The first of an anticipated 115 refugees from Afghanistan who will start new lives in Tallahassee, Florida over the next year have arrived, prompting a need for housing and other assistance, the Tallahassee Democrat reports. The International Rescue Committee, a resettlement agency that helps refugees assimilate as Americans, has welcomed a dozen Afghan refugees since earlier this month. J.C. Torres, development manager for I-R-C Tallahassee, said larger families are among the new arrivals. Torres said the I-R-C is asking for monetary donations for hotel rooms, Airbnbs, and other short-term housing for refugees, who sometimes arrive at Tallahassee International Airport with only 48 hours notice and in need of a place to stay. He said the I-R-C has seen an outpouring of support already for the refugees.
