surgery meetings domestically and internationally. He is active in many medical societies including American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and the American Society of Surgery of the Hand. He was recently inducted into the American Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons – a society made up of leading national and international orthopedic surgeons who specialize in surgery of the shoulder and elbow. . He maintains leadership positions within multiple orthopaedic organizations. Although his credentials are impeccable and his training superb, what makes Dr. Sawardeker special is his ability to communicate with patients. He is compassionate, affable, and always available for his patients. One of his many goals in patient care is to help patients regain function so that they can return to leading healthy and active lifestyles regardless of age. “It is a privilege and honor,” he says, adding, “to impact just one person’s life is immeasurable and the most satisfying part of my job.”
