A lawsuit filed Tuesday claims Florida officials failed to comply with a new law requiring creation of a public database tracking how justice is delivered across the state. Advocates say the database is key toward exposing racial disparities in criminal sentencing. Florida lawmakers agreed to have use-of-force incidents by police agencies reported quarterly to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida has named as defendants in the lawsuit the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Corrections, along with the Broward County’s clerk of court and sheriff. The organization contends that government agencies have been slow to roll out the database, approved under a 2018 law. The legal action comes just months after lawmakers set a course for the state to provide even more public access to law enforcement data.
