The New York Times Maggie Haberman explains that her book Regime Change went deep into the behind-the-scenes workings of Trump’s administration and why this second term is different from the first: a much smaller inner circle makes decisions, dissent is largely absent, and even key officials can be kept out of critical planning because of leak fears. She says the book shows how the administration repeatedly pushes extreme ideas, like the Insurrection Act or suspending habeas corpus, as “loaded weapons on the shelf,” while also noting there is no reporting that such a move is being discussed for Election Day. On the midterms, she argues Trump tends to keep pushing until he can’t, but he appears more focused on legacy, power, money, and attention than on another term, and she believes he doesn’t fully process what the next two years will look like.
