Nearly three years have passed since a female Florida State University student and professor were shot to death at a Tallahassee yoga studio by a male shooter who had expressed hatred toward women. The state’s hate crime law hasn’t been changed to punish crimes related to gender, gender identity and people with physical disabilities, the Tallahasse Democrat reports. But State Senator Lori Berman and state Representative Joe Geller reintroduced legislation to amend the state’s 30-year-old hate crime law to recognize physical disabilities, gender and gender identity as hate crime motivators. The state hate crime law already upgrades any offense if evidence of prejudice is involved based on race, color, ancestry, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, homeless status, or advanced age of the victim.
