On tonight’s South Africans Doing Great Things, we’re joined by the inspiring Dr. Brian Monaisa, Head of Plastic Surgery at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and founder of Smile Artists Africa. Dr. Brian’s mission goes beyond medicine, he is restoring hope through reconstructive surgeries and raising funds for breast cancer survivors who can’t afford surgery. With Smile Artists Africa, he combines art and charity, bringing together some of South Africa’s finest artists to support this cause. Considered the world’s most important event for conserving biodiversity, the United Nations Biodiversity Conference COP16 is taking place in Cali, Colombia. This gathering brings together heads of state and ministers from around the globe to advance efforts in improving biodiversity protection. Following the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, this year’s focus is on reversing biodiversity loss by 2030. Tonight on Africa at a Glance, we’re joined by Flora Mokgohloa, DDG of Biodiversity & Conservation at the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment who  will help us understand South Africa’s role in this critical global effort and what it means for our own biodiversity conservation efforts.

Africa at a glance: South Africa’s role at the United Nations Biodiversity Conference COP16

One of South Africa’s most prolific criminal cases, “The Station Strangler”, will be streamed on Showmax. The documentary delves into the world of serial killer Norman Afzal Simons, who is believed to have killed 21 young boys and one adult from the mid-80s to the mid-90s in the Cape Flats.The schoolteacher was convicted of the rape and murder of 10-year-old Elroy van Rooyen and sentenced to 25 years in in 1995.

Twenty-eight years after his imprisonment, Simons was released on parole and placed under 24-hour monitoring in November 2023, opening up fresh wounds in a community where justice has been denied for decades.

Meanwhile, the true-crime feature documentary, which will premiere on November 6, is produced by IdeaCandy which brought viewers “Tracking Thabo Bester”, “Devilsdorp” “Steinheist” and “School Ties”. Joining us this evening to talk about this documentary is award-winning director, Nadine Cloete. Nadine has won the Audience Award at Encounters for Action Kommandant, while Address Unknown won the SAFTA for Best Short Film. She is also the Production and Development Manager for Non-Fiction at the National Film and Video Foundation.
