The uMkhonto weSizwe Party has submitted a Private Member's Bill to reserve spaza shop ownership strictly for South African citizens. The draft is nearing completion and follows concerns over illegal trade and undocumented foreign nationals. The move comes amid tighter regulation of township economies after foodborne illness outbreaks in 2024 and 2025.
