A Democratic state lawmaker and a non-profit group have filed a lawsuit alleging the Florida Department of Health violated public-records laws by refusing to provide detailed data about the COVID-19 pandemic. The lawsuit, filed late Monday, alleges the Department of Health and Surgeon General Scott Rivkees rebuffed requests to make information like daily case counts, positivity rates and hospitalizations publicly available. The state had previously posted daily reports on its website, including extensive data about cases and deaths. Those reports abruptly ended in early June and less detailed information is now released weekly. The lawsuit states, in part, “Due to the highly contagious nature of COVID-19 and its 'continuing threat' [...] Floridians have an immediate need for access to information about the virus and its impact and spread in particular communities."
