Brett Goldstein's been listening to Fake Doctors since the beginning, and we may have a new number-one fan. He tells us about his first time working with Donald Faison on the pilot Spced Out. Zach tells us about the first time he met Brett while working on Ted Lasso. We also learned that Brett's mom likes to text during movies. Donald and Brett share their mutual love of Jason Segel's Muppets movie. Plus, we get a classic Bill Lawrence interruption.

I saw something I wanted to buy you, but then I thought Casey said there was a moratorium unbuying you anything Star Wars.
Okay, so here's the thing.
I just want to know if I had permission to buy you this cool thing I saw.
It depends on what it is.
If it's something to be turned into a set prop, no, absolutely.
It's something you can hang on your wall.
Oh, if it's like a vintage poster.
Should I tell you? And if you like it, it could be your Christmas present.
No, because I want my Christmas present. I want you to think like you would buy something that you would buy for yourself for Christmas. Because I've really gotten into lenses and.
I'm not buying you a camera. Well, I'll just tell you because I don't think Casey's going to allow it. But I stumbled across this amazing Italian poster for the original Star Wars that it's uh, it's original. It was the original Star Wars poster. You guys should google this. But it was almost it was like done like a cartoon, like they didn't take the exact art of the movie. The Italians, I guess in seventy five was it sort of did an interpretation of it, and it was it's really cool.
Is it this one?
Get Ustelardi? Yes, hold that up. Look Donald, it's so Goodol, it's beautiful. You're raising her hand. Allowed to buy you the Italian Star Wars?
Why would Casey say that couldn't be bought?
I thought that Casey was like, please, no more Star Wars ship on our walls.
Please please. She sounds like a prospector Still.
I feel like the last time I brought up something like this, she was like, I'm begging you.
I need some nice art nothing Star Wars.
Please.
Your Casey comm impersonation is spot on. Bro.
Yeah, I'm begging you.
Please.
We got enough.
I'm begging they got enough.
If we have one more Star Wars thing, I'm moving out.
We already got tach Twin in the Garral She liked the indie poster I Got You, though, I got you, I Got you the UK the original UK Indiana Jones poster where he has a blue T shirt.
Where he has a blue shirt on instead.
Of I saw it in a movie, in a movie that took p in a movie theater. In that era, there was this in the UK, there was this gorgeous horizontal og Indiana Jones poster and I was like, I quickly googled there because I knew that must be original. They're not going to put the fake thing up. And then I found it. I tracked one down and I had it put on linen and I had it framed for Donald.
Let me ask you a question, when was It's an amazing poster, first of all, and it made me think of this, and I've been wanting to talk about it on the podcast for a long time, and I keep forgetting because I smoked so much weed. But when was the last time? But they can it'll It'll happen eventually. When was the last time that you watched Raiders of the Lost Ark? All of you are masking all.
Of them, I mean decades, long time, last year. Nice.
It really is a classic movie, now, you know what I mean? Like when you look at the way it shot, the film stock, the sound, all of that stuff, it really is a classic movie. Like it looks like more like Lawrence of Arabia than it does.
Than it does the movies that are out now.
When it gets to Temple of Doom and everything like that, somehow it switches over and it's digital and all of that stuff and we can go on with Last Crusade, but Raiders of the Lost Dark and my from what I can imagine, is the last film that I watched where I was like, wow, I can I can honestly tell there was a difference. There was a split. This is where this is the last time George Lucas, in my opinion, he split this was it no more film, We're gonna move towards digital. And you can see the progression in in uh from that moment on it was. It's really interesting, like it even the sound, the way the the the punches, everything, it just sounds like, uh, did you do you guys remember Annie?
The movie Annie?
Yeah? Did you ever watch and Yeah?
With pun job pun jab and all that stuff. Do you remember when they went to the movies? Let's go to the movie and they're watching the movie and how old.
That movie felt? Yes, that's what that was raised at a loss start, that's what it feels.
Like now you want to revisit it.
It's pretty good. It's really when you're seen alone, Oh my gosh, just everything.
Don't I tell you guys to watch Strange Darlings that I mentioned that I don't recall my darlings. It's a movie that's out that I really highly recommend. You can get it on your your streaming services. But it's I really really recommend that I did watch something that you recommended. Finally ahead, what was it, Danel? It was chimp crazy amazing, Right, You're welcome. You were not kidding at all. It was that JINX level reveal at the end of episode two. Yeah, spoilers, Danel, No spoilers. I was reeling, reeling because I was. I was, you know, you're watching it and you're thinking, no, way does certain thing happen. And even though I was kind of way a certain thing happened, even though I was kind of expecting it, the way that it reveals itself is so mind boggling.
I was.
I was sitting up in my seat, I was leaning forward. I was like yelling at the TV. That was such a good watch.
That's good.
I want to talk about something else I watched that. Donald will appreciate because I don't usually watch animated movies. I don't have children.
I wanted you to watch something else, but I appreciate I do appreciate you watching this.
I watched this movie and it was so amazing. If you have kids, especially watch this, but even if you don't, The Wild Robot. Yeah, so dude, that must be. That's one of the best movies of the year.
Wow, dude, my kids and my wife watched that shit. I passed out in the middle of it.
I liked it.
You didn't go back and finish it.
I got the gist. But I'm crying with them in the end. All right, I'm crying with them in the end. All right, let's just put it down.
Let's this way.
You fell asleep, woke up, and then still cry and still Yeah.
That's funny, yo, But for real, man, that movie is that from what I saw and the way my kids responded to it, Like, my son really responded to it.
He turned to my wife and was like.
Mom, I know sometimes I don't act like I don't appreciate you. I know I sometimes act like that, but I really do appreciate everything you do.
From men, God, that's so sweet.
I was like, I fucking love this movie. Yeah, this is the best movie ever. My wife never felt more appreciated ever like it.
But it's beautiful.
It is beautiful, man, keep it one hund.
It's beautiful, and you know, my mom, as you guys know because she came on the podcast, is an adoption specialist who was a psychologist specializing in adoption and birth mothers her whole career. And I had this just realization while I was watching it. It's also just it's such a beautiful adoption story. If you have adopted kids, and I mean all children will appreciate it, but if you happen to have adoption in your life, it really is about this robot adopting this baby bird and learning how to parent. I mean, I don't want to ruin anything. It's just so moving to me. I clutched my pearls for most of it.
It's a good movie. A good movie.
Okay, I want to see a Nora that's the one.
Yeah, dude, I want you to watch Running Scared. Man, I think.
We should remake Running Scared. I have never seen Running Scared.
It's so good, and not the one with Paul Walker.
I feel like where every a lot of the young audience is gonna go for.
Oh is that did Paul Walker remake the movie?
No, there was a movie called similarly.
Okay, similarly, we're talking about the one with Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal this movie.
I'm telling you, just give it a one.
Did you watch it? I said, caseld me up, Casey told me you were rewatching it.
It still holds up, you know what I mean. It's like the jokes are the jokes are of the time, obviously. But dude, man, it's Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines and Jimmy.
Jimmy SMI what yeah, bad guy right, yeah?
Man, and freaking Joey Pants is in it. Like, dude, it's a good movie.
We could still have Jimmy young Joey Pants too. We can have Jimmy Smith's come back and be the bad guy again.
Amazing.
Yeah, man, but that would be that would be pretty cool. But I mean, I'm not I'm not going to ruin this by saying this, but he dies in the end.
Oh spoilers, Donald, that's not.
A first the nineties. It's an eighties movie.
Man.
They all all the bad guys die in the Internet.
Ship, which he said it in Chicago, Donald, keep it the same city.
So here's the thing. I'm not from Chicago.
I couldn't necessarily portray the Chicago cop as well as to take it to someone from Chicago.
I would want to do it in New York.
But you know, hey, I mean I was just in New York at a police station.
I didn't get arrested. I lost my wallet.
It was about you know, what's the dance movie with Gregory Hines and Barishnakough. Why don't we remake that White Knights. Let's remake White Knights?
Say you say?
Say it together? Say it for all the loved White Knights when I was a kid, which is weird because it's by no means a kid's movie.
And but it's about breaking down the walls between America and Russia, like they.
I know, swap swap. Do you remember? Do you all?
Have you seen this movie Defector?
We have it?
Watch it isn't this It's amazing. And it's about a Russian ballet dancer who wants to defect from Russia and Gregory Hines, who plays an insane tap dancer.
I forget it, like a dancer in Russia. He defected to Russia.
Why did he even defect to Russia?
Yes?
Why did he go to Russia?
I don't know. That's the movie, man, Like that's what I remember it as.
When plane makes an allergency landing in Siberia, ballet dancer Nikolay is recognized as a defector and brought into custody, so he doesn't defect, but he's recognized as a defector after an emergency landing.
Oh I see, but then there is a big tap scene, isn't it dond But the Phil Collins song? Was that an original Phil Collins song from the movie say.
You He's not Phil Collins? Brought up? It was Lionel Ritchie line.
Now isn't there a full Colin song in the movie too?
No, you're thinking of, You're thinking of against all odds. And take a look at me.
Now, that's such a bop.
Because there's just an empty place space. You're coming back to me. It's against it's a chance I take.
That's a bop. Take a look at me now. My doctor scared the ship out of me this morning. I didn't like it. I went and had this body scan. Donald, you would like this. As someone who's in a hypochondriac You go in this MRI machine and they search your entire body for any tumors. And I just did it because like you told me to do it. And I think when you leave, they're like Okay, it's going to be two weeks, you'll hear. So this morning I get a text it's like, the doctor would like to discuss your m Ariah results with you. And then and then the text was like, how's the seventh how's like the seventeenth of November? It's the seventh today. I'm like, what you're telling me that he got the results instantaneously, he wants to discuss them in person, but he wants to wait till this for ten days.
Mm hmmm.
So I called that motherfucker up real quick.
That's hold up. That's usually a good sign. No, hold up, that's good.
Why what do we have to talk about in person? Do I have cancer or not?
If you did, he would want to talk to you right away to get you on into of course.
But like, why are we? Why are we talking about anything? Why are we talking about anything? And why are we waiting ten days?
Shoot me?
And I can't exactly what. I don't know either, so let's go. I texted him. I was like, what the fuck?
What are you doing?
You're gonna ruin my whole day. I'm too neurotic for this.
What do you saying?
He goes, it's it's standard procedure when you have an MRI, you discuss it. I go, well, now you got me scared. He goes, oh, no, everything's fine. You worry about Like, what the fuck did you text me that for. I don't need to come out.
And lead with that. Everything's fine.
I just want to go over. I'm not coming in.
I'm not coming in in ten days to look at nothing.
I'm busy.
Oh my gosh. But for a solid twenty minutes, I was like, I'm dying. I'm dying. Start giving away shit, you start giving away, start giving away clothes. Donald can have these sucks.
I want the money I've left you no money.
My mom gets all my money.
There it is.
I'm taking my mom to the baby, to baby gallap. I guess you're not coming Donald, you know what? Like once again Donald and Casey have bailed on something we were going to do together.
Here is the thing, bro, keeping it one hundred with you.
I respect the gala and I'm really down to go, but it is on a weekend. I do have time to myself on these days, and I don't want to spend it.
I actually understand it. It's usually Donald, I'm like, get out but lately I've been creating so much alone time.
Fine. Fine.
The point is that once a year there's this very big gala in LA and it's all for impoverished children, and it's a big deal and we often go. Donald Casey and I have gone. I've taken my mom a few times. Has been a few years since I've taken my mom, but I'm taking her this year. And Donald and Casey and I had all discussed going.
Here's the thing. I want to sit on the table with you, though. Bro.
It is a big fundraiser and it's a great fundraiser, and it does things like gives gives diapers to to This is the one of the most important things that parents need, young parents need.
It gives diapers to children.
It gives a lot of money for a great cause. And you also run into people you have seen in a while. And I was excited, and Donald and Casey had said they were going, and I invited my mom and she's she went and got a beautiful gown and it's black tigh. And then I check in with Casey and Donald.
You are a fucking asshole. Fuck you dude, don't even try this.
Don't even what is false. What have I said false thus far?
It's you're just misleading. It's not false. You're saying everything is true, but you are misleading. Pressure.
I haven't any pressure. Hold on pressure to go to a charity event.
You were like, Yo, hold on, this shit costs money. Hold on it is a charity event.
Yeah, yeah, you can afford it. You donate to a charity, you can afford a ticket. That's why you give charity.
Pear pressure again.
So then I check in with and Donald, and Casey's like, oh, we ain't going no more. And I'm like what we never got a.
Sitter and and I if we ain't gonna be able to sit next to you, We're just not don't do it. I never did get a gown. I don't have to get hair and make up. Please, no more Star Wars things on the walls.
Oh man, you do her dirty.
Well, I guess y'all ain't going, But I'm taking my mom. My mom's so cute. My mom this morning texted me. She she I set up with a stylist and everything, and she's so cute. She's she's like family dressed, and she's sent me all these cute pictures of her in her dress and I'm just gonna be so sweet. It's Saturday night. Yeah. Anyway, Donald, I'm sorry that you don't like giving to a good cause. But to each their own.
That's some bullshit, bro, I do like giving too a good cause. I just I'm gonna be honest with you.
Man. Look, you know me. You don't like to know how I am.
Youse, I got it.
It's just what it is.
There's no judgment. Some people don't like to leave the house.
I like to leave the house, but I like to leave the house and do Look. Man, the last time I went, we had such a good time. But we sat together, we drank together, we laughed together. I don't want to sit at a table with people I don't know. I don't want to freaking I mean, it just sounds like an asshole thing to say. But like, yo, what if I get sat at a table with an asshole and that's gonna suck and it can happen, and so you know.
Well, I think at these type of things, you're not like stuck at your table. You're mingling, you're talking to friends. You know so many people.
No, there's a cop, there's a meal that's served all types says ship man, I want to sit with you.
I want to go with you.
I want to be with you, guys.
I want to be with you guys.
Do you know the movie, Danie. Let's see if Daniel knows the movie.
It has no clue.
I want to be with you guys. The first thing that came to mind was Goonies. But I think I'm wrong.
It's close, No, it has it has not one person.
And Goonies is in that movie.
Well, it's not cast close, it's Era close. I don't know what I want to be with Candles. It's sixteen Candles. Oh, I love that movie. It's a scene at the prom and there's a nerdy kid and his parents are forcing him to go to the prom and they push him into the gym and they close the doors and he goes. But I want to be with you, guys.
I want to say, I want to be with you guys.
That's funny, all right, Donald. So I'll let the charity know that you're not charitable.
It's not that I'm not charitable. I'll totally give money to a charity.
To the charity, Oh, really, do you plan to give money to the charity?
Not really, but I will put me on the spot ship if that's what it takes.
To fucking.
God, You're hilarious.
Hilarious, This whole court's hilarious.
My mom and I will will represent for for the fase On family.
You guys won't dance like we dance when we're at that thing.
No, we're probably not going to dance. I believe they're honoring Charlie's throne. Oh we should go.
That's a buddy, we should go.
Yeah, that's a shame. You could still go.
I don't know. I know we text her, let me text.
I just don't understand why. You know, there's so many things that get promised and then not fulfilled upon.
Did we go to Vegas?
Yeah, because Casey thought you did.
We have a good time. Did we have a good time in Vegas? Do you want to discuss Do you want to discuss what you guys said about me last week?
Do you want to Can we talk about can we talk about how you got in your feelings?
We could totally discuss.
We missed the weeks, so we haven't been able to talk about that. Oh my god, this is the funniest thing in the world. So I'm talking.
I don't know if it's funny, but I do want to discuss it.
Casey. I was facetiming Casey and she said that Donald got in his feelings about something that happened on the podcast. And I'm like, what could possibly have put Donald in his feelings? And she said that when you said that no one would subscribe to his only fans?
No, because first it started off as no woman would subscribe, No woman, no young woman.
Because I don't think of women.
And then you said and then you said no gay man. No, No, you said yes, you guys.
Said say that.
I said, I said, gay man.
Would love your Who was a guest that day?
It was Michael Yury, don't remember Michael Urry.
Yeah, Michael Yury, a gay man said that no gay man would ever.
No, I think you may kid subscribe.
That's not what I sound. Cut to the tape right here, all I know.
Cut to it, Okay, cut to the section right here. Daniel. Yeah, I don't think you're gonna make that much. I think it's a niche mark.
You dude, Fuck you, dude. My ass is fucking beautiful. And I'm sure so it's beautiful.
I'm sure there's a lot of gay men that would be intrigued.
And straight women.
I don't know how many straight women want to see your balls for money, but maybe I can, Dannel, what are your thoughts. It's certainly possible, I mean.
Survey says, Survey says, Dan. How much money do you drin get women out there?
I'm sure there's plenty of people who would want to see Donald's balls.
Yeah.
No, he's saying there's no women that want to see I'm.
Sure some women or people.
I'm sure no, no, no, he said, no women.
I'm sureing for ten bucks, there's women who'd be like, I'm curious.
He said. He said, only gay men would want to see my balls.
I'm sure there are women as well.
Yeah.
But Daniel, do you think the biggest percentage of the of the pie chart be would be gay men? I think the biggest patriot would be a straight Scrubs fans man.
I mean, I mean I think the curiosity would probably get them. Yeah, yeah, absolutely absolutely.
And you know, like like mid forties women who love clueless.
Probably thank you, thank you, thank you. Yes, I don't know about gay men. I'm not sure. If I don't know, what are you talking about? I wouldn't get gay. Man, if you listen, if you're not into this, you don't, you don't deserve it anyway. Then how about that. If y'all ain't into this, then you don't deserve it. That's universal. That's for everybody out there.
I'll tell the games.
I'll let them know.
All right now that we're back, that we've watched that. I want to clarify something I didn't mean to get you and your feelings about no one subscribing to your only fan.
You said, no one would want to freaking subscribe.
No, here's what I mentioned, my only fan. Here's because and dude, but too well, Joelle, he wasn't kidding. Casey was like yo, yo. Donald got in his feelings about what you said that no one would watch his only.
He said, I still have sexual powers, and I want my best friend to acknowledge it.
No, listen, Donald, I want you to know I would subscribe. I would watch the fun.
That's that's not what I'm asking for, all right, that's not and I'm.
Sure listen, I don't know what I don't know, Joelle. Do you think Let's ask Joelle a question, Joelle, do you think straight women are subscribing to sexy men's only fans? Is that something that straight women do.
I think in a far lower percentage ry than straight or gay men.
Right.
I can't.
None of my friends to me that they subscribe to OnlyFans. But I'm sure at least I.
Was saying to you, Donald, is what I was saying to you, Donald, is I think that when I think of OnlyFans, it's men watching women. I imagine gay men watching men. I don't. I don't think of it as a site, And I could be totally wrong. Where straight women are going on to look at men beating off or showing their balls or whatever.
But would they go to a site to watch a straight man do stop motion animation?
No? Absolutely not, absolutely not.
I don't want you to disagree, homeboy, but I don't disagree, homeboy.
I just don't always want you to know that I would watch.
Your own doing stop motion animation. Absolutely, somebody's watching.
I think I go back to what Michael. I think nobody what Michael Uri said, and the bulk of the subscribers would be curious Scrubs fans.
No, that was what Daniel said.
Oh, yeah, Daniel said that. Yeah, straight Scrubs fans. I don't want you. I don't want you to be in your feelings about it.
I would love anymore.
Are you guys are just assholes and don't know anything about anything.
Casey said that. I was like, oh, Ship, what did I say? And she was like, he's all upset in his feelings that y'all wouldn't watch his only fans.
That's not that you wouldn't watch my only fantas that you think that?
No one, Well, I think you've got to watch thinking that. What I was saying was that women don't find you attracted with.
You and then and then the gay man said, and gay men don't find you attractive either.
No, no, no, I don't think that's what happened.
Bagir Energy Donald and I'm sure yeah, Donald.
Bear energy to come on and the Straight Scrubs fans. If you're gay and you would like to watch Donald's only fans, let us let us know, let us.
Send send the emails to Joel.
Yes, actually, actually, why don't we have If you're a gay person, who would who would subscribe to Donald Faison, we'd love to have you on the show as a guest. And Joelle, what's the email to have them, come on, scrubs rubs right? Wait, can I get a guess? Absolutely, it's not gonna be a We don't want to do a whole hour with you. We would just like to if you could send us a quick, thirty second video letting us know what you would like to see on Donald's only words with words, use your words, don't be shy, and don't and don't censor yourself, Like, really, you would like a guest who really can articulate what they'd like to see.
Your clothes listen, don't go.
Yes, yes, YouTube appropiate, but you can don't censor yourself. If you're like, I want to see Donald fist himself whatever it is, let us know.
I don't know.
I was not prepared.
I know that my moms are long enough to do.
You don't know if you could fist yourself. You could fist yourself if.
The money is right, If the money is right. I don't know if you.
Could build the whole Star Wars universe in your garage, but it would be my fist, right fist, Yeah, it's your fist. It's not the guest fist unless that's what the guest wants.
What have we got Brett in.
Here is Brett here? Yeah, all right, everybody, we have Brett Goldstein on the program. He is the hottest star of the moment. We're very lucky to have him. He's a wonderful mention of a human being. Donald count Sen.
I've got many questions. Seven eight stories.
I'm not sure we made about a bunch of docs and nurses.
I said, he's a story natural, so YadA around here, yeada round here.
But oh under his applause, Daniel, ladies and gentlemen, the Legen and Jerry Gret Goldstein.
We did it big, you guys, we did it.
Listen.
I think we got a fucking real a listener.
We got a big star.
Were just got to cut right to it. No offense, no, let's get into it.
Listen.
Calm down.
I noticed that you've been lifting weights.
Calm down, Okay, Donald's very excited you're here, Brett, Brett. That's These are our our support team, our producer Joe Well, our engineer Daniel Hey.
Big big fan of of your work. I'm a big fan of the podcast. I've been listening since the beginning. Honored to do this. It's so nice and we've done.
It It's so nice to have you on the show because we've been wanting to have you. We have so many things to talk to you about. We don't even know where to begin because we have so many questions for you.
But can we talk listen, I want to start.
What do you want to talk about?
You can talk about my experience working We've donal because it was one of my it was like my most exciting first sort of time in Hollywood where I was like, holy ship. I did this pilot with this how all of this began as I did this pilot with Bill Lawrence and it was called space.
Based out Yeah out, And I remember and it was about going to Mars, about going to Mars.
Oh my god, Oh my god, Bill Lawrence. Everybody crashing the podcast behind bred Goldstein really heard he can't hear anything because he doesn't have he's doing finger countdown on his fingers.
Phil, do we do we even have an opening?
Like a they're being so sorry. I realized, Okay, they're very excited to see it, but they able to hear me scream five.
Yeah, you were able to hear that you're doing it whenever I want.
For the rest of the interview, they said Brett.
Brett work in five up off, turn it off? Thank you, all right, get him out of there, get him out of there, Brett, all right, all right, so you guys, thank you. Get him out of there. Breath. I I don't want this. I don't want the audience to think that Brett and Bill live together. Brett is currently writing his show Shrinking with Bill, and they work in the same office.
Okay, but we also do live together. So I so I get Hi. I'm a big Scrubs fan. I got hired to do this pilot and then Bill says, oh, we're going to bring in Donald and I was like, what the fuck?
Yeah, I remember, I remember making that pilot. I remember you being.
The sweetest person on the planet. You hugged a lot. I remember you hugging me. Hug he is Brett is a Brett is a great hugger.
Because he's very muscular. So when you hug him, you get a lot of muscles in your hug.
I squeeze.
I like to see, were you always musk Were you always a fit person? I don't mean in the British sense, in the American sense? You were you always a muscular fellow? Into ship into being in shape.
I always did. I always did push ups like us in prison.
Mm hm, nice.
Let's go back. I want to go back to when I met you, I Bred Goldstein. I met you on a show called Ted Lasso. I was directing the second episode of the series.
He's under s applause down.
Yeah, it was called Biscuits. It was the one about the biscuits. And I thought, I think our audience would love to know this unique story about how you got cast, because, for those of you who don't know, Brett was hired by Bill because they had this relationship you just mentioned as a writer on Ted last. So Bill really thought Brett was very talented as a writer, and he wanted obviously some English perspective on the story. So Brett, tell us, how tell the audience how that happened? Because you were not in any way up for the part of Roy Kent, and you did something that I think is really courageous and ballsy and an inspiration to other creative people out there.
What happened was we were writing the show and I sort of secretly thought about episode five, randomisode five. I was like, oh, I think I know Roy Kent. I know what I really felt a cooling, like I think I'm meant to be Roy Kent, but I also know no one's thinking of me for this, and it is an embarrassing thing to ask in the writer's room, and if I ask to even audition, it's going to make everyone uncomfortable. Whatever's going to feel embarrassed and awkward because also no one's thinking of me in this way. So when we finished the writers room, I did a self tape. I filmed five scenes and I was flying back to England and I emailed Bill and I said, look, I secretly think I could be Roy Kent, but I know this is really awkward. Here's a tape. If it's shit, pretend you never got it. I will never ask you about it. This is between us. But if it's good here at Peguy. And when I landed in London, I had an email from Bill saying this.
Is fucking brilliant and oh my god. It was very exciting, very but that was so that was so vulnerable and ballsy of you, because you know it could have gone the other way where he was like, oh great, and then you then somebody else gets the part and you're there and you feel like you put yourself out there, but it didn't pay off.
Well, well, it was like, what's the worst case. The worst cause scenario is the worst guy scenario because I thought it for it is that he feels so uncomfortable that if there's a season two I don't get asked back to write on it because he doesn't want to ever see me again. Yeah, that was the worst case. But then on the other hand, I always think of these things, well, have you got to lose? It doesn't matter, nothing matters. It may as well, you know what I mean.
But that attitude, which I think is an inspiration to people out there listening, whether they're going to make that courageous choice or not, changed your entire life. I mean, the decision of you to really send on that email which was ballsy and which was vulnerable, and which was courageous and to chutzpah changed your entire life, which I just think is so inspirational on the people.
I mean, you don't know, you didn't. I didn't know that. Like I said, that's the other thing. Is the reality, true, true, true reality. I've made loads of stuff, I've made this pilot, We've done it honestly, honestly, the pilot that me and did was brilliant, Like I thought that was going to be Remember when we like it was.
We got close. Yeah, we got so close. It was on the bubble of it looked like it was going to go.
I mean Rubin.
Directed it too, you know it was. And we had Rubin directing, bill writing, and then the cast was like a bunch of young comedian type uh uh sketch so funny like some of yes, some of the guys were influencers and stuff, and we're doing things online and stuff like that.
Like it was really ahead of its time, and I thought it was going to go. Man, it was like scrubs and space to keep it one hundred with you, scrubs.
And nastas and scrubs in a rocket factory. And when we remember when on that last day we filmed over a week and on the last day, I remember side the city because I was like, I guess.
This is it.
Boys definitely shook my hand and he said see you in August because we're going to be making this thing. And I went back to England, you know, pack it up my house. I guess I'm moving to Hollywood. Baby.
Yeah, I never know, You never know.
So my point is when I did the boy Ken thing, there wasn't a part of me if if you put all the pressure on of like this is the life change. It was like by that stage, I didn't think anything was going to happen, as in I thought would make a good show and no one would see it. Well you know what I mean, Like I didn't expect.
I just think it's good to have the balls and the courage to try. I wrote, I don't know, you don't know this story, Brett, but the audience I've told this story, but I'll tell it quickly. I wrote a first season of Scrubs. I wrote a spec script for scrub. Do you know the story? You know the story.
It's one of my favorite stories.
I'll tell it quickly for audience that doesn't know the story. But I had such balls, I had such courage. I had such I did such I don't know.
You were a naive man, but.
I was also no but I was very driven. I didn't pay off. I didn't pay off that day, but it would pay off in other ways throughout the course of my career. But I wrote a whole episode of Scrubs, and I had the balls to give it to Bill and go, I would really like to write an episode of the show.
Mind you.
This is season one and.
So three bro. Yes, it was. It was pretty early. It was pretty No, you know what it couldn't been.
It wasn't.
It wasn't but uh. I gave it to Bill and he this is non exaggeration. It's gonna sound like the cartoon movie version of this.
A p A.
I gave it to Bill, and a PA brought it to me the next morning and said, hey, I found this on the in the parking lot and it's got your name on it, and it had a tire track over the title page of the of the screen and Bill Bill Bill claims that he must have left it on the rumor's car because he drove over it.
I think he was making a point. I think Bill loves you so much. I think Bill put the tire mark over it. No, he did, and freaking I mean.
He read it. He ultimately.
I think he read it and said, wow, really cool. This kid's got fucking huge balls. I got to teach him a lesson.
I don't think I don't think he purposely drove over it. I think he It shows how he felt about it. Like, oh, this fucking kid, and then forgot it on his roof. But he did ultimately read it and he gave me notes on it, so and then, and you know, it did lay some foundation for what was to come, but he wasn't ready to take me seriously at that point as a writer.
I mean, some of the best stories are when people take control of their destiny and take a leap, you know.
I think that's.
Yes, that's what I'm trying to highlight about Brett Goldstein.
I say that ship, then, man, your dad around it, like, yo, you got balls, Brett, that's the dopest ship we've heard man to take.
To take a page out of out of Zach's book, out of all of the really dope creators, you did something that we all admire, and that is you took control of your destiny and fucking made something happens.
Thank you very much, Thank you.
And I just think that's I think that's an inspiration. Now, how did Jason? You know, Jason was your another co creator and and you obviously you dipped your toe in the water with Bill. How did Jason? I mean obviously he loved it too, or he wouldn't have cast you but how did they go with Jason?
Oh?
Well, I believe because I wasn't there then because I was backing on this, so I believe. Then Bill took it to Jason, and then Jason liked it, and then they showed all the writers in the writer's room. They went are we wrong?
Is this good?
And then I had to and then got said to Apple and the thing that was the truth is that I forget this bit. Is that actually the self tape I've done, You know, if you like, My managers have like a self tape room in their office. So I've just gone to their office and they will have a whoever's like an intern, they will have an intern read in with you. But the intern that they had was this Swedish guy. So I was doing my scenes with Keeley the off camera was a Swedish man doing so Apple eventually asked, just in case, could you do it with a woman, just to see this sounds right? So I had to redo it.
I always think that's important to tell actors that I know it's not always possible, but try and try and read with someone who's at least a decent actor or an ideally the right sex.
Don't do it with your.
Wife though, well, really, isn't your wife now?
My wife tries to support me, and all I get is, you're gonna do it like that.
Oh, that's your unique situation. I just think it's when when I when I as a director, when I watch tapes and the person off camera is like, but there's a fire in the house and we need to get out as soon as possible. It's very distracting, and you're like, you know, sometimes you can't avoid it because that's all you got.
But but sometimes, you know, when you watch celtices, you know when the person off camera wants apart, when they're really when they're like you can hear them cry really, and you're like, we know what you do. I was ahead, No, I was just making observation as a fan of the podcast. I've never seen it, and I just Joel, do you do you look so lovingly at the screen at all times?
Yeah, Joel's our supports system. She's like a big hug. She just supports us so comfortable, and then she only she only pipes in when we've said something inappropriate that we need.
That's not true, that's not true.
You really you really look like you you really if I may say, you really like you love these guys.
We love Joel. We couldn't make the show without her. Bro she makes the whole thing run.
Look, Daniel and Joel when we first started this show, they were not supposed to be on the show. They were just supposed to be producers. And we just had so much fun talking to them. And also it was during COVID and everything like that, so it like kind of forced us all to really express what we were going through and you know, what what our lives were like at that moment, and it just made for good podcasts.
I can't see the podcast without them. Now.
Well, we just enjoy talking to them so much, and we're a family here, so we we love having them be a part of it. Even though Daniel's probably off camera playing a video game right now. They played they played the Twitch Yeah, Zach.
You Then Zach then directed to Lasso and I was a very big fan of Scrubs and I was really nervous of meeting Zach as I was when I met you Donald and Zach. I didn't realize it was very very charming. It's very tall and very charming and very charismatic, like in real life he's like you sort of, he's very impressive, he's about very charming, and we're in the middle of nowhere in England in this sort of quite it's not like very nice where we filmed Richmond, and it was like here comes Hollywood talking and we were all all of us, the whole cast, were quite like, we're really self conscious because we were doing read through it's like read through episodes and suddenly there's fucking Zach Braff from Scrubs and Garden State and everyone, all of the cast kept nudging each other like's you is it? And how are we going to work with this guy?
It was that's very it's very sweet of you say. But I I met this cat asked who you know became global sensations.
About to say, did you know when you met this cast like this get any monster?
I really didn't. I thought, listen, you have to understand that other than Jason, no one was a household name. And I thought that it was very funny. I thought they were all super talented. I thought the show was good. I I just didn't have any any guests at the audience for it. I thought, you know, people who love soccer will love this Obviously, Jason's hilarious and he's got a huge fan base. But and I was really proud of the way that episode came out. I thought it was really special and and and and it had the Bill Lawrence special, which is you're laughing and then it breaks your heart a little. But I would never have guessed that ted Lassa would become the global sensation that it became.
But when you look at it now, it really was not only to jump off for all of the cast members, like everybody's gone on to do great things and stuff, but it's also like Ryan Reynolds and his partner, they kind of owe you guys a fucking a hat or something, man, because like they took the they took the sensation, the global sensation that Ted last one. People who had never watched soccer in their or sorry, football in their life were all of a sudden watching We're watching it and trying to understand it because they loved the characters on ted Lasso and Ryan and his partner. They took that momentum and that motherfucker is rich.
He is a wealthy motherfucker now because of it.
I don't think that's I don't think I don't think it's the only thing that's made him very ready.
But that thing has. He was doing fine without it, sure, I'm sure, but that thing has.
So Brett so tell us about like, so we're shooting this little thing, and he's right, it's you know, the sound stages aren't fancy. It's a it's a bit of a there was nothing glamorous about the shoot.
I also episode two you because Zach invented a camera. I don't know if this is boring, but part of the way the ted lights it looks is defined by Zach Braff because O thank you. It was the episode two is the first time you see a football scene. And we were told suddenly on the day, oh, you're not allowed to put any equipment on the pitch. And it was like, oh shit. So Zach built a rig with some of the guys that's these giants with the.
Grip, with the key grip and and the DP. We had to come up with a unique way to shoot the soccer because they they the field is so special and that the pitch as they call it. That the greensmen were like, you're not putting any gear on this? What the hell you think? And and soccer moved so fast that you couldn't have some of the traditional ways we would have shot something, and normally here in the stage probably we'd use an electric card of some kind or something. Anyway, so we came up with this rig that had these big tires and it was a remote head so the DP could operate it from the side, and it was really fun and it was like a unique assignment for this particular show, and then it became one of the main tools they used to shoot the.
Same thing season three. Yeah, and it's literally a guy like with a sort of what do you call it? Wheelbarrow?
Well, what's cool is the run they run. It became I can see a picture of it because I haven't saved in my favorites because it's a it's a favorite. But they the grips would then put on soccer cleats and run with it so that they because obviously that was allowed, and then it would enable it would enable us to get amazing shots and was completely remote. The head of the camera was completely remote controlled from the from the side. You invented this bro Well, we have a key grip. I don't want to take full credit with the hold on. I'm trying to get focus for y'all.
Hold on, you are, yeah, man, you are a part of u uh cinematic history.
Well, if there's a special award, I'll take it.
That's pretty dope this, especially if it's was used after you left.
Oh yeah, they used it the whole run of the show.
Interesting, do they still use it on other shows?
Well, if anyone is shooting on a pitch in England and needs our help, please contact the show and we'll help you build.
Did they use it on like Game Time or whatever? That ship was winning time or.
I wasn't on a football field.
Ye, let's take a break.
We'll be right back after these fine words, all right, Brett, So what I want to talk about is, so you shoot season one and you feel good about it, then when does it start to This is during COVID right when did When did it did? It wasn't an instant hit? Am I Am? I rain?
No, it was a slow it was how did you roll out?
How did you start to feel that it was catching on?
It was sort of like I've talked about this before, But the thing I think is interesting about ted LASSA and its success is that I don't think there is anything to be learned from it, as in I don't think you can. You know how Hollywood always tries to repeat They were like, well Ted Lasser works and we should do that. But it's like I think it's kind of a miracle, like as in it it didn't have huge marketing behind it. I don't think it didn't have It was on a new stream. Apple TV was very new, so it wasn't like everyone had it and it was just everywhere. It was like you had to make an effort to find it, and it came out and it just slowly. But it was a genuine word of mouth hit, which is rare. It wasn't you know, pushed by It was people who made that a hit, and there's no nothing you can replicate about that. It just happened to touch people at the right time. And people say, maybe it was because of COVID and maybe at the time the political landscape, all the reasons you can think of, but there were so many other shows that exist at that time, and it's just out of a you know, like.
I think it was. I looked at it as a huge hit when it started.
I felt like it launched Apple TV kind of also like didn't it help Apple TV all of a sudden because.
By far ever still like.
I remember, I remember, I remember somebody saying, you watching Ted Last, So I was like, you know, my my my old boss he created the show with and they were like, well, have you watched it? I was like, I haven't watched it. I don't watch much TV. And they were like, yo, you should watch it. And then I remember being so stuck on that fucking show, like I watched every episode from season one to season three. That's shit, like it was. It was one of those things. And the great thing was that I knew you also, and it was like, wow, look at.
Fucking Brent dude.
This dude was fucking flying back to fucking England, wherever the fuck you, wherever you live, you were flying back like you know, well this is it, Well i'll.
See you soon.
And I didn't see you for years, and all of a sudden, he's on Ted Last Morning.
It's a fucking hit, and he's good on it too, and not only not only is it a hit, he's fucking good.
And then all of a sudden, that fucking you know, you know, things start happening when you're good, things start happening people start talking when you're good, and it was just so good to see.
Well, and not only I felt like it was a hug, you know, everyone was so down and COVID was so horrible, and it just felt wholesome, and it felt like maybe the world would not have been so open to something so wholesome and sentimental if it weren't for those conditions. Who knows, but I do feel like I do feel like the culture around the earth was ready for what ted Lasso was serving.
Yeah, And there's something I think. What's funny about ted Lasso, and I think about it is that people feel about it like it's a really wholesome show and that it's sort of kind and it's a warm hug and all these things. And what's interesting about it is it's also a show that has so much wearing in it. It's got so much darkness in it. It's got severe mental health problems in it, Like it's there's actually for a show that I think people watch with their families and people talk about it like it's a family show, and I think it is. But what's unusual about it is that I say fuck every other word, and there's a cunny lingers scene, and there's you.
Know, I think people get over that though, because of because of the overall, because it feels it just feels like it feels like Rudy every week.
You know, that's nice.
I remember crying. You were so good in that scene. I think it's the end of season one when you're in the locker room and Keely comes in and you're like, don't come in here. I just thought that your performance was so wonderful, and I remember I remember crying and being like, this motherfucker got me.
You were very nice, well coming, saying nice things about you instead.
No, no, no, no, no no, Brad, you came on this podcast. Come on you. We're not on your show, You're on ours.
This is how it works, Bratt.
You won the Emmy.
You won the Emmy for season one? Did you not?
I did?
Yeah?
And did you win the Emmy for season two?
I did?
And did you? And Tony shalout that motherfucker?
And did you win the Emmy for season three?
I did? Know?
Okay, Well, two in a row is pretty damn good.
So you didn't, Tony Shalu?
Where'd your camera go? Donald?
I'm trying to fix it now, Hold on he's mad about.
Yeah, wh two Emmys in a row is a pretty big deal and you, especially when you consider all the extreme talent that you're up against, it's it's quite a quite a statement about you.
Three would have been better.
But I think if you do three then people start to hate you. It's probably for the best.
Three they're start no doubt and then you can't be Wait, but then you can't be Hercules if you get three.
Yeah, exactly, can you talk about before we go to before we go to Hercules, Let's just finish the ted last thing out because I'm sure, I'm I'm pretty confident that I know what you're going to say, but I'm sure people listening will want to know. There's rumors of season four? Is anything? Is there anything you can say? Well, you can you at least say that you'll be a part of that or is there absolutely nothing you can say?
I can't say anything. I've had the same room as you've had, I read the same press series.
Okay, I knew you were gonna be I knew you're gonna be cryptic, but I had to ask for the fans because I'm a good host.
Brett, but he's not.
Gonna be cryptic about Hercules.
I have a feeling he'll be cryptic about Hercules as well, Brett, for those for those people who care about Hercules, will you give them some sentences about Hercules. Some people care about that, like.
I have nothing to Secret Wars.
It's important Secret Wars. I know you've gotten the call from Figy. I know he called you because Hercules is a big, big, big, big big part of that.
What you can say, Brett is that what you can say is that how good you are keeping a secret? I read that that little I should say. For those people who aren't mega Marvel fans, Brett did a credits scene in which Marvel movie Thunder and thor Love and Thunder where he was gonna play Hercules, and so people like Donald who are very into this are like, when is Hercules coming?
He has to come soon.
It has to be Secret Wars or before, because I mean, sorry, this is a very big important part of the Secret Wars uh.
War.
Like Eddie Murphy in the movie, I'm trying to get real dirty on you.
Know what's Eddie Murphy. Yeah, you look like Figure right now.
You're doing great.
Nothing to report on that case. I'm afraid and kept that.
Well.
You can talk about is how you managed to keep that secret from everyone, including your mom.
I read, Oh yeah, that's true. I have told that story before, but not all.
Of our listeners listen to every interview you do, Bro.
No, no, no, But I just always want to preface it in case people are like, oh, yeah, fucking know this again.
But one thing you have to learn is that, uh, you know, our audience hasn't necessarily heard every bread golds the interview, some of them, some of them have seen them all. I'm sure I'm furious to discover.
This.
How did you How did you keep it in your mom?
I'll tell you what I well, because they I'll tell you how because they make it so scary when when I went to film it, when you God, I probably can't even say.
This man.
Because he signed that n d A.
Bro. I think everybody knows.
But what they what I will say is the Marvel security certainly make it sound like if you speak you will be killed.
Why Kevin Faggy himself, that would be the worst day ever.
Figgy just shows up at your house and he's like, you know why I'm here, and you know what this means?
There's this new show Franchise. Have you seen any of that?
Bro? Yes, I saw the first episode. It's great.
Donald. You know, Donald, you don't watch things. But it's about behind the scenes of the making of a of a superhero movie, and it's from the perspective of the first ad and all the mayhem that goes on behind the scenes. It's pretty funny.
I would like to watch that show Franchise.
It's on Branchise. Can we oh, yeah, yeah, what do you want? Yeah? So basically, so I did this this hecles thing, and I text my mom because sometimes I'll recommend to my mom and dad films. They don't go a lot to cinema, but there's stuff I know they're like, and I'll go, you should see this film is really good. And I text my mom and I go, I know it's not normally your sort of thing, but you should go and see thor Love and Thunder. I saw it. It's really funny. I think you'd find it really funny. And she goes, I don't know if that's for us, and I go, no, trust me, I feel like I feel like this is a good one, and she goes. I watched the trailer and I don't think it's so I go, you know, I love films, like I wouldn't send you something I didn't think you did joy and they go. She goes, o'h fine, So they go and see Thor. She's texting me through the film and she's sort of going, oh, Russell Crows and I go, I go, mom, turn off your phone. You're at the cinema. And then she text me a few more times. This is quite entertaining. I go, yes, well, why are you texting me? Anyway? So I'm in the credits. So it gets to the end, so it's now the end. She texts me, well, that was fun credits and then she goes, oh, because what happens at the very end Russell Crowe appears and then it pans around it it's me and she goes, oh, Russell Crow's back, and I and I'm thinking she's going to fucking miss me. She's looking down at her phone and I and I look at the fucking screen. And then seconds later she wrote, she writes, what, that's amazing.
Thank god she didn't message.
I mean, it's like she's going to look down and I don't even know what you said it to that.
So now I want to pivot to shrinking.
You get let's talk about your directing.
Well, well we can, but I want to talk about this amazing show that what's horrible?
Just do you say nice things make me come to I mean they just making me sweat?
Okay, well that's something you should work on in therapy. But English people don't go to therapy either, right.
Okay, carry on, carry on.
So you create this brilliant show Shrinking with Bill Lawrence and Jason Siegel? How did it come about? How did that? Obviously at this point, we know Bill loves your writing, we know that he wants to work with Jason. How did How did Shrinking get born?
Shrinking happened because Bill and I were talking a lot and hanging out, and he said we should I'd like to do something else with you. And he said have you Is there anything you've been working on? And I told him I had this treatment for a show that was about a therapist, but it was about grief, but it was a much darker version of what shrinking ends up being. And then he said, that's interesting. I have a similar thing, but it's a different tone, and his thing was much lighter and the more we talked about it was like, actually, if you put these two together, the middle ground is shrinking, and that is actually the best version of this show. And so that's sort of what happened. And then we we wanted Jason always because he was just because Jason Seagle is the perfect man for it, because he is he has that thing where you just love him, so he can be a bit of a dick. You can write a character that makes mistakes and does bad things, and you can push it quite far because you're always going to love Jason Seagule, I think. And we got on a zoom with Jason and we pitched him the show. And I had a Muppets poster his movie behind me because I genuinely.
Had that on my will and I genuinely love the Muppets and I genuinely love.
His movie.
Songs. You know, life's happy song when there's someone by your side to sing along. Yeah, I walked down the aisle to that. I've got everything that I need right in front of it, no stopping, nothing, I can't be.
It wasn't next to me, and it was sung by a gospel choir.
Yeah, life happy song, Life, life fishes.
Yes, it is yes, it is.
Someone that had life. Oh man. I used to listen to that ship, like, if you got.
A video that goes I can't believe anything.
I'd like, I bet you I probably do. I bet you if we look, I mean we got.
I was in my backyard and I remember, I remember I was so nervous about my neighbors because there had been some commotion about me having a one hundred person in my backyard and uh. And then the gospel choir showed up and then they had microphones and I was like, roll.
And it's such a everything is great. Literally, well they're playing it. I could tell that the audience was like, what the fuck is this?
It was very sweet, it was very Romantic's so great, all right, So so you''re so he sees your muppet poster and and go on.
And then we and we pitched it to him. And it's funny because he we didn't think it had gone great, because Jason, he was very lovely, but he just sort of went he sort of went, okay, thank you, let me think about it. And we were like okay, and we hung out thinking, oh, that seemed quite sure. And then I think that very day he called and said let's do it, and we're like, oh great, oh fantastic, and yeah, and that was it.
That was it.
Let's take a break.
We'll be right back after these fine words.
So how'd you get Harrison Ford?
Yeah? What was your You had a meeting with Harrison Ford?
Weren't you?
There?
Wasn't he in England?
And you?
Yes, I was in England. I was in England filming Ted Lasso and everyone else was here. And I get a basically, Harrison Ford's agent has read it. We want him, but we never think we're going to get him obviously, so it's sort of like a Harrison Ford type and then the agent goes, this is actually very good, sends it to him. I basically he says, I think. What's happened is the agent says, well, you need to talk to Harrison. And Bill's like, but I'm not. Harrison's in London making Indiana Jans and he Bill says, well, Brett's in London, he can meet Harrison. I get a missed call on my phone. I still have the voicemail and it's and the voicemail goes, Brad, it's Harrison Ford. I'm like, what the fuck. And he goes give me a call, and I'm like, fuck, and I'm thinking if I if I wait five minutes, I'm going to freak myself out and not. So I just immediately called him. Hi, Harison, and I say, how's it going. He goes, yeah, I'm at work and I say what are you working on? He goes of Indiana Jones. I'm like, yeah, yeah, and he says he says, He says, can you meet on Saturday for dinner? And I had a gig on Saturday, stand up gig booked and I said, I'm really sorry, I can't. I have a gig, and he goes, oh, and he seems quite shocked, and we sort of. He says, well, let me go back to you, and he hangs up with a cool Bill and I go, well, he wanted to meet on Saturday, but I've got a gig and Bill goes, you fucking idiot.
Canceled the gig.
It's Harrison Ford. It's Harrison Ford. You have to cancel the gig. I was like, but people have bought it, like twelve people have bought I can't let them down.
And so I.
Text Harrison. I go, is there any chance you're pre on Friday after work, I could come meet you, and he says, come to my house, come to my place at like six forty five to seven thirty or something. So I was like, oh, I've been downgraded, like he must he must, maybe not, maybe's upset.
I don't know.
I've been downgraded to a short window, you know what I mean. So everyone, Jeff, Bill, everyone, Jason like, don't fuck this up. Collect you know, make sure this goes well. It's like so much pressure. Drive to Harson Ford's place, get a lift, and I get out to come. Really know, it's like what the fuck? I don't know what to expect. And I ring the doorbell and fucking you know, hand Solo answers the door like he harrdon Ford answers the door, and he looks amazing and he says hey, and he shakes men and I go in and he sort of walks up these stairs and I follow him up the stairs. He hasn't really said anything yet. And then we walk into his apartment and he goes best script I've ever read?
And I go what?
And he goes best scripts I've ever read? And I see on his table he's got loads of scripts. He's obviously reading lots of things. So I'm like, oh, you poor, I feel bad for it. I'm like, you've got the wrong obviously means something else. And so I look at the scripts and I see the shrinking script and I go, I go shrinking and he goes, yeah, best dialog I've ever read. And I went oh, and I said do you want to do it then? And he went yeah, and I went okay then and he said, is that business done? And I said looks like it and he said, let's eat and then and then we had the whole the whole evening. It's just brilliant and he was so wonderful and so like he really got it. And also, you know what was like, I don't know I've ever told this before. I hope he doesn't mind me saying this because it's sort of heartbreaking and like so lovely is he was dressed a certain way and he said, how do you how do you see the character sort of dressing? And I said, well, honestly, sort of like this, like what you wear.
And he went, yeah, that's why I dressed like this.
It was really amazing.
He was additioning for Yeah, he went on an outfit.
It was I'm gonna nail this. I'm gonna get this. I'm gonna get this. They probably don't think I'm good. I'm gonna get this. I'm gonna get He's such and he really is.
You know, you've wrote with him. He is what he says he is and what you read about, Like if you read Mike Nichols's biography biography, which is amazing, when he talks about working with Arison Ford, Harrison Ford is like, I'm here to service the story. I am an actor in this film. I'm not the star. I'm here to tell him show me that, use me in the best way to tell this story. And he is like that, this is an ensemble show. And as incredible as he is, and he's fucking incredible, he is part of the ensemble. And yeah, and he you know, Zach, this is I find it so like moving, like he loves it. And I also go like I get why he wanted to do it, because he's fucking funny and vulnerable. He gets to do so much in this part that he hasn't been able to show. I think, and I think, and this it's really not me being like, oh, we write such great science. What I mean is like, I think it's an opportunity for him that he has really embraced because he hasn't. He's wanted to do this, He's wanted to show all these signs of himself that he gets to show in this part. And I think people are always like, God, he's so funny. He's so funny in it, and he is so funny, but he's also so vulnerable in it in a way that I don't think we've ever seen before.
And he's just amazing, you know, Yeah, I agree with He's been the tough guy in so many freaking projects and he's you know, and to see him cry, and to see him not only cry, but freaking uncontrollably cry, like, I can't fucking hate this. It's really really as a fan of his, as somebody who's watched him pretty much since I was three years old, it really is refreshing. I've seen every form, every form of him, and to see him like this, I've never seen him like this, and that's that's that's saying something because he's been in everything and he's never been this.
I think he really loves being funny. I see I see that, I see on set that he I see that he's loving making everyone laugh.
Yeah, and uh.
And he said to me that it's it's he loves it's one of his favorite jobs. He just loves the environment of the set.
And he's he's always generous to the writers and he'll always after receiving his shot, he'll come over and thank the writers and like he's he's really good and he's and he's also a generous actor like he because I think he knows, he knows people are into that they're working for. The people very excited to work with him. There was a very nervous like fuck, I've got if they've got just one scene with him, and he'll he'll he'll do something to put them at ease, and he'll say, like this is gonna be great.
You know.
It's just a little gesture to show to them, Yeah, I'm here with you with doing this together.
The biggest obstacle is for the other people, including herself, to get over to get over it the fact that you're sitting with Yeah, you have to sitting with it's your own ship. Yeah, it's your own ship, because if you bring that to the table, you're never going to be able to be good. Whether you're an actor or a writer or director, you have to sort of well, I can only speak for myself, give yourself a little pep talk, like get rid of all that bullshit. You know, he's a regular, he's an actor, just like everyone else is an actor.
And and you know, I think I think they're there to make you look good too.
Elizabeth Banks said it also, you know, she You know everybody when when you're working, everybody wants the scene to be good. Everybody wants what you know, we all say going to do something because we believed in it and we want it to work, you know what I mean. And there's no difference between him and anyone else in that situation. He wants this to be just as good as you want it to be. He wants you to be as good as you want to be. And so you know, yeah, it is a hard thing for you, but it takes a really good actor one and master of the craft to put you at ease and relax you so that you can be what you can be the best version of yourself in that scene.
I'd say, the first time I ever met him, he said, what's going on? I think I've told this on the podcast, but in case, I'll tell Brett. He said, let's go on a ride in my golf cart. So I've been with him for thirty seconds and he's taking me on a Indiana Jones is driving me around the back lot on his golf cart. And there's these little trams that go by for the tours on Warner Brothers. It's not as big as Universal, but they they have a lot of these little tour buses that are constantly going around and one is approaching us and I and I noticed that he just so suddenly just looks away for his privacy. And I say to him, do you ever turn and wave to the tours?
And he goes, no, I look away.
But I do feel bad about it.
You know how he would freaking they would jump off the tour.
Yes, I mean that's there's no Well, also, if he works on it doesn't have like the button the press to be.
Also, if you work on the Warner Brothers a lot, they go buy every ten seconds, So it wouldn't be a very fun environment for him to be working.
It would oh my gosh.
All right, so shrinking is a hit. And uh so then you decide, you know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna once again say that I should play a pivotal role in this show.
Too.
It was actually Jason that said this.
No, I'm just doing a bit. I'm just trying to make fun of you for writing yourself another sorry again, let me get a take to let me get it.
Take up, dude, I was I was a long foot a ride too. I'm uncomfortable. Now, hold on, I'm just doing it.
I'm doing a bit ready, I'll do it better. So then you decide to take three?
What am I to do?
No exactly, something like that. Like you're like embarrassed and defensive.
I feel that anyway.
Okay, So then, because it worked the first time, you decided that as a writer, you should write yourself one of the leads.
I guess, oh man, all right.
We don't want to spoil it for the audience for what you what you play, but you now are really you're acting on this season of shrinking and spectacular. I got to direct you, I think in your very easy Hercules.
Did you see his arm when he put his hands up? Did you see his fucking arm? That's that, Hercules. I told you, motherfuckers, we were going to get something for you.
He's always been. He's always been pretty ripped. I don't think it's Hercules, all right, go ahead, Zach.
Zach, So, I play a very serious part in this show. It is not a fun part. There are no jokes for me. And my very first day filming on this show was with Zach Breath directing, and he was brilliant and I really, really, really genuinely appreciate him and it because it's scary of first stayed filming scary you have an idea in your head how you're going to do it with it, but you don't know if that's going to be, you know, especially with Bill. Bill's taking a big gamble on me playing this part, and I wanted him he wasn't sure about it, and I wanted him to feel good day one and not getting a panic like, oh shit, I don't know if this is gonna work, you know what I mean. And Zach was so it was a very serious scene and Zach was so brilliant on sex. He really created the vibe of like a safe space, you know what I mean, Like everyone's kind of kept everything kind of contained. It's like, let's very quietly try this thing and then we're going to quietly be over here and between takes kept it all sort of low key, and it was really great. And I think Bill came to visit and you we'd done a thing and he looked and he was like, okay, great. And it was such a sort of relief because then it was like, okay, we're fine. There was no sort of panic of is this gonna? Is this right? Does this feel right?
Was some of that pressure? I wonder just as an actor, because you become, you know, in an un natural, unusual way globally famous as this very specific character, were you worried or concerned or anxious about like, hey, I also want to show everyone I'm not just roy Ken and this is my first big chance to do that. Was that on your mind?
It's sort of I mean, as in, you always want to not be boxed in and be able to do other things, but that is out of my That's the same as making said, the same as any of it. All you can do is try and enjoy the making of the thing because beyond that is out of your control, Like as in, I don't if people don't like it, or they don't go for it, or they whatever doesn't that I can do about that. All I can do is do the thing. So I don't know that. I think in my anxiety waste of time thoughts that would take up some space. But when you're actually working, Yeah.
I thought you were. I thought you were spectacular and and I really loved you. Thank you.
I I it's a pleasure to drama with you. I think you're very I mean, you're very good at coming to you, but it was really nice to drama scenes you.
Thank you.
He's a better director than he is an actor, and I think I think he's a pretty good actor. But he's a better director than.
I feel about that.
I don't know.
There's a compliment in there, but there's also a dish.
And I don't know how it all is. It's all love. I said, I think you're a very good pretty good actor.
He said pretty good, said very good. Let me rephrase that pretty good.
Well, because they could go back to the tape and be like, no, nigga, you said pretty good, So I said pretty good. I said pretty good.
But I also think that as a director, I you know, you're one of my favorite directors.
Thank you.
I love I love directing, and thank you for both of you. Now, Brett. Yeah, my next question for you. I know we we got to wrap up soon, but I wanted to ask you how season three, Yeah, Season three of Shrinking everybody fucking ship dude being written by Brett as we speak.
Did they give you? Didn't they give you? Did they give you four?
No?
They just picked up three, I believe, and they're going to pick up I hope they pick up four. So Brett, you have a lot going on. I just want to get through the Brett also tours as a standard comedian. You can see and how do people find out if you're coming to their city?

I read in my research that you have always had a crush on Jennifer Lopez, who hasn't and that you wrote a movie which I've read and it's brilliantly funny, and it's it's like a it's like a fairly Brothers movie in the best sense in my mind, very funny comedy with some very funny physical comedy. And I I I this isn't It's been out on the news, so I can say that you have secured j Lo to play opposite you in a rom com? Is that true? Breath?
That is true?
I'm just gonna put it out there. She's also single.
She's also single. Broad What are your thoughts on that set?
There's a behavior thing on set, but once you guys are not on set, do you think it should happen?
Do you have it in your mind when you heard that j Lot, don't don't be fooled by the rocks that she's got. Broait before you go, Now, before you go, it's pretty exciting. You are j Loo? You are? But what a great guess, what an amazing guest.
He does not want to talk about his love of j Loo though he doesn't want.
To talk about anything.
Really.

Easily, and she jumps from Marvel to Dune. What else do we want to say? What a great guest, What a nice man.
What a nice man? And we can say that genuinely because we know him.
Yeah, he is that sweet in real life everybody he's Uh, he's such a gentleman, and he's very kind, and he's very soft spoken, and he's.
Until he's not until you you know, you don't cross the motherfucker. But you know, I'm.

Oh man, what a guy got? Brett was a sweetie? Y'all are super funny? Uh, everyone get a full body scan. I guess that's the new wave.
Yeah, get a full body scatter. I really wanted to ask him if he would watch Donald's OnlyFans, we never around him. A good question, but I'm excited to have this fan uh come on the show and talk about what he or she By the way, he or she, I don't know why. I'm assuming it's a man I would.
Like specifically, but women also if you watch that in the beginning.
Yeah, by the way, I want to just reiterate, this isn't open to just the gaze. It could be a woman too. I think it's actually more interesting if it's a woman talking about what she'd like to see Donald do. But either way, I'm down. I think it could be a running It could be a running series. If it goes well, we can call it Dicks Your Life.
I will fucking get an only fans and make it happen. It means I get subscribers that'll pay that money.
I would like to uh make it an ongoing series where and we could be a reality. Someone says what they'd like Donald to do on his on his supposed OnlyFans.
Oh, I don't get a real only fans.
You can, Hey, I don't want to do that. You can do whatever you want.
I'm gonna be honest with you. I don't want to do that I was trying to be funny. I don't want to get an only fans, but I would love to hear what people would want me to do on.
I would like it just in case.
Well, make sure that you keep track of all the submissions.
I'll be right. Freaky ship, I don't want somebody to be like I just want to see his toes?
Yeah, please please?
Oh god? Okay, well it was a freaky Some people like that ship, but I don't want to just hear I want to see his toes. I think that's going to get you on the show.
Please not to do it. Please don't come on with something basic. We want, we want, we want to feel uncomfortable.
Okay, a challenge, friend, let's see if we can freaking test.
iHeart stand there.
And I had a friend telling me stuff I didn't know about being a homosexual recently.
Wait what happened?
Like a gay friend of mine was telling me that certain cities are known for being more bottom heavy than top heavy. Said, for example that I think he said that West Hollywood is very bottom. I think it's.
Bottom bottom heavy. That's the energy, bottom heavy, bottom down.
Yeah, well, I just didn't know that was a thing. He was really educating me on on things. He said, there's a lot of tops in New York because he said, bottoms in New York have to really compete because there's there's more. This is what he told me.
Ship squats.
The show educate.
If you want to hear someone who will tell you some crazy, intense, uncensored ship, yes, I'll have him on. He would have it. We have to definitely do a parental warning on the head of that one because was on the floor. Want to ask him to come on. He could be anonymous, although he probably would want to throw out his grinder handle. I need to have to come on the show now, No listen, I'm I I. I thought I knew everything there was to know, but he was telling me things that that were like really intense.
Guys that.
Stories about the show We made about a bunch.
Of talks and nurses, and.
I said, he's the stories nets. So gada rab here, YadA here.
