An Afghan family of six arrived safely in Florida on August 13th. According to Catholic Charities The father, a soldier in the Afghanistan military, his wife and four of his children were among the 640 people packed into the military plane that many saw on the news,. They are also part of the nearly 40 Afghans who have arrived in Jacksonville since the beginning of August, according to local agencies that help with relocations. They came on a Special Immigrant Visa, a program set up specifically in 2006 to allow Iraqis and Afghans to flee to the United States with their families if they helped the government with translation or logistics during the war. Organizations, like Catholic Charities, are expecting a surge of additional Afghan refugees.
