A law passed earlier this year has legalized the sale of farm-raised Florida largemouth bass, moving the fish from the end of the fishing line to behind the seafood counter. House Bill 669, which went into effect in July, allows for the aquaculture industry to include this species among those it can raise and sell, Treasure Coast Newspapers reports. There are over 4,300 aquaculture facilities throughout the country, including 1,000 in Florida alone. Those businesses grow and cultivate more than 1,500 types of fish, crustaceans and plants. Under the new law, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission must develop a policy to allow for farm-raised bass sales, though some commissioners oppose the measure and spoke against it during a meeting in St. Augustine this week, saying instead that bass should remain a sport fish.
