Naples attorney and businessman Tom Grady, who is also chairman of the Florida Board of Education, is facing a federal misdemeanor charge of obstruction of navigable water in the Florida Keys, according to court documents. Grady pleaded not guilty to the charge on October 8th during an initial appearance and arraignment after he surrendered, according to court documents. The charge was filed September 30th, Naples Daily News reports. Grady is accused of excavating or altering the channel within federal waters off the coast of Islamorada without authorization from the Army Corps of Engineers, according to information filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The incident occurred in April 2017.
