Making Your Own Luck -- Dave Combs Interview

View descriptionShare

It’s not often that you get the chance to sit down and chat with an absolute legend, but I got the chance to do just that in today’s episode. Dave Combs had a successful career at a Fortune 500 company when he finally transcribed a melody he’d had in his head for a while. That song eventually became the hit Rachel’s Song, which paved the way for Combs to leave his first career and follow his heart and talent into the music industry. In today’s conversation, we talk about music, lessons learned along the way, humility, and much more.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

+ Something that you create in a pure sense (ie: not trying to be like anyone else) will authentically connect with others, and make a difference.

  • Have someone who knows you well (in Dave’s case, his wife) whose opinion you trust and who will give you solid ideas and advice about your next steps.
  • Be willing to fight and work hard for your dream and let go of where you think you’ll end up. Have joy in the work.
  • Your life and your “life’s work” will be so much better if you let others collaborate with you.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “ I learned to not rely upon just my own gifts, but to bring my circle of friends and other  people who are more gifted than I am, into what I’m doing. And that really applies to any kind of business, you need to surround yourself with people that are smarter than you are, and make that team as strong as it can be, rather than relying solely on yourself.”
  • “I can sit down at the piano and I'll just hit one chord. And I'll listen to it ring for a minute or so; it'll ring on the piano for a long time. And if you really listen to it, for those that play an instrument, they know what I'm talking about. You can close your eyes and let that sound and that music come into your soul and it almost transforms you.”
  • “ I figure my philosophy has always been you either go over to under or around it or through it. That's my philosophy about a wall.”
  • “What I have learned is that – for any young person that has the fire in their belly to do something, and if they’ve proven that they're not just dreaming, or they're all in –  something they need to know is that you don't have to know 100%. But once you have that real desire and that level of determination, that fire in your belly, don't look back. You can make your decision, move forward, and good things will happen.”
