Florida Power & Light Company hopes a new drone and robotic dog will help to access damage to power lines following storms and reduce the impact to its energy grid. During its annual storm training, FPL revealed the newest and largest member in its drone fleet — an autonomous drone-in-a-box. The new technology will assess the energy grid by flying along pre-programmed routes up to two miles out of the pilot’s sight. Drones can safely and quickly capture high-quality photos and videos of power lines while minimizing environmental impact, FPL says. The company also debuted a robotic dog and is studying how it can navigate on uneven terrain and climb, with hopes to enhance service to customers.
