Marais' conviction has now been secured, with his sentencing scheduled for January 27, 2025. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is set to visit Stilfontein, in the North West province, amid a growing crisis over illegal mining. This follows reports that a large number of illegal miners remain trapped underground. Local residents recently took action to rescue approximately 4,500 miners they say are stranded beneath the surface. Yesterday, several individuals were successfully brought up, along with the body of one deceased miner. The community believe these miners have been underground for months, surviving with minimal access to food and water.
