The Lincoln Project's Rick Wilson joins host Molly Jong-Fast to react to a clip of Donald Trump boasting that the country is "making a fricking fortune" from oil while Americans struggle with high gas prices. He calls it classic Trump failing to read the room and jokes that Trump seems to be trying to lose. The two then dig into the state of the midterms: polls aren't tightening the way they usually do before an election, Democrats hold steady leads in several states, and Republicans have poured enormous sums into Texas with little to show for Ken Paxton. They look at early voting among young, low-frequency Hispanic voters in Texas who are angry about the economy, immigration enforcement and ICE. Wilson argues that tariffs were the inflection point that drove away casual MAGA supporters, and the pair name tariffs, the Epstein files and the Middle East war as a "trifecta" that has damaged Trump's coalition. They also mock Todd Blanche's defense of the Justice Department wading into Alaska's Senate race and compare this cycle to the wave elections of 1974, 1980, 1994 and 2006, stressing that voters can't spin away gas and grocery prices. In the final stretch, Wilson urges Democrats not to grow complacent, to vote early and to stay focused on the economy and corruption, while predicting a last-minute stunt from Trump. The conversation closes with his scathing breakdown of Vivek Ramaswamy's widely condemned ad about Amy Acton's estranged mother, which he says has backfired so badly that it could hand Ohio a Democratic governor and haunt J.D. Vance, who defended it.
