View descriptionShare

In this episode, Pete speaks to entrepreneur and public speaker Elliot Kay. He is the cofounder of speaker express and works with businesses to reach their full potential, particularly in using speaking as a marketing strategy. He is also a bestselling author and above everything else a Dad and a Husband.

They discuss speaking, business and Elliot’s childhood, as well as his plans for the future.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Elliot appreciates that he has a lot to be thankful for and he has achieved some great success already. But he is future focused and still desires a lot more from his life and business. He wants more because he wants to be able to provide and offer more.
  • When you are speaking in a business capacity you need to think about who you are trying to market to, who it is that is going to buy from you. You also need absolute clarity in the language and communication you use with those in your market.
  • You need to be a great storyteller no matter what market you are in. You’ve got to be able to deliver with impact and be memorable. People will remember how you made them feel, you need current and up to date content.
  • People are now looking for experts that speak rather than ‘speakers’.
  • Fire in the belly to Elliot means that inner, drive, passion and bite to achieve something.
  • As a child and young adult Elliot realises he had a bit of a victim complex. He now knows this was due to a variety of things including abuse and his dyslexia. When his business and relationships started failing he then decided to tackle these thoughts and attitude head on.
  • Elliott suffered from depression a couple of years ago. He found it really difficult to share his feelings with anyone else and it meant that he ended up getting to breaking point before getting help. Comparison is the thief of joy and Elliot knows that his depression was due to him comparing many aspects of his life as well as underlying issues he had with his own self-worth.
  • In speaking structure is important, when you have a solid structure it allows you to play around but end up where you want to end up. Don’t confuse structure with a script.
  • Elliot’s time and career as a dancer taught him many life lessons and has helped him in his business choices and decisions too.

BEST MOMENTS
