Pro-choice supporters will take to the streets in nearly 50 cities across the Sunshine State on Saturday, in rallies for reproductive rights. The marches are part of the national Women's March movement ahead of the U.S. Supreme Court’s return to session on Monday. Advocates hope the pressure will convince the court — and state and local governments — to uphold Roe v. Wade and abortion access. Florida state lawmakers have proposed a bill enacting further restrictions, which would ban abortions from occurring after the sixth week of pregnancy and allow citizens to sue anyone who has knowledge of or pays for a woman to get an abortion. The bill, House Bill 167, otherwise known as the "Florida Heartbeat Act," was formally filed at the end of September.
