“Tall Poppies” - Doug Garland Interview

View descriptionShare

Doug and I have a thoughtful discussion about individuality, burnout, and how to integrate all aspects of ourselves into our daily life. As a long time medical doctor, professor, and practitioner, Doug has a unique perspective on how to dig down deep into ourselves to find out who we are, and how we can support ourselves to find health and optimal self expression. Join us for a thought-provoking, generous conversation that will leave you wanting more.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • As a society we don’t often prioritize or take time for self reflection, which is how we digest and process information and have original ideas.
  • We have been taught that the “tall poppy” growing in the field is the one that gets cut down, but as we move forward into the future it is our unique characteristics that will help reinvent our world.
  • Personal growth can be slow, but if you have faith that things are changing day by day you will see results.
  • Vulnerability, honesty, and supporting each other are true qualities of leadership.

BEST MOMENTS

“Good envy isn’t really talked about...envy is, by psychological standards, a functional state of being.”

“We think that (bullying) is normal, so when you look at our business deals, that behavior you learned as a kid continues on in your life.”

“Leadership is really just making sure that the people under you have all the things they need to do their job properly.”

“The internet gives you the ability to see knowledge, but it doesn’t give you the ability to have wisdom. (Similarly), the problem I’ve had with inspirational books is that they aren’t inspirational enough to make you transform.”
