Environmental groups will be back in court again this October claiming the Florida Legislature has misappropriated funds meant to acquire and manage conservation lands with the Florida Forever program. Years after voters overwhelmingly passed a Florida constitutional amendment to use money put into the Land Acquisition Trust Fund to buy conservation lands, the Florida Wildlife Federation, St. Johns Riverkeeper, Environmental Confederation of Southwest Florida and Sierra Club say state leaders have not followed the voters’ will. The groups claim that money has been spent, in part, on a long list of items unrelated to the amendment’s language. In a recent court filing, the groups allege money instead went to DirectTV services, 1,000 camouflage baseball hats for farmers, an art exhibition as well as water and farm pollution reduction, overtime pay for wildfire and hurricane response, and other farm equipment and infrastructure.
