The Institute of Race Relations says South Africa's minimum wage has led to a staggering 230,000 job losses in 2024 alone. The Institute says this represents 3.4% of the 6.7 million low-wage jobs in the country, where workers earn up to R7,500 per month. The IRR is blaming the mandated minimum wage of R27.58 per hour for this devastating impact. The Institute is urging the National Minimum Wage Commission to reconsider its recommendation to increase the minimum wage by inflation, plus 1.5%. This comes on the heels of an 8.5% increase in the minimum wage announced by the Department of Employment and Labour in early 2024. To elaborate further on this issue, Elvis Presslin spoke to Institute of Race Relations Legal Executive Director, Gabriel Crouse
