Gauteng education department mourns the death of four learners

View descriptionShare

The Gauteng Department of Education has expressed deep sorrow following news of the deaths of four learners in two seperate incidents. In the first incident, three siblings enrolled at Evaton Primary School in Sebokeng, south of the province, reportedly fell ill at around 08:00 yesterday morning. Department spokesperson, Steve Mabona says two of the learners, a girl in Grade 3 and a boy in Grade 4, were rushed to the school's sick bay after complaining of stomach pains. As the two were being assessed, their sister, a Grade 5 learner, was also found unresponsive at the same school. All three learners were reportedly rushed to a nearby clinic, where they were tragically declared dead. The department says the fourth learner, a Grade 8 learner from Tsakane Secondary School, in Ekurhuleni, died on Monday after she and another learner allegedly ingested rat poison on the school's premises.  For more on this Elvis Presslin spoke to Gauteng Department of Education Spokesperson, Steve Mabona
