Augustine of Hippo read Greek badly, and the Western church ran with his interpretation and still reads Genesis 6 his way.

That is why most pastors skip the four verses where the sons of God take human wives, and it is where Leah Steele Barnett, Malaine Lea Butler and Jenny Embrey opened the first Supernatural Bible Session. Leah reads Genesis 6:1-4 from the NKJV and teaches it from the divine council view: two hundred Watchers descending in the days of Jared under a leader named Semjaza, the binding oath they swore to each other on Mount Hermon, and the exchange that followed, heavenly knowledge and technology traded to fathers for their daughters.

The case gets built inside the Protestant canon first, through Numbers 13:33, Deuteronomy 2 and 3, Jude 6 and 7, and 2 Peter 2:4-5, then carried into 1 Enoch and Jubilees for the context Genesis assumes the reader already has. Where demons come from according to Enoch 15, Mastema's bargain for a tenth of them in Jubilees, why Nephilim reads giants in the Septuagint, the Latin Vulgate and the Aramaic, why the Sethite view has no answer for the angels held in chains, and why the Ethiopian church walked out in 471 AD carrying its manuscripts to the monasteries. The session closes in prayer over every child connected to the room.

Genesis 6:1-4

"Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. And the LORD said, My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years. There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown." (NKJV)

Application: Four verses carry a story the rest of the Bible assumes its reader already knows. The sons of God, bene ha'elohim in the Hebrew, is the phrase used everywhere else in scripture for heavenly beings, and the giants appear in those days and also after that, which is the line that sends a reader forward to Numbers 13 and Deuteronomy 3 asking how any of them stood on the earth after the flood. Genesis records the event and moves on, leaving the descent, the oath and the origin of what came out of those unions to the texts the Second Temple readers held in their hands. That silence is why the session travels through Jude, 2 Peter, 1 Enoch and Jubilees before it closes.
