The Lincoln Project's Rick Wilson & Molly Jong Fast argue that Donald Trump’s presence on the campaign trail is now a liability rather than an asset, with the people around him looking more like a “core binky team” than serious political strategists, and he says polls are showing Republicans sliding as voters reject the gaslighting around the economy, inflation, and rising fuel costs. He points to races in places like Florida, Alaska, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Texas as examples of candidates being squeezed between needing Trump’s help and fearing his damage, while also noting that money and attacks are losing their power in the current climate because voters are increasingly connecting local Republicans to Trump and holding them responsible for the economic pain they’re experiencing.
