Patients at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville could soon have a new cancer treatment option. The health system is adding a new “carbon ion” treatment facility at the campus; the first of its kind in North America. The new treatment can destroy cancer cells that don’t respond to traditional radiation without damaging surrounding cells. The Mayo Clinic is building a new integrated oncology facility at the campus, and will also include traditional treatments like chemotherapy, radiation and other treatments. The Jacksonville center will also research future treatments.
