In New Smyrna Beach, a shark bit a Sanford man on the foot Saturday, becoming the ninth reported incident in Volusia County this year, officials said. The International Shark Attack File, maintained by the University of Florida, shows that Volusia County’s five-year annual average is nine. The 35-year-old Sanford resident had just gotten off his surfboard and was standing in knee-deep water when the shark bit him on the right foot, said Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Captain Laura Warner. The man suffered minor cuts and reported the shark was very small, about 2 to 3 feet in length, Warner said. The victim was treated at the scene for the superficial cuts and left the beach in his own vehicle.
