Listen live on the FIVEAA Player.
The hottest show on Netflix right now. The residence. So the story is this pretty much. One night there's a state dinner which is hosting Australia and honoring Australia. The head usher of the White House is found dead. So then private investigator comes in and there are a number of people, possibly the suspects, one hundred and fifty seven of them in one hundred and thirty two rooms in the White House with one dead body. One of those suspects is a man who we know and love very well in this town, former South Australian residence, the King of Melbourne Street, North Adelaide. Brett Tucker, lovely to see you, Brett.
How are you. I'm great to see you mate.
It has been a while, as we were discussing affair, twenty.
One years, it's been Brett. It's a whole lifetime since we saw you here in Adelaide.
Yeah, I still feel like I've been hanging around those streets causing trouble. It's probably not laid back any Adelaide. Actually after I was there within four.
Years, well, it was great. It was great to have you here. Are so delighted with everything you're doing in your career, including this show, which is so popular everywhere I look Brett on social media in articles. Shonda Rimes has done it again with this particular show.
Yes well, and in particular Paul William Davies, who's the creator.
It's a Shondaland production.
Paul William Davies, who has written for Shonda before, is this absolutely brilliant guy who kind of gleaned the idea from a nonfiction book called The Residence, which is a book about the people that run the one that live in the White House for decades regardless of who's in offers, and they are the ones that run the residence.
So where they are where the.
President and first Lady live in the family live, they run that house and it's generations of people who live there and stay there, and so it's such interesting, it's such an interesting history. So he gleaned the nonfiction story from that, he created a nonfiction story from that, and he's.
Just a brilliant writer.
He wrote every single episode, which is you know, not always the way, obviously there's writer's room, but when you get someone who's brilliant as him with one single voice and every single episode is written with that amount of preparation, detailed research, and it's just incredible humor.
Like it's a cracking, cracking script.
So yeah, it's it's kind of an actor's dream when you go, oh, oh, eighty percent of the work's done for me.
We don't see a lot of murder mysteries and comedy murder mysteries on show, so that sets us a part too. But not just that. The location itself, where the White House is almost a character in itself. I've never been there clearly, but what you see on TV it looks like it's just perfect.
Well it is, and that's it is a character.
That's the thing, and that's why you know the residence it is that it is kind of the main character of the story and it's it's it's so good. And they created the white they recreated the White House of a seven sound studios in Los Angeles, in Riley Studios. Every single nickknack and light switch and picture you see is exactly. And we had delegates from the White House come out and give us a seminar and how it's run, how to behave protocol and they were blown away. But they've seen him a ton of sets and they said, this is without doubt the closest thing we've ever seen to it, Like we just feel like.
We're at work.
So they which was which is amazing for us because it's like McLeod's Daughters, Like the great thing about McCloud's was it you know you're on a working farm. You know you're sticking your arm actually into cows, bumps, real cows, so you don't have to suspend your disbelief too much. The walls aren't wobbling. And when someone creates the White House like that, it was just you. You're in the White House, so you don't have to that's done for you. The writing stuff, there's so much stuff supporting you as an actor and the story and like you said, the White House, big character.
In it, and they did such a great job.
Can you tell me the work that Shonda does on this show then? So she is such a Jessica as you know who when you and I last spoke was my girl for now, my wife of almost seventeen years, Brett.
She's stuck with you.
She's stuck with you, I know. But Gray's Anatomy is in like season twenty two or something. You know, she's still strong, She's all over that private practice Scandal bridgeted. I mean, she is a genius Shonda Rhymes.
He's amazing, and she's been very good to me.
She's in fact, I've got the record along with Jason George for the most amount of shows worked on.
A couple of those grades were only one or two epps.
But I've done four Shonda shows, So she's definitely looked after me.
But do you mean what she does specifically on this production.
Yeah, because I don't want to take away, as you said, the genius behind this show. But anytime her, anytime her name is attached to a project, you just know it's going to be good. And it's no surprise that it's the number one show on Netflix.
Yeah, and it certainly fits and they have a close relationship. He had written for her on Scandal, which another political drama. But so you know, she she basically develops producers. Obviously when she created Graze, in which it was she was way more hands on when it comes to writing.
But with something like that, she'll read.
She obviously reads every script, you know, she dissects it, she'll edit it, but ultimately.
She really there's you know, it's her production company.
They put all the cash in and along with Netflix. You know, it's under her umbrella. But most of this was him with her producing and look other than that, you'd have to ask Shonda what she did, you know, because that's about as much as I know. And I think I'm in the ballpark. But the truth is, I mean, she's she was there, she came to set, she was there at the read throughs absolutely lovely and but but you know there there's she's got so much stuff going on. They're always inviting new people in to pitch them ideas. You know they're going to fit under the umbrella and within the genre of what Shonda produces, so you know, so it all fits in. But as far is this one, you know, creatively, Paul had absolutely the majority of the work.
So The Residence is an eight parter, which is so great because people can just binge one after the other after the other. You play the dashing, charming Australian foreign minister. You were handsome when I saw you're twenty one years ago. You've got even more handsome now, Breh. What I mean, this is a lot of work. This is a role set for you.
It was a role I thought it was a role set for me when I saw it, and look, it was one of those ones again when you're reading you go oh.
The first reaction is.
You go, I can't want I can't allow myself to want this too badly because I'm probably not going to get it because it's so good. When you're reading, you go, oh, this is just good. You don't get scripts like this very often, you know, you just don't.
And so that's the reaction. I don't want to get.
I don't want to put my heart too much in this because I don't need to be broken because every man and his dog is going in for it, you know. But I did have that upper upper, you know, I had that thing of having worked for Shanda before I knew I was right for it as well, and there's plenty of other people that would have been but I just like, this feels very specific to me, and they're very specific kind of humor, and so it was, Yeah, I did feel.
Like I was. I was.
I was on the money for it, and luckily I got over the line snuck.
In there a t Who else is a star in this is user from Orange is the New Black, which I mean her character and that was extraordinary. But what a talent she.
Is is amazing, and you know what brigaging lovely as well, Like we got really I this is one of it was a bit Mike mcgahme McLeod's, you know, like this is a huge ensemble and it was very everyone their a game. Like everyone was absolutely pumped. They knew what they were dealing with there, like this is special. We're gonna you know, it's eight parts. It's quality, not quantity. It's a it's a long basically a very long movie, and we're bringing our a game because you've got to do the writing credit. When it's that good, you're like, you're not you can't be letting it down. And so everyone really banded together and it was it was it everyone just supporting each other, loves it. We're on a big group chat still we're talking about this. Everyone's chatting and and she was the captain of that ship without being without being a captain, if you know what I mean. She was just one of the crew and one of the casts and absolutely lovely.
Everyone was really good crew.
Well it's an all star cast too, so you've got Uzza, you've got Julian McMahon's in there. You've got Geane, Carlo Esposito who we mentioned before, Al Franken No former senator, and snl Alum. And then I was thinking, it's a it's a long way from the homestead of Kingsford where you get to dance with Kylie Minogue.
Yeah, well that's not actually in the show.
I see, I'm not through the eight episode yet. That's just that's off camera.
That was mucking around off camera. Yeah, that was just mucking around off camera.
Amazing American actors on there too. But there's there's a real sense in Australia. Obviously, it's in Australian.
Yeah, it's at the Australian State Dinner and that and and and tensions are quite high, the relationship between the years.
Basically, the premise that started is the US are trying to mend the.
Australia, the relationship between Australia, which has been severely damaged from the previous government. So that's the premise of it. And and shit goes downhill pretty quickly. It's Mayhem and Hughes. So yeah, it's a great it's a great premise, and it's some really great Australian gags in there. And Kylie Eily knocks it out of the park, and like you said, John Carlo is amazing.
He actually replaced an actor. I don't know if do you know that story? No?
I don't.
Yeah, so we actually the Chief Usher was played by Andre Brower, who was beautiful part after from Brooklyn nine nine, and he actually passed halfway through during the strike that we were four episodes in. We were exactly halfway through, and I was a lot of my stuffs with him. The Chief Usher. We have a little kind of gag in there that I won't kind of reveal a storyline thing.
And here so people can be surprised by.
But yeah, and then we had a you know, the stripe was supposed to go over two or three months. It went for twelve, and by the time we came back, he'd sadly passed, devastatingly passed, and son Carlo stepped in and we reshot everything.
Wow, unbelievable.
Yeah, it was really really sad, really sad. But also he'd be I know, you know, he'd be so and they were friends, Carlo and and so it was kind of amazing to get it, to get it finished just despite that and kind of have him in mind when we got over the line with.
It, and then to get someone of that ilk to step in, you know we know him from his work is extraordinary.
Yeah, he's amazing.
Bret Attacker is my guest. The Residence is the show, the hottest show on Netflix right now, so you get to see a little bit of Australia in this international show. It's funny mentioned the strike because in the twenty years I haven't seen you. I've been watching everything that you're up there. You're a great follow on social media because we see all the stuff with the strike, all the difficulty through COVID and how that affected everyone. You're now this sort of underwater adventurer. You're surfing, you're riding horses on the beach. You like kind of the Leyland Brothers meets Bloody Albi Mangos. It's so great what you're doing.
Oh yeah, we need to write a script around this stuff, don't we. Yeah that's just me showing off.
I know. I love it. I do love it.
I think if I wasn't if I wasn't acting, i'd be doing something in or under the under the water for sure. But yeah, I'm missing it. I do love that stuff, the underwater photography stuff and swimming, swimming with animal sharks, sharks.
Yeah, it's great. It's my favorite thing.
You're back home for a while because you're filming with Liam Neeson.
I've done that. I was, it was a little I came back for family. I'm actually in Melbourne.
I sold my house right before the fires in the States, and I'm back in Melbourne for a bit. I came back for family stuff. My mum's quiet, I allt and so I've been here for that. And then and then it just pop things land for a bit. You kick the ship out of me on camera off camera he was lovely. Yeah, beat me up.
It was really rude. And then and then and then hanging out here for a bit and see what happens next.
Well, I'm sure that they're particularly after this. I'm sure people will be knocking on you. You've got to come and visit us here in Adelaide. Come back to South.
Do they shoot? What's happening with? Shoot they shooting stuff? What's happening? What's happening? I know some friends are kay kaylan is just over there. I saw Mcalor yesterday. Yep, it's where they shooting TV with shooting TV was not a lost.
You might just have to come for the social. Well, we'll get the Torrago back out of the ship there, Ingola, and we'll get you the other or I'll come to you because you're a mad person.
I'm not going to do I'm not no, no, I know what I'm going to watch. Can't blay.
I'm not buying a plane ticket to watch Calm Plain adelaidecause that would be I'm going to have to you know what I'm saying.
They have to pay me to get on the plane.
Round we're playing the West Coast Eagles. If we can't beat the West Coast Eagles here in Adelaide, then pack it up.
We're done. We'll beat them at curling. I don't know about football.
Is there any danger we could win a game? That would be nice. But well, it's always great to see you, first and foremost on our screen. We won everyone to get on Netflix's It's easy to find because when you go to New and Popular, you just go to the number one show, which is the Residence, and you're in it eight part series which people can now binge on Netflix. Always lovely to see you. Congratulations on your success. May our football team have as much success as you are having.
Brett, oh Ja Janien, you know what, You're right. I should have been positive. It's bad karma, isn't it.
Go Blues, We'll see you soon.
You're the best. Thanks so much, mate, cheers. Good on you, Brett Tucker. He was Dave de Vett in mclod's Daughters all those years ago, and now, of course he's just slaying it in the new show The Residence, which is now available to check out on Netflix. Murder Mystery, folks, very funny. You will love it to a great Who's done it, Brett Tucker?
I guesst
