Planned Parenthood CEO Alexis McGill Johnson joins host Molly Jong-Fast to explain why the post-Dobbs country is in a new wilderness, with about 20 states imposing significant abortion bans and 13 of them criminal bans, while Planned Parenthood has faced defunding that forced the closure of 30 health centers in rural and medically underserved communities. She lays out how abortion bans have made pregnancy more dangerous and deepened the maternal health crisis, with maternal mortality in some states up 234%, especially among Black women, as people die in the postpartum period while facing poor healthcare access, racism in medicine, and other social determinants. She details Republican attacks on Title X funding, Medicaid, trans communities, Black and brown patients, and women, and warns that more restrictions are coming, including a review of mifepristone meant to create another barrier to access. She also ties the fight over reproductive freedom to broader attacks on democracy, voting rights, and affordability, and makes the case for continuing to fight for a federal right to abortion and to claw back freedom in 2028.
