Beginning her photographic endeavors in 2012 by documenting stories from her neighborhood in Thokoza, East of Johannesburg, she has ascended to international acclaim. At 29, she has garnered significant recognition by recently receiving the 2024 Discovery Award Louis Roederer Foundation’s Public Award and the prestigious Madame Figaro Photo Award for her exhibition "Ho tshepa ntshepedi ya bontshepe" (To Believe in Something That Will Never Happen) at the Rencontres d’Arles summer photography festival in France. Imagine losing a loved one, laying them to rest, and then, years later, seeing them again—this time as a 3D image that almost feels real. Technology has pushed the boundaries of what's possible, even bringing back the dead in a way that's weird and wonderful. While this is fascinating, there are some ethical questions that need to be considered.  Did the deceased provide consent for their likeness to be preserved in this manner? Would they have wanted their voice and image to be digitally resurrected? Does this technology help those who are grieving, or does it risk taking advantage of their pain?  To delve into what holograms are and how AI can recreate the voices and appearances of the deceased, I'm joined by my guest, Brett Venter, Editor at Stuff Magazine.
