I Am A Better Person - Kathleen Metcalf Interview

View descriptionShare

Entrepreneur, business owner and leadership mentor Kathleen Metcalf joins Pete today all the way from Vancouver, USA. Kathleen shares her inspiring story of how she became the best version of herself as she talks through her battle with alcoholism and her financial struggles. Together they discuss the importance of not letting yourself be defined by your possessions, how your failures serve as valuable lessons and how to look for evidence of a higher power in your daily life.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Overcoming tough challenges in your life such as addictions can help you evaluate what wealth and success looks like to you. Think about how you can make a difference in the world and how you can help others, make that your motivation. Your life story has hope and encouragement for others going through a similar time.

  • When you have nothing, you are able to learn that you are someone. You are not defined by your money, house, car, job or your relationships. You are a person who is no better or worse than anyone. Finding yourself through hardship is so valuable. It is okay to have ‘warts and all’, it is just human and there is nothing to be ashamed of.

  • Your failures will teach you valuable lessons. Your failures didn’t kill you, it may have been ‘evil bruising’ but you survived it. It will all work out for you eventually, that is a sign of a higher power. The world is full of love, life is happening for you not happening to you, you are not a victim of life, you are a participant in life.

  • If you are starting again after losing everything, take things one step at a time. You will need to face yourself and it will all work out eventually. Realise that there are a lot of other people who have had similar things happen to them who are afraid to talk about it and don’t know how to get help.

  • It is okay to be sad and depressed for a day or two. You then need to nurture that flicker of hope a little bit more. Think about who you can talk to, what you can read or watch and take better care of yourself. Then that flicker of hope grows. Look for evidence of a higher power, start noticing all the wonderful things that are happening around you, be they big or small.

  • Surround yourself with people that are a fantastic support. The naysayers, the people that don’t relate and the negative people are the ones you should not hang around with. It is okay for them to be that way, but if that is not the way you want to live your life, avoid them. Live in what is possible, it is more fun, more exciting and it is happier.

BEST MOMENTS

“In that willfulness, I didn't listen to my intuition.”

“It is more and more about how I can make a difference and how I can help others than it is about the fact that I am fine, I didn’t die when I failed.”

“I am a very different person, now from then. I am a better person.”

“I am in the dance with life and just because I step on my own toes or I rip the bottom of my dress, doesn’t mean that I am not going to keep dancing.”

“Look for evidence of a higher power.”
