I'm Lola Berry, nutritionist, author, actor, TV presenter, and professional oversharer. This podcast is all about celebrating failure because I believe it's a chance for us to learn, grow and face our blind spots. Each week, I'll interview a different guest about their highs.
As well as they're lows, all in a bid to inspire us to furiously fail. Hello, Hello, boss, Hello listener.
This is an impromptu pod in that we have just lived through Cyclone Alfred.
Here in Byron Bay.
Yes, but it seems like Brizzie's been here, Goldie's been here, and all the way down the coaster has been hit. So we thought, well, let's give a real, real time, real life counter We're officially out the other side of it's now downgraded to a tropical storm yep, although looking at the weather map for hearing in Baron Byron, it looks like it's going to rain all week by one day, Is that right?
Yeah?
So I think we should start off and say that we are very lucky. And obviously we weren't in the worst of worst part of it or the most affected part of her.
No, we got really lucky. Yeah, but it is.
Crazy that like yeah, you know it was in say Brisbane and Gold Coast than we're almost like two hours away from there from Brisie. Yeah, and just how mental it got here as well.
But here's what our myow Jol was teaching is apparently it's the south, like the base of it that gets the worst wind and rain.
Yeah, something like that.
It's the south part of the cyclone. Yeah, and a cyclone hasn't hit land before in our lifetimes, like this is like one generation. Yeah yeah, yeah, I think that the last time Lamb was like nineteen seventy four, yeah, something like that, a cyclone.
So I mean we should talk about the actual timeline because we what day did we get here? We got here Monday, so we land lunchtime. We landed in Australia Monday lunchtime, Monday morning.
Monday morning, Sydney then picked up our bags and transferred onto a flight to Ballana Byron Bay, which is like a little regional town. We got what's called a dash plane here, a Dash eight, a Dash eight, which is like the little propeller plane.
Yeah, it's like the two and the two, so it's like only like one row down the middle and it's like two people, two people that kind of size aeroplane, My wife by none of that, none of that. And it was quite stormy that day. It was very windy that day, and even coming into Ballina was quite a rough.
They're landing, It was like, yeah, you're wif.
Yeah quite How do you feel well? I felt fine.
I knew that I was going to be a little bit rough, so I just just hope for.
The best brace position. I say that you don't like, you don't love.
You don't love the thought of shurbulance, though, do you No? I don't think anybody does. But I knew that it was going to be rough coming in, and but it's over kind of quick as well.
I feel like we got a couple of good days though, Like one day everyone was like, oh, yeah, you've arrived for the cyclone, and we still went down to Main Beach and it wasn't we put our feet in the water, but it wasn't like mental. It was just very very windy, but it was beautiful, beautiful days. People were swimming and surfing and went to the cafe, went to woods, did all that kind of stuff.
And then and then the Tuesday it started to get worse.
So we still got loads done to like still we went to Federal doma like had a beautiful like Japanese meal, had acupuncture and the sun was shining when we were in Dorom. I remember were sitting at the front of the church and some was like amazing. Yeah, and then Wednesday hit Wednesdays when we were all like radio, that's when power.
Went and so yeah, all the power went out Wednesday, so no phone was we didn't.
Everyone did panic buying, including us. We got waters and through.
I wouldn't even say that we like bought enough. We definitely could have brought more, that's for sure.
Huge thank you to Bec and Shaan for saying day with us.
So have two friends that have been taking care of us, and we've been using their their generator and you know, their food and their everything.
They've been looking after.
Us, showers, all of it, and like being able to like still work and break pods because tomorrow morning early, you and I drive to Sydney and then I have podcasts in Sydney and then we drive from Sydney to Melbourne and then I pot in Mouths. So I've kind of been using it for this time for podprep, which has been great, but like we haven't had the week that weeks, it's going to be a holiday.
Week, holiday week.
Yeah, yeah, I'll tell you what they As soon as like Tuesday hit, I reckon. I got like fifty messages being like you can't escape natural disasters. We have the fires in LA and then as soon as we come we leave La and then we come back here and then.
It's like tropical stamp. So I did feel like we.
Also were here for the twenty twenty two floods. Yeah, when we lived and got was it twenty two?
Was it? Oh they're they're big floods here. Yeah.
What do you think out of those three they're the main ones about adult life. I know we've been alive for ash Wednesday and all that kind of stuff.
There was the twenty twenty one flood when we got stuck in new While. We made it to I think it's Tari, Tari, that's right, Tari, and then all the freeways were closed so we had to turn around and get Newcastle for five days.
Yeah, directing that was worse for you.
I think that was more traumatic because obviously we weren't at home.
Twenty twenty two ones I got trapped.
Yeah, well yeah, you got trapped. I was on my own for like a week. Yeah, and your flight just kept getting canceled. So at least you're you're in safe, you know, pretty safe. But yeah, I don't know, it's it's pretty crazy to think. I think like as well, though, when you are in like a small town, it does feel I don't know, it's like because there's community is so yeah, community is amazing, it's so strong. But at the same time, like there's not a lot of shops. There's not multiple Woolworths as you know, there's only a.
Couple of peches.
Such a shut guys like Wars was shot because it got so clod. But you were just on instapage shows you say there's nothing on the shelves.
Byron Woolworth's is like empty. Yeah. Is it open?
No, I don't think it's open. No, No, it is, sorry, it is open. Yeah, And that's where people went in and took photos and they were like, yeah, there's on like some a few can tunas left and some random plums or something, but there's Yeah, hasn't got any fresh light, milk, bread, any like vegetables nothing yet. So yeah, so the whole supply chain I think is.
I'm just on the weather app right now. It's one hundred percent rain until seven pm tonight here in Byron, and then Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday all rain and then it gets beautiful from Thursday onwards. I have a feeling a bit of the rain might chase us to Sydney though, because as it moves inland, don't you think. Yeah, it's so fascinating. All my weather apps link to LA now though. So I'm it's twelve degrees in Los Angeles.
Oh that's good fresh.
But if we look at Gold Coast, yeah, same thing. It's it's going to be pouring till Wednesday, so gold Coat. Whatever's going on the Gold Coast And here it's pretty close. But then you look at Malbs and it's like thirty degrees. Oh, thirty degrees where when we get their boss melvs, it'll.
Be twenty nine. That's perfect. Yeah, you look at fourteen Melbourne. Yeah, and I'm looking forward to SIDS. I think SIDS will go pretty quick. SIDS.
We drive tomorrow twenty seven. There'll be rain Tuesday and rain Wednesday, which is fine because we're not driving. I'll be podcasting. Yeah, you've got a few meetings and stuff, and then for that day we're driving to Malves will be sunny all day, so that's kind of like easy driving.
Yeah, so fine.
But yeah, like it's been it's totally been fine. We've been so lucky. We've been staying with great mates. But I imagine if we were like didn't get all like flu from La to Byron like two days later, or something would get trapped.
In Sydney, we wouldn't have made it, which is also fine. We would have been fine in Sidney.
Do you reckon? Yeah, we wouldn't have had a car nothing. You got my sister, Yeah, but when what have we come here? I don't know. We would have figured it out. Yeah, it was. It was a bit of a bit of a piggledy. Yeah.
We did play a lot of Monopoly this week, Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters Monopoly. I kept getting beat by a seven.
Year old how old's.
Gill, I think eight seven or eight year old and he keeps beating me every time.
But that's been actually really fun. We did venture out. We haven't eventually.
We've gone today to Uruba, which is a beautiful Hindland town and just had a coffee. It still feels very quiet ghost town vibes. Like a lot of places as shut. But yesterday we ventured out. We had to go into Bayron just to pick some stuff up from a friend, and we saw a tree on a car. We saw a tree completely uprooted, tree uprooted, and we were behind the trucks where they've cut down all these trees on Main Beach.
Yeah, so on Main Beach there's those are they like pine trees? Yeah, like giant pine trees which got to be like one hundred year old trees. Yeah, and I think they cut down one or two of them.
Yeah, that was kind of sad. Yeah, but like if you think of Byron, you think of like the farm in Byron Bay or.
Like all like woods.
They I don't think they've got doesn't main street of Bangalos still not have power.
I don't know.
There's there was only one shop open today that was it.
Yeah wow. Yeah.
You know what I love about cyclones and natural disasters. You can always guarantee that the bottle shop is going to be open. They must have their own like special power supply. But the by like the Byrons cellar, yeah, opposite woolies that stayed open the.
Entire timely got generators.
Maybe I don't know, but it's just it's always while to me that the one thing that's always open is a bottle shop. But yeah, also that little general in Uribar, they had a big one, a big generator. The service station actually that well they don't serve alcohol here, but so only one service station slash General store in Bangalob was open because I had a generator. So there's definitely the key. I think if you're going to live in these areas, got to have a generator.
Dracon. They're not cheap booth.
No, but you can. You can get one for like two grand that does the trick. Yeah, you know that runs like the fridge, and you know you can run your fridge internet.
It's I think that's the thing. It's fridge internet, hot water hot water.
Yeah, it's it.
I've forgot this about because obviously we lived in Byron before La. Yeah, and I forgot about like when it does rain, it kind of grounds you a little bit here, Like, well you should see if the movies are open boom, Yeah, we can have block go to the movies to night.
Maybe when we come back, my lover, why huh, we'll have more time when we come back.
Yeah, yeah, that's true.
Yeah, so yeah, it does ground you. And when the power goes out, it goes out for days. When the internet goes out, it goes out for days.
And then you're trying to work and the rest of the world or the rest of Australia is fine, and you're like, shits, I've got an email podcast, I've got to like, I've got a little bit stressed.
I would say you forget as well, like can't use FPOs h.
You know, we live in a digital world. We went to coin laundry, didn't you do it?
I went to a coin launder Yeah, but I didn't, so I didn't tell you. They obviously take f pos at the coin laundry, but all of that was offline. So I had to then go find an ATM, which likely I found an ATM. Yeah, and then I got twenty bucks out of the ATM.
Really.
Yeah, we got a bit of Australiana cashola left on it.
Yeah.
I think I don't even know where it is to my my pocket. Yeah, yeah, I do, got six dollars left. It's been a while since I've handled cash. But yeah, and then obviously we hadn't done washing in a week. So when I did all the washing.
I'm wrapped.
I did my first bit of I don't know about you the listener, but like if I don't move and exercise in some capacity, I go mental. And so like today, well we did half a lighty the other day before it really settled in.
Was that on whend No, Tuesday? Tuesday? We did that, did we but we still got wet? We weren't drenched. Yeah, what was starting to roll in? Oh, we've got a breakfast in a top shop. No, we've done quite a bit. We've done a breaking at top shop, We've done on lunch at Woods, We've done it. What else have we? We've done a lot. We went a ound MYO therapist. Yeah we did. Yeah, yeah, we survived.
I feel like we got a lot in just not the last two days.
Yeah, no, three days since since the power went off. We've done that like pretty.
Muchmuch just worked from our laptops and stuff. I've got a dog next to me McGhee.
Yeah, and he's dreaming and like little legs and thing a twitching and moving. He's pretty cute. He's like a little old boy sixteen years old. So yeah, look we're fine. We survived.
I think Gold Coast probably got if you know, any mates on the Goldie checking.
With the Gold Coasts and Brizzy definitely checking on them. Yeah.
For us, it was inconvenience, but you know, nothing got damaged. It's kind of nice though. It was nice to ground get over the jet lag. Yeah, without kind of like needing to be anywhere.
But we weren't really jet lagged. I was waking up at five, which is a jet LaGG thing. Do you reckon when you come from LA.
You're still I feel like you're still waking up at normal, like your normal times, like six am.
Yeah, but the first few was five really yeah, and I get so tired at night, you know.
Yeah, I still think that's normal for you, right, Oh, Rdio, get the eight o'clock, nine o'clock and you're ready.
For bed always. Yeah.
So what what was something that you learned or what was a takeaway from this view?
I mean, again, how just like resilient we are.
That we keep you know, we have these little things that like pop up and you just deal with them the best as you can. I think that's you know, important to remember. Yeah, and very grateful to have friends Beck and Sean that helped.
Us we got organize their surprise boo, yes we do something.
And then also how how resilient communities are and you know, people show up for each other and check in on each other and do all that kind of stuff.
So what was like the hardest thing for you? I think I think it's just.
Like the uncertainty of having electricity and phone reception is probably the hardest thing. But other than that, yeah, no props, no, no probs. Yeah, but I think it's like, yeah, just being like, oh shit, how long is this going to go on for we're going to be able to leave, We're going to be stuck here. We're going to run out of food and water in a couple of days. But yeah, we made it through. We're all fine, and we had a little piccup. Yeah. I think today we had a little maybe we're just a little bit a little bit stir crazy.
Yeah, And I think you and I handle stresses in different ways. And whereas like I have to over analyze and plan, yeah, like I have to have a plan out of it, Like I have to know what I'm going to do and I have to feel like I'm moving forward in some capacity, whereas You're very comfortable to kind of like wait for the dust to settle and just see it out.
Yeah.
Well, I think in these situations like, yeah, you have a plan of what you're going to do if it all goes to shit, But the other side of that is you just have to let it play out. So it's like, yeah, it's raining, I said, you just got to stay inside, and I think that, Yeah, I think that you probably get a bit stir crazy. You can't go for walks, and it's harder to exercise and do things for mental health where you know, I'm happy to sit and read and do breath work. Yeah. Still, I'm only I'm like two thirds the way through what's it called for?
Next Time?
And I've finished one book and I'm onto my second now Candice Fox book. I'm currently reading high Wire.
What does it look like? I'm about a third of the way through. Yeah, you're about third way through, and.
I've finished the other one about the Two Sister Investigators.
That's a full, big book and this.
Time so I think it's just about like it forces you to slow down and to see, like turn a little bit more inwood, which I think you're really good at. And I think I'm like I need to because I also had some podcasts canceled because of the cyclone, and so we go to Sydney and I'm recording pods and there's a spot empty right now, and it is that stressing me out quite a bit, and I was like ringing around like.
People that could jump on you know.
But yeah, I'm definitely someone that's like mcguy V your way out of a situation or like plan and stay like sharp and asserted. That's kind of like my way through stressful scenarios and being like over prepared and all that, whereas you're much more go with the flow. And as a result, we went loggerheads, didn't we?
Yes? We did? Are we Okay? Now? Yeah, I quite like confrontation. It doesn't bother me.
Like I would rather sit in the uncomfortableness of like yucky conversation and then be able to come out the other side and be like, Okay, well I can see that we handle.
These things really really different. I feel better, do you?
Yeah, Like I said, I don't what, Yeah, just funny, I don't know. I don't see it as a bad thing to I think it's completely normal to.
Well, we've got a drive. We're going to be stuck in the car together for eight hours.
Better to mols. Yeah, you're in charge of the music. American road trip, American road trip.
Probably, I've got to do some plod listening though in preparation.
We can do that.
I just got to like focus on the Pollos for the next yetle Bit don't.
So we're Sydney and then after Sydney we're going to Melbourne. Yes, and then we're coming back to the Barn. Yes, exciting.
What's one thing you're looking forward to in each location?
Sydney just seeing my sister brother in law hanging out there. I think actually the whole the whole thing I'm looking forward to is just seeing family as we haven't seen anyone in yeah, over a year.
I think it's February when we see your.
Parents' fiftieth wedding anniversary in feb that's the last time we saw them. Yeah, she's nuts crazy, Yeah yeah, Okay, so few it's just family, Sid's pods because I'm filming at a whole new pod studio and looking forward to that.
Can I say botox? I'm thirty nine, I can say botox, can't I? And then.
Malbs obviously Fanbam, but we're doing a stay at an influencer stay at a hotel called Motley, and we're doing an influencer.
Thing like a mud bath. Mud bath is it?
Yeah?
I think it's cooled mud barring thing. We're doing that as well. What's that called sense of soul? Is that right? Sense? So o s And then I'm looking forward to that.
I'm looking forward to going Dalsford Farm obviously, Mom and Dad and Fanbam and your nephew is going to be so much bigger. And then I'm looking forward to getting back here. But I'm anxious about it because we haven't planned it yet. And so just coming back to that needing to plan side of things, like let's just get let's just get to Melbourne.
Yeah, and then we'll pull the triggers, all.
The triggers, and then we'll be and then we'll be putting our feed up. We have a couple of days off to relax.
Yes, sorry, And in Melbourne I'm doing acting school. I'm so pumped.
Yeah, okay, well I'm excited to do it all with you. Oh good, yeah, good good good, all.
Right, love you.
We just wanted to give you an honest check in from the cyclone. Back to regular programming next week. We have long form pod all set up and ready to go, and of course you'll get your diary every Friday and then you're hot seat on Wednesdays.
