South Africa now holds key positions across the AU, SADC, and the UN as conflict and rights abuses escalate across the continent. It took up a two-year seat on the AU Peace and Security Council in April, chairs the SADC Council of Ministers since August, and sits on the UN Human Rights Council until 2028. Government has also publicly defended the ICC in recent weeks. The question is whether Pretoria can turn these platforms into real action on peace and accountability. We spoke to Human Rights Watch Africa Executive Director, Ms. Mausi Segun, to discuss South Africa's role in meaningfully advancing peace and human rights on the continent.

This follows the murder of four women in Kempton Park and the mugging of a woman in Centurion. Chikunga says women should not have to choose between safety and health and has called on law enforcement and municipalities to increase police visibility and improve safety in recreational areas. Civil society organisation Not In My Name International has called for urgent police action following the disappearance of runner Elizabeth Mokolo Moselakgomo. The group says it stands with her family and the running community and hopes for her safe return. This after reports that a woman's body was found near Kempton Park where Elizabeth disappeared, although formal identification is still pending. Not In My Name also says it is alarmed by reports that four women's bodies have been discovered in the same vicinity over about two months and has welcomed a police task team to investigate.
