A world-famous opera composer who called Florida home since 1947 has died. Carlisle Floyd died Thursday at his home in Tallahassee. He was 95. He first arrived in Florida as a 20-year-old recent graduate, who had come to teach piano at Florida State University. From his FSU office, his popularity and stature in the opera world grew, and throughout his career, Floyd earned numerous awards and honors, including the Guggenheim Fellowship and the National Medal of Arts. He received a Grammy nomination in 2021 for 'The Prince of Players' and was best known for his adaptation, 'Susannah,' which premiered at FSU in 1955. It is one of the most performed American operas, and Floyd is often lauded as being, "the father of American opera," according to the Tallahassee Democrat.
