Q+A: Is it time to get rid of stamp duty?

View descriptionShare

Stamp duty is one of the biggest additional costs homebuyers face - and many economists argue it's also one of Australia's most inefficient taxes. If we got rid of it, it may encourage people to buy and sell more easily, freeing up family homes and reducing pressure in the market. But if governments abolished it, how would they replace the billions of dollars it raises each year?

Sean Aylmer speaks with Nerida Conisbee, Chief Economist at Ray White, about why stamp duty discourages people from moving house, whether a broad-based land tax is a better alternative, and what governments should do to increase housing supply.
