October is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to focus on the critical link between mental health and financial well-being. In South Africa, studies show that more and more people are reporting moderate to high levels of financial stress. To cope, many are turning to solutions such as entering debt review, taking on more borrowing, or accessing the savings portion of their retirement funds. While these strategies may offer temporary relief, they often come with long-term consequences for both financial health and mental well-being.

In this series, we will explore how to recognize financial stress, its impact on mental health, and practical strategies to manage and reduce it. Whether through self-management or seeking outside help, there are ways to regain control of your financial and emotional health. As usual we’re joined by Dr Frank Magwegwe, Head of Financial Wellness and Advisory at Nedbank and GIBS faculty member.
