Richard Zapien Garden Co-Director at UC Riverside Agricultural Operations & Panda, a student intern came on the program to talk about the community garden’s they operate.
The “Garden” as it is know, consists of about 8 acres of land on UCR property. Each year residents in the community may apply to use one of the 8 by 10 plots to grow their own vegetables, produce, spices or flowers.
There is also a production side where student interns farm the land and provide the harvest to “Dining Services” at the university where the food is used to feed students. The student interns learn food sustainability and how to plant, farm and harvest their crops.
